Hi All,

In recent past, I am getting very much interested in getting into the Turn Table.

Could you folks suggest how do I start about it? I need a suggestion of what to buy? Where to Buy? What to check? etc.

More of a beginners guide.

I just looked at a few options:

>> Crosley CR8005D-BK
>> Audio Technica AT-LP60BK

Kindly, advice.

Also, where can I do a demo of the same in Pune? Or Do I get it from US?

Cheers,
Balzac

Hi Balzac

IMHO, If you are a new entry into the T.T world, first you try with an used turntable. Then you may choose a good new one.

Thanks
Ramesh

You can start with a Denon DP29F. This Denon is a decent starter turntable and easy to use. It won't damage your records too. Please don't go anywhere near a Crosley unless it is a C series.

A brand new denon dp29f is available for 12k. Will connect you to the seller if you are interested.

Thank You for the information guys. But, I am a complete Novice here.

Could you suggest some links where I could see more details about Turntable in general?

Also, is there any shop in Pune where I could do a demo of the same? Or any FM here from Pune who owns a TT?

Cheers!

Marantz TT5005 is good with built in Phono.

Getting audition in Pune is difficult.

Oceanic sound and vision at East Street has some project TT but those are in higher range. Better you watch the for sale for TT.

Although Amazon etc has lots of tempting options like those from Crosley and Studebaker, all these products are coming from USA, they don't appear to have any Indian warranty and no service centers either. I would be apprehensive of buying them. Maybe someone who has them can comment.

I know someone who has bought a Crosley and looked happy with it. However, I have doubts about these cheap turntables that they may damage the records.
Its better to go for a turntable from established players if you have some amp/speaker setup to go with it or go for a used turntable in good condition. Many times these do come up in the for sale section or other sources.

Yes the cheapest from Crosley are better avoided, other than C series.

Apart from the Marantz TT on hifimart.com the other options are
Audio Technica LP 60 @12k
Sony PSLX300 @ 14k
Pioneer Plx 990 @17k approximately if you order from Amazon US /UK of course no warranty whatsoever.
None of them have a option to change the default cartridge in my opinion, so you're stuck as far as future upgrade is concerned.

My pick would be Audio technica LP60 although Sony model is a equally good option. Marantz TT, if you don't want the hassles of importing from abroad.

There are lots of music lovers in Pune and there are ads on olx from Pune for used turntables. As rightly suggested by FM earlier, Philips GA242 is good turntable and will give a lot of present day medium range new turntables a run for their money.

I had a Philips 242. Absolute rubbish if compared to any of the present day tables like project or Rega. If u plan on using cheap 200 rupee lps, then yes the 242 is amazing. If u plan on investing in music records that are expensive and upgrading to a good cartridge, don't even consider the 242. Waste of time effort and money. Personal experience. My personal opinion.

I concur, I've heard many of these, absolute crap. there are good technics TT on Mumbai olx check if budget is a issue.

Sorry, just because you have heard a TT that did not sound good does not mean that it is crap.
Please see this forum for opinion of other members as well.
I had purchased a brand new Rega RP1 which was absolute rubbish, but that does not mean that all Rega TTs are crap!!!!

Another point is when a FM above is already asking for opinion regarding a "FIRST TURNTABLE", I do not understand how he can guide another member who is also asking for help in selecting a TT in 15K range.

Please read my replies carefully on the same thread , I've been listening to most available used TT in Hyderabad and some in Bangalore, Cochin over last 7 months, most of the Philips, Technics lower end and Panasonic posted on olx I've heard. I am stating on the basis of my experience.
That's how I decided to upgrade my initial budget of 10k for a TT to find a decent newer TT at 30k , so as to give it a decent chance before concluding that vinyl isn't for me. Since I was unable to decide between the few shortlisted models, I created a thread so current users can help with inputs.
BTW I'd have gladly bought your RP1 and saved some bucks if you weren't happy with it [emoji6]. Not to mention your input would have been valuable.

Ultimately, music is a very personal choice as much as food, so having all sorts of inputs before deciding is always better.

Have been refraining from commenting but have been watching with keen interest. One aspect which should be always kept in mind is (as forum member, Record Player famously says) a turntable is not just a source but its like an instrument. An instrument is absolutely worthless when in the hands of a novice but can transport one to dreamland, if played by an expert. Someone who is experienced with turntables can make an ordinary turntable sound excellent with proper servicing, tweaking and calibration. Whereas someone who has little or no experience can make even the best ones sound pretty ordinary. A turntable is not a plug-and-play device and the number of variables associated with the resulting sound are numerous. My father had a very ordinary HMV calypso record player with ceramic cart, running via a custom valve set up with large horn speakers and when he upgraded to a Garrard with Shure M75-6, not many could tell the difference :) He was a great believer in phonostage tweaking. But that's another story. In my opinion, someone with experience of turntables is in better control of the various variables that effect sound and hence the results are much better. Some of these variables are mechanicals of the turntable, platter mat, cartridge choice and calibratioin, stylus maintenance, tonearm choice, calibration and tracking, headshell and tonearm wiring, interconnects, phono stage, amplification, speakers, vinyl cleaning, vinyl storage and also aspects like quality of pressing. Sounds like a lot, right? Yes...it can be very easy but if you want better results, it starts getting a lot more difficult :)
