Hi Members,

So as the title suggests, I'm in the market for a good atmos (5.1.2) setup that fits my budget. (Audio Only)
I move into a new home in about 6 months and I can finally have a home cinema setup that I have always wanted and this will be my first home theater setup.

I want to preface the post by saying that I haven’t yet auditioned anything and everything I write below is based on ‘internet research’. I'm no audiophile by any stretch of imagination and I am not chasing the perfect sound stage, but I do enjoy good movie immersion with boombastic bass, and that's the motivation for this purchase.

The Requirement :
  • I want immersive audio for about 85% watching movies and 15% music. All of my content will be consumed on OTT with the occasional movie running on my Plex server.
  • I want enough bass to be felt in the bones but it also has to be balanced and not overpowering everything else.
  • Woofer has to be concealed into a custom built TV unit (Non negotiable by wife) but will have a mesh door
  • All speakers will be wall mounted, none of them will be placed on a surface.
  • I don't have the space for floor standing speakers, so it will have to be bookshelves.
  • Sofa is flushed to the fall, so ideally non bulky surrounds speakers.
  • Rear speakers have to be a little more subtle/smaller if possible, even if it means compromising on sound a little bit.
  • Aesthetics are important to me, boxy looking speaks are not ideal, but its a compromise i’m willing to make.

The Room
My TV room is about 13 feet by 9 feet with a 10 feet ceiling. I have also attached an image to understand the layout.
The longer walls have a window and a door so I have 9 feet for viewing and seating.
13 feet.png

So the diagram and its content are not to scale, but I want to bring attention to the surround speakers. If I mount them on the back wall instead of the side wall, they might protrude past my head. Instead I plan to mount them on the side walls facing the sofa. Is this okay?

The Front LR speakers and the Center speaker will be mounted at ear level, Center speaker will come under the TV (As of posting this, it will be a 65 inch Bravia 3 2024 model)

The red semi transparent dots are height/Ceiling speakers. I have to move them overhead the sofa instead of the midpoint between the tv and the viewer because of the fan and cassette AC obstruction. This is not ideal but its what I got to work with.

The Budget
Front (LR) - 30K
(C)enter - 25K
(S)urround LR - 20K
(W)oofer - 40K
AVR - 45K
Ceiling - 15K

This goes slightly above my budget and i would like to dial it back to 1.5 instead of 1.75 lakhs. 1.75L is the hard limit on what i'm willing to spend.
I've mostly decided on the Height speakers to be the JBL 6IC and the AVR to be the Denon S760H.

The Short List
So it comes down to the 5.1 then, here my options and thoughts :
LR = Front Left, right , C = Center, SLR = Surround Speakers, W = Woofer

  1. Assembled
LR = Q Acoustics 3020i
C = Q Acoustics 3090Ci
S = Sonodyne Sonus 3540
W = Taga Harmony TSW 212SE

This is an assembled system that just about fits the budget.
+ I love how the Q Acoustics look
- Slightly over budget
- Sound signature won’t match across the surrounds

  1. JBL
LR = JBL A130
C = JBL Stage 135C
S = JBL A120
W = JBL A100P

+ Consistent signature across speakers
- Boxy look as compared to Q acoustics

3. ELAC Cinema 12 Package
+ Consistent sound signature
- Not much information online
- Boxy

The Confusion:

  1. People say you can always turn down the bass on the 12 inch sub instead of getting a 10 inch. My room is small so I'm wondering if a 12 inch is overkill?
  2. My Woofer will be inside a tv cabinet, which will be closed with a mesh door. Does port location matter? What are my options?
  3. Do the surround speakers matter that much? Not asking whether I should have them but whether it’s necessary to match the sound signature?

The Advice I’m looking for:

Like I said, I am a novice and this is the first step. I want to narrow down on the selection to at least 3 before I start auditions.
I am open to more models and combinations that fit in this budget.
Looking for critique, recommendations and advice from owners or people who have had experience on these models. T.

Thank you for reading the long post and all recommendations in advance.

Hey,
If you are in Goa , I would suggest getting in touch with iCHOS #9823117659. When I visited the his demo room he had almost the same setup as you are looking for.

