Sq Box Classic story

Interesting observations. I used a DAC with my SB Classic, though not with my Duet-I had only one DAC, though multiples of all the other gear! Currently it is connected to the Duet and then to my amp. The sound quality is excellent to start with, and I assume with the DAC it only gets better.

Thanks TB. I would like to refine my question further:

Which streaming device - an SB Touch/iPod Classic/Sonos/any other, in the sub 20K range has the best Dac?

I have only one thing to add here and that is Sonos is out of 20K budget. I don't have any idea about any other streamer. I assume Sonos and SB are one of the best in the business.

I will be VERY surprised if the iPod matched the other two. I was never impressed with ipod DACs.

Cannot compare SB and Sonos performance as I haven't listened to both. I only have the Sonos - ZP90 and ZP120. The driving difference would be that some models of SB support hi-res files, which Sonos does not yet - this is the ONLY chink in Sonos' armor. In most other respects, Sonos has better reviews / performance. Where Sonos really excels is multi-zone audio where it provides excellent wireless performance due to its independence of your router wifi and instead relying on its proprietary SonosNet. Audio from multiple zones is perfectly synched, while I have read of people having issues with SB for similar application. SB also needs a computer to be on and running the SB software. The Sonos I run off a networked HD, and so do not need the computer to be on (a big plus for my situation). Some HD have a 'lite' SB software, but I have read they are not as flexible. Both Sonos and SB have iphone / ipod touch / android apps. Sonos controller is wayy overpriced I think. The iphone app I use has ALL the features of the Sonos controller.

In summary, I think Sonos is the best thing since sliced bread :D Like Apple stuff, it just works...beautifully! But it's expensive! If you want multi-zone streaming (or chances of expanding to it), I highly recommend it. If it's for a single zone, SB may well provide what you need.

My new SB Touch came in early this morning and is up and running. It's a neat device, easier to set up than the Duet. Sound quality is good. Recommended..

Thanks Logitech

congrats George.
is anyone using sb touch with a local attached usb hdd (externally powered or internally powered) with song collection size more than 10-20 GB?
Will it be better with local hdd vs streamed via network, specially if someone doesn't have a spare comp to run 24x7?

I dont think the people here will do what Logitech did in the US-part of it is the sheer volume of business there, which is of an order of magnitude higher compared to India, part of it is the general trust level at which they operate. Again, this is my personal observation, having been to the US many times.

The Touch,Duet and Classic are a bit different from the Boom, I think.

George, I have a different opinion on this. I think that the US is better in this regard because of better consumer protection laws (that are actually enforced), ability of the common man to sue a company for large sums of money, and consumer activists like Ralph Nader who made the public aware of what their rights should be as a consumer. In contrast, our antiquated consumer protection laws and absurdly low fines are a joke.

I also hypothesize that things will change dramatically when the next generation will start using the internet in a more meaningful way to share feedback.

Arun

You're probably right-they also do things like recalling cars on a regular scale when there are serious issues-maybe because of liability issues( Nader's fallout).

Congrats George on getting the 'Touch'.

How different is the sound quality as compared to the 'Classic'?

I've been a bit busy with some planning for HT room so havent really listened too much to the Touch. Initial impressions are that t sound comparable. Besides, Ive linked it up to a pair of different speakers and a new Hypex amp, so with many variables I really cant say too much.

Hi George,

Very much interested to know about the sound quality of touch from you. And how easy is it to use an external HDD through USB port. There seem to be few issues with the USB port of touch.

sups
