Personally and AFAIK, I have a few things to say about subs.
For drivers of 12" or more, sealed enclosures are preferred but for 10' or less ported ones are considered more suitable. Also, the larger the driver the better it is for absolutely LFE. Although all types of sub designs have their pros and cons, I would ideally prefer a 15" downfiring driver in a sealed box enclosure with the amp housed outside the cabinet. But then, a downfiring design means that you have to place it on high enough spikes as also live with the fact that the driver is exposed from below. If you choose to avoid that then you have to go in for a bandpass enclosure if you still want to retain the down-firing deployment. That, in turn necessitates porting the enclosure, somewhat like this.