It's best to audition as much as possible and form an opinion while you take inputs from the forum.

Of the options you have listed I would prefer the Qacoustic based system by a margin over the other two. They are quiet a few levels above a HTiB system, I can vouch for the same as I moved from a Polk TL1600 based system to Qacoustics , it might overshoot your budget but will a good investment nonetheless. Surround speaker mismatch is a non issue , as long you get the settings right you will not feel much of a difference tonality wise.

Subwoofer inside a cabinet will rattle the cabinet too , won't sound the best. If possible would recommend to keep it outside on the floor itself.

I like QA speakers. I don't think therenis kuch difference between 3010i and Sonodyne.

Subwoofer in a TV unit is not a problem, I am doing it image attached. However,
  • It needs to be front firing. Down firing will cause rattles in TV unit.
  • Needs to be sealed, the rear port will cause boominess inside a cubby.
So, in my opinion, get a sealed, front firing subwoofer and you should be fine.

A mesh in front of the speakers is a bad idea. It will instruct the sound. Been there done that, and will suggest to avoid.

In your layout there is space in the corner to place the subwoofer in the open, and also not be visible. See if you can convince her. I didn't have any space and hence went with this approach.

For your room size a 10 inch is fine. I am using REL HT/1003 MKII in a similar layout and very happy.

At this price I would just get a q995C or q995D soundbar from Samsung and call it a day. I have very large speakers in my living room which are connected to a decent amp and when I demoed the Samsung I was literally surprised how good hit was for movies. I would say the subwoofer is decent but won’t break your bones like the large ones. But I don’t think keeping any sub in a cabin is a good idea a

doesn't have to match your fronts, just get a good set of speakers for surrounds

most important part for this room to be good will be room treatment, else because of the size and reflections it will be a mess, hope you have planned for that

Thanks for the reply. I am going to try and convince the wife to keep the woofer outside, but plan to slowly convince her at the auditions this weekend.

Yes, we are treating the wall behind the sofa unit for a little sound dampening/diffusion and maybe a rug. Nothing too crazy because it's still primarily a living space and not dedicated home theater room.

From where are you getting 760H for 45k? Hope not from amazon, as it will be devoid of warranty
Thanks for bringing this to my notice, I wasn't aware of this.
I was indeed planning on getting it from amazon, but I think now I will get it retail with most of the equipment.

I have AVR-1300 and pioneer AJ speakers - works well for me. Source is multiple - Amazon Fire Tv cube, chromecast, dvd player (yessss) and a 20 year old pioneer universal disc player!

You can also loom at Marantz AVR Cinema 70 with Taga Harmony 506 or 606 speakers lackage along with 807s as Atmos speakers or TCW 190R in case you are installing in ceiling.

For subwoofer sealed front firing shall be good but cant say if you can get one in 10 inches. I would suggest to go for 12 inches instead. Can you share LxBxH you have left for the subwoofer in the TV unit?

Hi Members,

It's been 2 weeks since I posted, I just thought I would share an update on how things are going.
I started the audition process last saturday. I went in with a heavy bias of what i consider to be good speakers. The internet hive mind has its favourites. Ever so often you find contradicting sentiments.. anyways, Internet research has convinced be the Q acoustics should be my LCRs thanks to their amazing price to performance. So I wanted to demo them the most.

Shop 0 - Croma, Juhu
Saturday morning the wife and I visited Croma in Juhu for some appliance details, this gave me a chance to hear the Bose and Sonos sound bars. Honestly, I like both. They were both impressive but I liked the sound of the Bose more. This was just for fun though, I don't want a soundbar for the tv room. Both soundbars were auditioned with the woofer connected, the Bose even has surround speakers. Maybe someday for the room.

Shop 1 - Cinebels, Bandra
Later we visited Cinebels/cinerama in Bandra. Cinebels keep mostly Klipsch, Jamo and Onkyo stuff.
The showroom staff were pleasant and professional. I auditioned the Klipsch reference theater 5.1 system. At this point I had nothing to compare it with but I did enjoy the sound. The scene I auditioned was the first race from ready player one. The speakers are over priced here in my opinion, but I haven't discussed discounts yet, so I could be wrong.

