Stereo Speakers for Rs 50000-60000

some very interesting and valid points from you wild rain.... i'm gonna be reading more on this though the positioning of the speakers are gonna be compromised in my setup.

i'm gonna have to find out which of these speakers behave best with less than ideal space behind them...

Hows this to help a bit...?

Auralex Acoustics - SpeakerDudes(HD)

Hi rana,
When you don't have the option of a home trail I would suggest better stick to a front ported speaker :D

here are my thoughts on the Dynaudio demo.....

22. Dynaudio X12 + Rega Brio 3 + Rega Dac.

The X12 are compact size speakers. As always i had carried my music and i sat down to listen to the sepakers....

- The X 12 has a very smooth kind of sound. Very easy on the ears and extremely fluid in nature like a river flowing gently.
- The speakers seems to just disappear into the backgorund
- Low end was not very deep but was tight. Mids and highs were effortless and smooth.
- The overall sound was laid back but with a little excitement. I found them to be very involving.
- But for all it's goodness the X12 have one weakness. They sound small. Not that's not really their fault because the driver size is small. As i said before these are really compact speakers and will suit in a excellent way to smaller rooms.
- Come to think of it maybe good for me coz i'll be placing my eventual speakers on my desktop close to the wall.

i'm gonna try to demo the bigger X 16. I'm sure it'll have all the qualities of the X12 plus a bigger soundstage.

23. Dynaudio DM 2/7 + Rega Brio 3 + Rega Dac.

There's a important thing i learned. If you are going to demo different levels of speakers from a single brand then you should start with the lowest ones first.

Otherwise it kind of gets difficult to appreciate the lower range ones.

The X 12 are so good that after i was kind of spoilt by the time the demo guy replaced the X 12 and put in the DM 2/7.

- The DM 2/7 had a slightly forward and thinner sound than the X 12.
- Bass was deeper which was expected as the DM 2/7 a one of the larger bookshelves around.
- It had a big soundstage.
- But overall i was not impressed.

24. Dynaudio Focus 140 + Rega Brio 3 + Rega Dac.

Now this speaker was sort of more in the price range that i'm looking at and it was evident that the Focus have a better fit and finish. They look beautiful. Then i heard them...

- They had a beautiful lush & full sound. A very rich and detailed sound which was also very easy on the ears.
- The bass was totally tight and very deep.
- The sound was slightly forward compared to the X 12 but i never felt that they was harder on the ears. I guess they were just more revealing in nature.

I really liked the Focus 140 a lot and the demo guy realizing this just left the room and didn't come back for 30 mins. Or probably he left on a lunch break without telling me.... :)

When he came we talked about amplifiers and how he felt that the Rega Brio 3 was a pretty low end amp and that a higher level amp will make the Focus 140 sound ever better.

I told him i prefer a slightly laid back, warm, easy on the ears kind of sound. So then he told me to try a tube amplifier and set up this combo for me....

25. Dynaudio Focus 140 + Prima Luna Prologue Classic

He told me it'll take a while for the tube amp to warm up and i should give it about 15-30 mins for it to come to full effect. This was the first time for me as far tube amps go so i just went along with what he told me. After 30 mins i started my critical listening but i could realize a few things right from the get go from the very first time i heard the tube amp that....

He left the room again for about 30 mins....

- The sound now was much softer and smoother than before.
- the sound was now more tighter, held together better.
- the Focus 140 was now performing on a much higher level then before and i was just totally loving the music coming out of them.
- The tube amp kind of put me in a dreamy state where in i was kind of getting sleepy during the demo and feeling intoxicated during the demo.

When the demo guy walked back in he just gave me a smile coz he could make out from the expression on my face that i had totally enjoyed the last 30 mins with the Focus 140 & the Prima Luna Prologue Classic. When he asked me how i felt about the pair i just said one word.... Awesome.

He said when customers say very little after a demo it generally means they totally loved the product which was absolutely true.

I have to investigate more into tube amps now as i loved my first experience with them and i liked it's sound.

I've heard a lot of speakers in the last 6 months and as good as the Dynaudio Focus 140 is.... for me my favorite at this point in time is still the PSB Synchrony 2B. But the Focus 140 is a very close second and i'll do a 2nd & final demo of my top 3 choices before i make a purchase...!!

Top choices at this point in time....

