Speakers for Marantz SR5200 6.1 Receiver

I recently purchased an used (5 yrs old) Marantz 6.1 Receiver from one of our forum Member Prithvi. It is in very good working condition with an Universal remote (Really cool). I am using this with Onkyo HTIB BS speakers which i got it from my brother who upgraded to Mission M35i + NAD C 326 BEE. I will also be getting the Onkyo Sub woofer in a months time once he upgrades the subwoofer. I will be primarily using it in a Stereo mode (2.1). For now it is 2.0 setup with Philips DVD player though planning to get an used CD player after i upgrade the speakers in a months time.

So coming to Marantz SR 5200 receiver, the source direct mode is the most beautiful feature of it for listening to CD's. I have listened to Onkyo receivers Stereo mode & many other receivers stereo mode, but this receiver is a STAND OUT from the rest :clapping:. It has amazing clarity in low volumes & when you move up the volume, it gets a little loud and very clear. I am loving it :ohyeah:. But the Onkyo HTIB BS speakers doesn't help in appreciating the Marantz receiver . So now looking to change the speakers.

I am on a tight budget and can afford only 10 - 12K for BS Speakers since i am planning to get an used CD player in the next two months. I am considering the Norge speakers which falls within this price range. But most of the Norge speakers have 4 Ohms impedeance. This Marantz receiver is cpable of handling 6 Ohms - 16 Ohms speakers. If i use the Norge speakers, i believe it will damange the receiver.

Could you ppl receommend a 6/8 Ohm Norge speaker Or should i look for a new / used BS speaker that suits Marantz very well.

Now i have a serious doubt. When i read the online review of AV Max publication, they had mentioned all the Norge speakers are 4 Ohms. But when i checked with one of the dealer, he affirms that all Norge speakers are 8 Ohms compatible.

Does it mean that all Norge Speakers are 4 Ohms - 8 Ohms compatible. Could the owners clarify the doubt ?

Am i safe if i purchase this Norge Millenium speakers to drive my Marantz receiver which is 6 Ohms - 16 Ohms Compatible ? Plz help..

With an AVR, its better to stick to 8 ohm, sensitive speakers which are not too much of a difficult load. Why dont you look at used speakers?
I suggest you postpone cd player purchase and spend more on speakers. You can use dvd players digital output to connect to AVR so that the Marantz AVR does the digital to analog conversion.
And, congrats on a fine AVR, Elango!

Thanx iaudio. Since my budget was 12 K, Norge (new speaker) was within the budget. Thought i could get a good one form Norge.. So far i haven't got any views on Norge speakers, if i am not convinced with a satisfactory response here for Norge speakers, i will look for used speakers.

I have connected the DVD player to the receiver using the Digital Co-Axial connection.

Are you not considering sonodyne ;) bro

Don't even consider Norge with a budget of 12k.

Consider Wharf 9.2 (or at least 9.1)

If possible, Monitor Audio BR1/2

Sonodyne

Polk Monitor 50 through shopyourworld.com

Hi Kittu,

Sonodyne was on my Wishlist. But sadly they don't have a BS speaker in there Sonus range. Not sure if there other series Genie / Avant 150 is good. I haven't auditioned them as the dealer in chennai doesn't stock them.

If you have auditioned (or) come across any of the series Genie / Avant 150, could you share your experience.

Also avant 150 seems to be good on sensitivity but lacks in frequency spectrum (90 Hz - 20Khz).

Thanx techboy. I think Monitor Audio BR1 & BR2 would be a very good choice but they would cost upwards of 15K. So i am ruling that out. I can take a chance on the used one if anybody is willing to sell them.

I will check on the remaining.

Have you checked PSB ALPHA B1s ?

Thanx Kittu. Yeah i enq abt the price from Chennai Dealer (Raghu - Decibel), he quoted 14K. I think PSB Alpha B1 should also be a very good match. I am yet to audition that.

I am collecting inputs to shortlist my speakers :)

Same price was quoted for me too.... Please do audition and post your impressions. :)

One of the forum members is ready to sell his Dali Concept 1 speakers. I haven't heard much abt it. Does it go well with Marantz. Your suggestions please.

Hi Elangoas, I just happened to get hold of a Marantz SR5200 and am thinking about what speakers I should buy. So was wondering what you finally got and how do you find it.

Hi ramanujb,

A superb receiver for stereo/HT use....Initially i had Wharfedale diamond 9.2, but now upgraded to Sonodyne Sonus range....

Marantz receiver is on the warmer side, so a lil bright speaker is better IMO...

Thank you Elangoas, I also looked at the Sonodyne Sonus 2504, guess it will match well. Can't wait to audition it. By the way, the person who gave me the amp mentioned that it creates a powerful magnetic field and it might be a good idea to keep other stuff like tv and dvd player away. I was wondering if you have experienced anything?

Thanks,
Ramanuj.

Nope... I am not aware/I haven't heard anything like that...