Shop 2 - MZAudio, Bandra
Next we decided to check out the MZ audio Distributions in Bandra. There's no audition-shop anymore, it's just a Marantz Service center. Maybe a store existed once. Now its just a service center. I looked for a number only before coming here but found nothing, but I came anyways since it was closeby.

Shop 3 - Telome, Bandra
Telome is one of the places I found browsing the forums here .I was not able to get in touch with the store owner on any number provided on the website. Shop was shut that day when we reached. we asked the neighbouring shop owners if the owner is expected back soon. They told us he operates the place on his will with no set schedule. So we left, maybe we will comeback again sometime in the future.

3 Shops down and I was only able to demo 1 system. Not a great start.

Shop 4 - Viola Home Theater
Next, we headed North to Juhu and visited Viola. Kavish (the owner) attended to us was very warm and welcoming. You can tell he is passionate about what he does. He had us demo the Mission cubes, KEF T101 satellites (LCR) and some floor standing speakers (Heco maybe) .
What I was most impressed how good the satellites sounded for the size. I personally didn't like the KEF, though the wife was excited about this form factor. I dont like the way the slim KEF's look and while they sounded good, I think the Klipsch and even the cubes sounded nicer.
We also auditioned canton bookshelf speakers and they were by far the best sounding speaker that day. Even better than the Floorstanding ones. Just way outside the budget :oops:

Shop 5 - The Shop
After Viola we went to the Shop which is just a few shops down. The staff here were not at all interested in having us as clients, They were so unmotivated that I had to demand their attention and convince them to give me an audition. They did setup the ELAC bookshelves after I insisted but the entire time I felt l was making them do something against their will. So after listening to snippets of a few tracks as a courtesy, we left. I don't think I'm coming back here.

This was the last shop for today, and sadly, i was not able to find the Q acoustics anywhere. Through the week I went back on the internet to search for a place to audition the 3020i's. I called up ProFX because the speakers are listed on their website, they did not have them.
I then got in touch with shops in the northern suburbs, no one had these speakers.

Shop 6 - Bombay Audio
few days later I found a place called Bombay Audio. They had the 3020i's in one of their social media posts . So i took a chance and got in touch on Whatsapp and they confirmed that they do have the 3020i available for audition. I spoke to Ajay who is the Owner and we setup a date for today, Dusshera. We did the long drive to Kurla and I finally got to audition the Q acoustic. My first impressions were " wow, this speaker is long". The thing looks like a Dachshund. The photos always show it from the front and a 45 degree angle. Looking at it's profile I coudn't help but think how much it would protrude from the wall past the television. Because I planned to mount them.
I pushed that thought for a later and decided to hear the speakers before worrying about their size. They sounded good.
Ajay told me that these are his personal speakers. He was also transparent about his setup being over 10L so not to expect this kind of sound at home on a normal receiver from the same speakers.
We had a discussion about home theater audio and a lot of what Ajay said resonated with me and made sense.

Because to me, in my reality, the Q Acoustic speakers sounded great, but not so much better than all the other speakers I auditioned.
What? How can that be? everyone says they are amazing. Maybe they ARE everything people say about them. Maybe I am the problem.

The Lesson
So I thought about it all day. I have concluded that my level of hearing sound is not quite on the level of most enthusiasts. I'm no purist. I like the convenience of streaming my content on Spotify and Netflix rather than seeking the highest quality media in uncompressed lossless audio at all times via flac or bluray discs. Honestly, I can barely tell the difference. If I really really try, maybe I can..but the difference doesn't bother enough to give up the convenience.

Ajay said for the room size, satellites will be plenty good. considering my need is 85% movies. Also for the 15% music.. I'm by my own admission- no audiophile.
He also said a good subwoofer is essential to complement them.
So now with all this new information I'm back to the drawing board. Here are the speakers I am going to audition going forward.
  • Cabasse Eole 4
  • Sony's Quad
  • Orb Audio mod 2
  • will re-audtition the Klipsch Reference Theater again.
AVR
Lastly, while I was fixed on the Denon S760H, I found the Yamaha RX V6a is a worthy contender. In my opinion the Yamaha looks neater but
I guess this will comedown to whatever the better deal is. Since it looks like both fill the function and are praised for the performance. So it's a Samsung vs iPhone kinda argument here.

