After a long time of research and waiting, I've finally bought a Onkyo TX-SR608 from the US. I've to now buy the step down transformer, speakers, cable etc before I can set it up. My hands are itching to set it up. I'm from Chennai.

Can experts / owners of Onkyo around here help me with buying advice on the following - please?

[1] Step down transformer. The rated power of 608 works to about 680W, I think. Should I be buying a 1KVA or 1.5KVA for this? Is Maxine a good brand to go with? Where can I buy Maxine transformer in Chennai and what's the approx cost (of 1kva or 1.5kva)?

[2] What's the recommended speakers for 608? My budget is about Rs.1L (can stretch it to about Rs. 1.3L. My room dissensions are 12' x 12'. I prefer to have speakers that are not bright (like Klipsch).

[3] Are Bose speakers a good option to consider at all?

[4] What speaker cables would you recommend. I'm confused by the range of speaker cables that's available.

[5] Can you also recommend the list of speaker showrooms in Chennai that I can visit for auditioning and selection?

Thank you so much for your help.

best regards
- Anand

Edit: I'm not sure if I posted this in the right forum. Mods, please move it to the Speaker section, if this post is not relevant in this forum. Sorry for the bother.

Sigh! I think people will never learn to search the forum.

Usually the transformer power has to be 1.5 times minimum of the max consumption level. Go to a 1.5kVa transformer. Maxine is really good and they do provide good support including warranty. Maxine i available from their showroom in Ritchie Street. Look at SHAH ELECTRONICS for more details.

You have to audition speakers before you buy. Look at QA, Martin Logan, Deftech, Wharfedale, Mission, Polk Audio, Mordaunt Short, KEF......... DO NOT buy speakers on others recommendation. You have to listen to the speakers yourself.

As I said before listen to a few brands. Also listen to Bose. If you like it, there is no harm is picking it up.

One of the best VFM speaker cable is Belden 14AWG. You should get this for about 150 a meter.

Cheers

Thanks - I called Shah Electronics and found out where they were. Will go tomorrow and buy it.

Thanks - what's your opinion on ELAC, Paradigm & Monitor Audio brands?

Can you please help me on where I can audition the speakers in Chennai? I've mentioned the showrooms (that I have heard about) for some of the speaker brands you have suggested above - can you suggest better alternates (if any). For the others, can you please help?

QA - ?
Martin Logan - Decibel, Teynampet, Chennai
Deftech (is it same as Definitive Technologies?) - Decibel, Teynampet, Chennai
Wharfedale - Grand Cinema, Kodambakkam, Chenani
Mission - Decibel, Teynampet, Chennai
Polk Audio - ProFx, Spencers, Chennai
Mordaunt Short - Grand Cinema, Kodambakkam, Chennai
KEF - ProFx, Spencers, Chennai

OK - will audition Bose as well.

Pardon my ignorance - is AWG the same as the cable gauge? Where's the best place I can get Belden cable in Chennai?

thanks

Hi Anand,

You can contact Cressida AV Zone, R.A.Puram.

They have Cambridge Audio, Mordaunt short, Yamaha, Marantz, Denon, Dali, Boston Acoustics, .... with competitive price.

For stepdown transformer, check your AV Receiver rear side. Watts should be mentioned near by the AC power supply input. Multiple into 1.5. then purchase the transformer according to the value.

Recently we purchased Maxine for my friends Yamaha 367.

For the others, can you please help?

Better alternatives? As far as I am aware, these guys are good. :). Most of the products have a single rep demonstrating and selling.

AWG is American Wire Gauge, and yes it is the same as cable gauge. Belden cables are available in many places. You can try Ritchie street as well as Decibel.

Cheers

thanks
