Is there any portal where I can check if a particular SSD is compatible with older motherboards? In particular, I would like to know if a 60GB or 120GB Kingston SSD (V300) would be compatible with an Intel 915GAV mobo. Objective is to try and salvage and speeden-up an old PC running a P4 processor on this board (915GAV). Usage is for browsing and typing some docs in MS Word - no HTPC use.

Mods - pls move this post if it is not appropriate here

Can't find the specs of your motherboard

If it has data port a sad will run

Else it can't

Other option is to use PCI card which has data ports but that will add to costs

Other option is to use PCI express sad (sad module on PCI express card). This is insanely fast then normal ssds but equally more expensive

Hope this helps

This page says the Mobo has 4 SATA ports. That means you can definitely plug an SSD in: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d915gav/sb/cs-012066.htm

This page says that there are no Windows 7 drivers available for this motherboard.: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...ability-for-Discontinued-Intel-Desktop-Boards

This means that you will have to install Win XP. I've heard that running Win XP on SSDs is not a fully trouble-free thing, as there are generally driver-compatibility issues.

Win XP does not have TRIM (which is essential for SSDs to run efficiently). That is another issue. But I think that some Samsung and INtel SSDs come with s/w tools that will let you run TRIM manually from time to time.

I have seen quite a few Win XP builds using SSDs on the 'net, but I'm not sure about how much effort has gone into installing and running Win XP on those.