Subwoofer
Next steps is to head to Pro-FX to audition subwoofers and anything else in the market.

Thanks for reading my long post. Like always I'm open to suggestions and recommendations.

I was able to convince the wife to leave the subwoofer outside the cabinet. So size is not a concern anymore.
I am looking at the Polk hts 10, I was also recommended the REL TZero . I feel 12 inches might be too large, but I will not rule it out yet.

12 is always better.

12 inches in minimum for me not matter how small the room is
Sealed ones shall be compact around same size compared to a ported 10 inch

Hi guys, I'm back for an update.

Yesterday I decided to visit ProFX in Worli.
I was able to audition the POLK ES-20 as mains with the ES30 Center and ES10’s as surrounds with R60CI atmos speakers and the POLK HTS-10 as the subwoofer.
This has been my favourite setup so far. I am sold on the subwoofer already, It looks great and sounds even better.
I know most people insist on a 12 inch, but I have my reservations about it which I will discuss later.

The ES20s sounded great but were a little larger than what I’m looking for. So I asked the staff to replace the ES-20 with the ES10 which are sold as surround speakers but they still sounded really good. Almost so good that in a blind movie test I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.So I think something in the middle like the ES-15 will serve me well.
The center speaker ES-30 is massive, comically massive. At the same time it loosk so good, aesthetically it's my style, but realistically I can’t have something that large in the smallish room, so we did some A/B testing with the ES30 and ES35 which is a smaller center, surprisingly both the wife and I liked the sound of the ES35 more and the size is more befitting too. I am now considering ES-15 + ES-35 as my LCR with the ES-10 and HTS-10.

We walked out of ProFX and just a few doors down is AK international. They are dealers for Focal. The SIB-EVO is on my wishlist, so we walked in to check if we could demo them.

There we auditioned the SIB EVO 5.1 package and the DOME FLAX 5.1.
My first impression was how big the evo satellites speakers are in person, they look really small in online pictures.
Larger than its footprint however, is it’s performance.
We were shown a scene from Padmavat, a dialogue scene followed by the Ghoomer song. my god! I had to reconfirm that we were indeed listening to the SIB EVO and not some high end speaker. Really good sound and priced really well. Only downside is that the woofer didn’t deliver bass quite as well as the Polk did. But this is easily my second favorite sounding speaker. I also like the way they look, except for the center speaker. I might even consider this if the do a 5.0 package.

Next, we saw the same clip on the dome flax. These are twice the price of the evos but they didn’t sound like twice the experience. Don’t get me wrong, they still sound fantastic as a package. Better than the SIB EVO by a little bit, but the price jump is not justified in my opinion. They come with a slimmer subwoofer that sounds just as good as the EVOs even though it is smaller. So it is basically a smaller-neater package with no compromise on sound.

Next the staff asked us to listen to their in-wall 100 series with a 12 inch sub, Way out of our budget but why the heck not : Now this felt like a sizable upgrade. This was the new best sounding system, that sub made the entire room rumble. Now this felt like proper ‘cinema’.
Too much cinema for the wife though. She told me later that this kind of bass makes her feel anxious. I will do a re-audition of the hts-10 and 12 later before I pull the trigger. As of now I am happy with the hts-10

Just want to add that the staff at both these places were really nice. They did not downplay other brands to make their own shine. They respected all players in the audio business. I like the honesty on display and I commend them for this.

So now all that’s left is to audition the Cabasse Eole 4 speakers. I am a little concerned on how hard they are to come by and little to no establishment of its service network in India, but I have only heard great things about them. So I cannot make this decision without hearing them. They are also a convinient size which will make the surround channels easier to install and point.

Thanks for reading , as always open to suggestions and experience to guide me.

Hey heatednemz. While you are at it I think you should take a look at the SONY bravia theater quad atmos soundbar. It's not a traditional soundbar. It's almost within your budget and the 4 flat speakers should be a good fit for your room. While I haven't personally heard them but I too am researching a movie setup for my room. Cheers.

Audition properly. I found Polks fatiguing when I auditioned them.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