1. PSB Synchrony Two B
2. Dynaudio Focus 140
3. Mezzo 1 or Mezzo 2

cheers & more to follow... :)

Don't get me wrong. I have to say you have good writing skills :clapping:

Apart from that I don't get the point behind auditioning the power hungry Dynaudio's with an entry level amps putting out less than 50W/ch and tube amps putting out 35W/ch.

The DM 2/7 and X12 work well with mid - level amps putting about 100W/ch or more.
The Focus 140 needs really good hi-end amps putting more than 150W/ch to do justice to it. You should be looking for amps ranging 150k INR and above to do justice to these speakers.
If you want to go for tube amp better look for higher sensitivity speakers and forget about using the computer as a source.

i won't ever get you wrong brother.... :) never ever worry about that and always feel free speak your mind. And the only reason to post here is to share and learn from others who know more. I'm a sponge ready to absorb all that comes my way :)

That being said yep i agree with you that the Dynaudios are power/current hungry speakers and deserve more respect courtesy a better amp. I'm gonna re-listen to the dynas again in the end if they remain in the top 3 after i complete all the speakers on my audition list and i'll make sure i try them with a better powered amp.

cheers :)

To be frank I was wondering where you got such hospitality at a hi-fi shop and sales men who just left you alone for such a long time and gave you enough time to enjoy the audition :D In that case you should enjoy more :D

If you are in USA you should make use of this opportunity and get something which is available cheaper there than in India.

Bro if u like laid-back, give Luxman a try. the L505u and the L550-II (Class A). I believe they're around 3k USD.

Impressive write-up BTW :)

Heard Dynaudio is revamping Focus range later this year. That could be one reason for the price for the 140. Believe USD 2k is very good price.

>demo was done at this store in nyc...

from what i hear 'inliving stereo' is on broadway (and 6th?) where the old tower records store used to be - also some nyu art departments. there used to be an older hifi shop just down the road where i have bought a few speakers from (and also heard my first sonus faber) - but heard they have gone out of business.

i dont think rega brio is capable of driving even the dynaudio dm series - leave alone the excites or focus. you should try the rega mira at the least or more powerful integrateds.

btw couple of weeks back i spoke to some guy in 'inliving' and he was trying to sell me a pair of dynaudio 2/7s which somebody had originally ordered for wall mounting - means they had drilled holes in the back of the speakers. hope you are not buying those. that's structural damage and best avoided.

btw the online vendor 'dedicated audio' has some great deals for some models of dynaudio speakers (last i checked they were selling dm 2/8s for $850). you should check them out.

Vector @ Punjagutta deals with PSB...

I spoke to Vectors and they said they do not carry PSB. Any other place in Hyderabad from where we can audition/get PSB?. I want to audition PSB Image B6, Paradigm Titan monitor and Monitor Audio and decide one among them. Thank you.

@Siva,

Good selection for comparing , I hope you can find all 3 and post your impressions. Atleast I could not find Titans in bangalore.

Yes siva, even i waited coudn't get through to it, Sound and vision is suppose to deal with PSB but have no in-stock for Audition, but they can get it delivered.

@rana_kirti : what did you buy at the end. Seemed like the most researched buy ever, and was a very informative thread.

thanks. i got tied up with other stuff and yet to decide. though recently i ve decided to complete this in another 3 months once i complete the demo all the speakers on my list.

infact i'm going to be demoing the Paradigm Studio 20, Nola Boxer and Totem Rainmaker within the next week or so.

to be updated.... ;-)

So i'm back on this venture and looking forward to complete this soon...

26. Paradigm Studio 20 + Cambridge Audio Azur 640A

The Studio 20 is a very good looking speaker. It's gorgeous especially with the grills off. The Studio 20 also has an advantage that it is front ported so it should be easier to place closer to walls though when i heard it, it was 2 feet form the wall.

This could be good thing for a desktop setup like mine but i wouldn't know untill i tried it. Coming to the sound i played my usual tracks and i can say one this this combination brought a smile to my face. The delivery was effortless and one thing i noticed was that the soundstage was enormous. The demo room was pretty large but the Studio 20 seemed to fill it with ease.

I found the sound to have an very airy quality to it. The bass was quite good and so were the mids and highs. The vocals were breathtaking and i was extremely impressed with what i heard.

This has been a good journey and i'm very close to making a decision. Just a few more speakers to demo and i'll be making a purchase soon.

Top choices at this point in time....

1. PSB Synchrony Two B
2. Paradigm Studio 20
3. PSB Image B6
4. Mezzo 1 or Mezzo 2

Cheers :)
