Suggestions for Audio

I am a complete ignorant as far as AV products are concerned. Please give a little detail to whatever you suggest bearing in mind that Denon, Onkyo and Oppo are all the same company to me and terms like DAC and AVR and whatever else you guys keep discussing, sound alien to me.

I recently bought a Panasonic C10 42" plasma TV. I have a DTH and an AC ryan POHD which is on my wireless network so that it can play files from my desktop, laptop in addition to the ones on its internal drive.

I have a collection of about 400 blu ray rips that I have made over the last couple of years and am enjoying these days on my PDP.

I have with myself a 13 year old panasonic "music system" (as it used to be called in those days). It played cassettes, FM and I could hook up my sony CD player to it. It has (I think) 400 watts speakers (2 about 2.5 feet long).

I have connected the audio part of my TV out to these speakers through my music system. I do get a fairly decent output.

Now I am looking for a better audio option as output. I will mostly be watching movies and also listening to some music (songs, ghazals, qawallis, a little bit of rock etc.).
My budget would be around 10k.
Are there any reasonable options considering my requirements and budgets?

The budget of 10K may not really be sufficient to provide you with a full system upgrade.

However, what can be done is to buy the system in parts.

My suggestion would be to use the 10K to buy new speakers and pair them up with your current system. Look for bookshelf speakers from Wharfedale, Tannoy (mercury) and others as mentioned in various threads here. You should be able to pick up a good pair for around 9k - 12k or thereabouts.

Try the speakers out with your system. Maybe you can carry your current system to the audio showroom to see if it can drive the speakers.

Later on you can invest in a decent stereo amplifier or even a 5.1 channel AV amplifier, as budget allows.

Or you can look around for a good second hand system.

All my input be it audio or video barring DTH is going to come from playon Hd which I have connected to my tv using hdmi.

Am afraid 10k is not enough for you to set up a HT. The best option imo is to be patient and save up, for atleast a decent entry level HTIB from the likes of Onkyo. Later, you can substitute the fronts with a good pair of bookshelves as suggested by Sumain. Either ways you are looking at a budget of around 30k min.

But from what I have gathered on this forum, stereo speakers are generally preferred over 5.1 isnt it?

surround system with good l-r speakers will do no need for seperate systems,but i dont think you can get them for less than 10k,

most of the low cost 5.1 systems comes with dvd player

Hd channels in dth is claiming to be 5.1, there is some problems though now in quality, but in india hd dth is just launched and will improve in quality in future i hope

For 12K, U can get John Barrel 5.0 speakers & second hand A/V Receiver.
My friend bought new John Barrel 5.0 for 6K and for 6.5K he got a 5 yr old Pioneer 5.1 A/V receiver (2nd hand). The sound quality is good. Only if you increase the volume too high (80%) the speakers shiver...

For starts, you can look for sub-10k used AV reciever ( already on sale here in this forum). And add 10-15k speakers which are plenty.

Yeah, you have two options sub-10k
1) Used AV reciever

2) Used or new Indian brand amplifier like Norge

Dont confuse between a AV R and a amplifier, AVR is for multi-channel audio and video processing for movies primarily,music secondarily;

while amplifer is usally for 2 channel audio processing that is of often better quality sound.

So what would be my best option?
I do not have a dedicated room for a HT. Budget is a secondary problem. I wonder I would if I would underutilise all the stuff.
I want better sound. Maybe I can just buy speakers, hook it up to my existing system Panasonic SA-HM260 with integrated amplifier (this is what it says). and later get myself an amp/ AVR after I am a little wiser by doing all the reading.

Try Norge 1000 stereo amplifier conect ur old speakers surely you will not be disapointed. Dont buy it just pick ur speakers visit Norge show room and give a try. also u can compare those costly speakers available in the show room with ur speakers. May be the difference of quality may be of Rs 2k, surely you will be saving 10k. Hope u got it.
