Subwoofer in the 30K range

Hi,

Would advise to check the low frequencies of the sub and the speakers you are using and see if you are getting value....no point going for a sub which delivers the same frequencies like you speakers....

Carry your music + movies and decide...if a sub has anything lower that 28hz is considered good for both music + movies...

Check dsp pro550 also....and finalise...all the best...

Almost finalized on Velodyne impact 10 but without auditioning.
What's a good price for it?
getting a quote of 28K from htstore and local dealer.
Is it a fair price?

Velodyne is a great sub. Iam using itas one of the sub in my ht. Iam using 12 inch variant. Try getting impact 12 which will be couple of thousands more. Yrecently one of our forum member got the impact 12 for 30k from htstore.

Hi,

I am sure you have read the specs and reviews for both models and there are ample reviews available..of course there is a cost difference...so in a nut shell it's overall performance which factors all these aspects...are you still looking out for more detailed responses to decide? End of the day, you are the ultimate user who will be using it!

I back that up, for Movies I can tell you for a room smaller than 250 Sq feet this Sub is sufficient to shake! I used Velodyne Impact 12 and bought it from HTstore for about 32K

Finally, got the Velodyne impact 12 :clapping::clapping: :yahoo::yahoo:

Yet to test it properly.
What settings are you all using for this sub and what kind of placement ?
I have Monitor Audio BR2 bookshelves which claim to go down to 42 HZ.
I am thinking to set crossover at 60 HZ . Will do some trial and error.
I did not find Audyssey setting for sub. Need to look further.

Also, the green light is always ON as long as the AC power is there.
I though it will be on standby when no signal is there. What is the expected behavior?

Thanks everyone for your inputs and cheers.

I've got the impact 12 too, the light goes to green only when it receives signal, when power is on and no signal is received the light turns to red. Can you share the crossover and volume levels/settings that you're experimenting with, I'm still fiddling around after 6 months of usage.

congrats on ur purchase do share some pics, 60hz for bookshelves, u shud set if for 80 -100, thereby the bookshelves will really sing, it will deliver the tonal qualities its supposed to, on the other hand, if u set it 60 it will try to play those low notes, which is not its forte, so my suggestion wud be 80-100 for bookshelves, velodyne is a good performer so let it handle the lows,
happy listening, btw which amp r u using?

Thanks everyone for the wishes.

I spent the last day and half listening to various movies and music and also fiddling with the settings. I have not heard many subs but this is a superb sub and I don't think anyone will be disappointed with this sub.
Short story - excellent for movies, tight but punchy bass enough to shake your room. Rating - 10/10.
Good for music - relatively fast and tight but does lack behind in some tracks but I think any sub at this price range will be little lacking in music. Rating - 8/10

Overall, very satisfied.

I am having some issues with the Audyssey though.
I ran Audyssey several times and each time it sets my bookshelf speakers as large and crossover frequency to 40 HZ which is wrong. Also, it sets the SUbwoofer channel level to -11 DB. So, I had to manually set the following -
Front speakers to small
Subwoofer mode = LFE (does not matter as the front is set to small)
LPF for LFE = 120 HZ
Crossover freq = 90 Hz. (Still experimenting. 80-100 seems to be the sweet spot)
Crossover in sub = 100 Hz.
Subwoofer channel level = 0 Db

With the above settings, I am very satisfied with the output. Hopefully, the settings make sense to people.

Dont manually adjust the levels after running audyssey. Try yhe below ateps for optimal performance.

1. Place the subwoofer by using the crawl method.
2. Reset the avr
3. Set all the speakers to small and sub to yes.
4. Set the phase in the sub to 0. Set the volume level on sub at 12o clock position or at 10o clock. Anything between it. Dont increase the sub level more than that.
5. Now run the audyssey in you avr.
6. Check the speaker if they have got changed to large. Denon will actually change that.
7. If you still see the sub level at -11 fb then the room correction is wrong. If its above -9 it is okay.
you can now increase the volume on your sub according to your taste.

thanks for your suggestions buddy.
I have already followed instructions as per the manual which is more or less same as what you said above.

Are you saying Audyssey setting the front speakers as large and crossover to 40 Hz is fine? Also, it did set the Subwoofer level to -11 db every time.

I read in the Audyssey forums that it is fine to change some of the setting manually after running Audyssey. What issue do you see?

Audyssey dont set them actually to large. It is the denon that sets based on the crossover frequency calculations given by audyssey. Audyssey sets the levels of each speaker. Try to change them to small even it is set to large.

It is recommended not to change the volume after audyssey has been run, especially for the sub. what has actually happened is Audyssey did not take the sub much into consideration and used the fronts to take those frequency.

May I know wats the volume level you kept on sub before you ran audyssey?

It was at 12 o'clock position.
Also, if I didn't change the Sub level, the bass was way too low.
I might have cranked up the volume on the back of the Sub to get more bass but I thought something is wrong.
I am very confused with Audyssey but the sound is pretty good now with the above settings.
May be some of the Audyssey functions will not work properly since I have tinkered with settings.

EDIT - I will probably set the Subwoofer volume to 10 o'clock and try it once.
Audyssey says that I can set the speakers to small and set a crossover after the calibration. So, I think I am understanding what is happening.

Yes you can set the crossover after audyssey. The thing is we need to do some bass management before running audyssey. Audyssey will be doing the room correction, it is also important to give a good platform from our end for audyssey to give the good possible calculation.

If you have a db meter you can try that too. you can also use a decibel meter app as well to set the volume before calibration.
