Stereo Speakers for Rs 50000-60000

Hi Rana,
You seem to have visited such a good store in NYC. Just browsing through their collection, it looks awesome.
I was little disheartened that how could you miss out from Auditioning Devore fidelity Gibbon with Leben or Harbeth or the spendors.
or for that matter any of the Devore models.
Tube selection of the store should mate well with their speaker collections

i'm looking at bookshelves for my desktop setup.
yep they had quite a lot of good stuff in there. i'll be going there again to demo some other speakers. They have opened at a new location now. When i was there earlier this year at the older store they had 2 demo rooms and there was another gentleman who was auditioning the Dynaudios in so i had to wait for 15 mins in the next demo room where they had this lovely large fat almost squarish looking speaker running some country music and man it was good. It sounded heavenly.
I didn't inquire about same as i was in their for bookshelves but yes this time i plan to check out the Spendor and Haberth. Honestly earlier i was not even aware of them. It's only recently that i've added them to the demo list after reading up a bit more on the net. I thought if i'm gonna be spending dough on speakers then i better demo all that is available in my price range....

27. Harbeth P3ESR + Naim 5i + Rega Dac
I was very keen on the Harberths as i'd read good reviews on them. They are quite compact and very well built and look up market. They looked the tough and built to last.
I was very impressed by the smooth sound signature of the P3ESR. In a way they were relaxed sounding but had all the details readily available for the listening pleasure. The Vocals especially stood out. Bass were tight. A very effortless speaker with an sooth and easy sound.
28. Dynaudio Focus 160 + Naim 5i + Rega Dac.
The 160 i was told by the dealer is the new part of the revamped Focus line and is the replacement of the 140. The speakers had had a pretty long burn in since arriving at the demo room. They looked gorgeous and had a lovely fit and finish.
I found the 160 to be very lively and seemed in a mood to party. Top end was detailed yet smooth. The presentation was neutral yet very exciting. The Naim 5i is a pretty engaging performer and i feel the synergy between it and Focus 160 was perfect. Top marks to the combination then. Sound stage was large and the speakers seemed to disappear. Very nice indeed.
The more speakers i demo the more i understand them. But it seems the more i know, the less i know.
Although if there is one thing clear then it's the fact that the more speakers i demo the more clearer it seems to me why i love the PSB and why they are still my top pick after 28 different demos. All my listening till now makes me think that eventually i'll either settle for either an Synchrony 2B or a Image B6 because even though all the speaker i demoed till now are excellent in their own ways the PSB sound is the one i've enjoyed the most till now. Only other speaker that truly won my heart was the Mordaunt Short Mezzo 1.
Top picks as of today...
1. PSB Synchrony Two B
2. PSB Image B6
3. Mezzo 1 or Mezzo 2

I am looking to set-up the system where I would be going for the speakers first, then the AV receiver and lastly the DVD player (open to suggestions for changing the pecking order)
For Speakers, I am essentially looking for Bookshelfs and being in Mumbai (which rules out 'Jamo'), I'm looking at PSB and B&W.
-> On overall cost level, which one (PSB and B&W) is on the higher side?
-> What is the difference between the various ranges/ series in:
1) PSB namely Synchrony One B, Synchrony Two B, Imagine, Image and Alpha along with their respective costs?
2) B&W namely Nautilus, 800 Series Diamond, PM1, CM Series and 600 Series along with their respective costs?
-> Being short on the awareness of other brands/ makes, would love to have the inputs on other names in the market which i can shortlist for the auditions, given that i have a budget of ~50k

Both PSB & B&W are world renowned and well respected speakers which get favorable reviews and have multiple award winners in their stable. That being said both have their own sound signature and only you can decide which suits best to your ear. So do go for an audition of both.
B&W is from UK. I've had the chance to demo the 600 series and CM series. I found the 685 to be fairly neutral and engaging. It is a very accomplished speaker. The higher range CM series is to my ears a bit more smooth and laid back. The CM series is also very well respected and superb in all areas. I was very impressed with the CM5 and CM7. Next up is the 800 series which i have not heard as yet but they also have a huge following and considered to be amongst the best in the world. Nautilus is their highest product.
The PSB is a Canadian brand. They are immensely popular all around the world and known for their all-rounder sound. They are excellent speakers and represent tremendous value.
I found the PSB sound to be neutral and towards warm/smooth. Another word would be musical. These speakers are exceptional for long listening hours. The PSB hierarchy from top to bottom is Synchrony, Imagine, Image and Alpha.
I don't know current costs of each model of either brand but that should be easily available via phone call to the respective dealers.
Another thing, in my opinion there is no best speaker. No one speaker is better than another speaker ( in their respective price range ). They are just like different colors of the rainbow. You just have to find out which color you like the best. And the only way to know that is by the way of Demo.

29 A. Nola Boxers + Simaudio Moon 250i + Peachtree iDac
Lets start with the speakers. These are delicious to look at. Very beautifully crafted with sleek lines. Were they the most beautifully finished speakers i've seen yet..? Possibly yes..!! But the real value of a speaker to me is in how it sounds. And let me tell you all the Nola Boxer sounds amazing.
With the above combination the sound was a very smooth affair with just the right amount of treble. The mid range was perfect and the bottom end was just right. Mind you the Nola Boxers are larger than they look in pictures and in the demo room they were a a few feet from the wall. If you have the space these bookshelves are excellent for the way they sound. I found the music to be flowing effortlessly and it had a magical quality about it.
29 B. Nola Boxers + McIntosh MA6300 + Peachtree iDac
The dealer setup the Boxers next with the next level amp the McIntosh MA6300. These two are a perfect match for each other .The Mcintosh with it's retro look and and those blue lights looks absolutely amazing if you like that kind of style. The meters inside the blue light look very interesting and the Nola Boxer with the McIntosh makes a good looking couple.
Coming to the sound of these two together i can say the Nola retains all of it's earlier mentioned qualities but there is an change in sound with this new setup. I felt this combination to be more three dimensional. The sound field seemed larger. Probably i said the same thing in two different ways there ot probably not.
The sound remained very detailed yet smooth and natural with an air of a bit more liveliness.
Both the combinations sounded a bit different from each other yet the quality of Nola Boxers was there to see, rather hear. Yes they sounded incredible. And this has been only the second speaker in all my demos to really move me and make me feel a certain way.
However all said and done in my heart of hearts my no 1 is still the PSB Synchrony 2B. It does everything all the other speakers do and then does that little bit more. It's hard to put it in words here but everytime i've heard the PSB Synchrony 2B ( and i've heard them a few times now ) i've known that these are the speakers i want to buy.
But i can only be sure once i've heard all the speakers in my list. Though i won't be too surprised if in the end i buy the Synchrony 2B. It's almost a certain in my mind.
