Speakers for Heavy METAL listening

Why dont you go for full-rangers , diy route?

You can seek help from Sreekanth , tantony , anil and other expert DIYer's.

Hiya there, Kittu, long time. . . , How have you been, mate?

IMHO, there is no sound like that coming from a full range driver but for playing head-banger's stuff, it may not be totally satsfying w/o a subwoofer (maybe one per channel) thrown in. Unless, of course one chooses to go in for a humongous BIB/horn-loaded cabinet, which are not very easy to build, esp here in India.

Have a look at Lyrita's Amity speaker here to see what I am trying to convey.

Thats just one implementation of a FRD with a separate bass driver. There are numerous others, too. See this too

If you want go a bit "refined and loud" (but a bit expensive), you could look at Paradigm and dynaudio speakers. Go for the multi driver ones from the entry series. They can rock !

Not sure if you are inclined towards DIY, but here's my thought on this. I would probably look at a design with a horn-loaded compression driver for the highs with a 12"/15" pro mid-woofer in a horn-loaded cab for the lows if possible. If I do not have to worry about WAF and have a sufficiently large room, I'd even be tempted to go for a corner loaded horn design like the Jensen compact corner horn. Another alternative could be one of the Econowave models in a 2.5 design. If you're interested in either of these, Audiokarma would be the place to search...

I second that, thats a great design for metal and hard rock, to make it even better, use an active XO and bi-amp the speakers with two amps. If you have the dough, go for beyma drivers.

@ OP
My two cents in the previous post pertain only if someone is hell-bent on going the FRD way for listening to metal. This design suggested by GH is it, I guess. But do chew over the "ifs" that good old grubyhalo has mentioned. If you want great bass go for a 15" driver and definitely nothing less than 12 ". 15'' will make the cab design simpler cause u can use a sealed cab with great effect.

woah! thanks a ton for the replies guys.. I have not yet thought on the DIY route.. I would need to listen to something to come to a conclusion.. let me figure out a few places/brands to audition too as I will be travelling most of next month..
One more constraint is my amp, mine being a less wattage one, can it drive the speakers that you guys have suggested?? my closing in on the Klipsch basically has that reason too..With a sensitivity of 95+ I'm sure the 510 AE can drive em with ease.
Can this amp drive the suggestions given in? I mean the paradigms, the dynaudios, the monitor audios etc or even the DIY speakers..

45W RMS should be quite sufficient IF the speaker you chose is indeed 95dB. However, I wasn't aware that Dynaudios and Paradigms could be that sensitive. If you do go for a horn-loaded system, you should be able to hit 95dB quite easily. You'd be better off deciding on the amp after you get your speakers. Your best bet to audition a horn-loaded speaker system in India might be a DIY one...

Paradigm Monitors are something like 89 or 91 dB and surely not as sensitive as Klipsch. Same goes for MA Bronze/Silver series.

Just to give you an idea of the cost and complexity involved in one of the variants of the Econowave I had mentioned earlier, please take a look at the following posts:

The Econowave SR would cost you about $180 per channel without the cabs. This should work upto approximately $600-700 for 2 channels including shipping and customs. The cab is pretty simple, you should be able to build a pair of decent cabinets and finish them for about $300-400. You can always add a nice sub for around $400-600 later on. The end result, I believe, would be an outstanding pair of speakers, not just for rock & metal. I also think it would be a much better speaker than what you would get in India for that money. Ofcourse, just my 0.02...

P.S: An MFW 15" should pair very well with the Econo's and is a very popular build.

Check with Denom on Klipsch RF series latest pricing. :)

I had auditioned RF-52s for my stereo requirements and I can claim one thing - they are plenty good on bass. I am sure RF-62s better them in this department. They are positively bright ... extremely bright for my requirements but should be terrific for heavy metal. But you have heard them over an extended duration, right?

I auditioned RF-52, 62 and 82 a few weeks ago. I took a few death metal, psychedelic, jazz fusion, progressive rock CDs with me..To my ears, RF 52 seemed to be the most suitable speaker (among the 3) for all these kinds of music. Talking about metal in particular, i thought RF-52 beat 'em all. I don't know what made it stand out but i just loved the feel of the 52. 62 and 82 were way too bright! 52 was loud but it was not like a runaway train (which i would associate with the other 2). 52 was very punchy and tight!
