SVSound Now available in INDIA!

Is the SVS SB10 a good sub for music only?

I need fast transient response as i listen to psytrance which has a very fast bass beat so basically there should be no boom, lagging of sound. It should be precise and tight, musical bass which should be able to complement the main speakers bass line speed.

Other options in similar price range would be a HSU ported model or BK XLS200. But with psytrance ive noticed 90% of the time the port makes the bass a little slow as compared to the main speakers so leaning towards a sealed subwoofer.

The sb10 offer looks tempting please advice guys .... would the sb 10 suit my purpose well ?

TIA

Reviving an old thread for the exact same requirement above but not for trance music. :)

I am looking at the SB10 NSD for 99% music to pair with Fostex 166E full range speakers. I need something that can match these drivers in speed - they should not sound sluggish. As a more common benchmark for example, I suspect scanspeak kevlar drivers (in a 2-way) sluggish compared to Fostex. I did not do side by side A/B but it was the impression I got compared to my system at home. But I hope it conveys my requirement. ( I do not want to digress into what and where I heard it, lets just assume scanspeak kevlars are a benchmark for slow-er than what I need).

@Audiodelic, did you get these or any other? What are the listening impressions?
Edit: I need a subwoofer that does not "Thump!" purely for low level harmonics in music at low to moderate volumes. I would prize articulation and agility with a relaxed easy and effortless kinda sound above everything else like output levels and smashing effects.

Thanks

SVS is not something you should be looking for if you want a musical sub. This one is more about SPL and low level output than accuracy.

Which one do you suggest?

FYI from here (Way Down Deep Part One | Ultimateavmag.com) are some things to look at in a sub for movies. I guess these qualities would help in music as well?

...

The spatial contextthe sense of place (think of the bass reverberation cues that place you in a giant cavern in the Bridge of Khazad-dm scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring);

The sense of materialitymany broad-spectrum environmental sounds (e.g., wind, earthquakes, thunder, trains, jets, cars) have their root energy in the deep bass, below 40Hz; without that low-end foundation, they can sound hollow, untrue, even hokey; and

The emotional dimensionthe last time a movie made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, it could well have been a sinister rumble or otherworldly hum that set you up for danger ahead.

I have only started fishing around, so eventually I might go the DIY route if not satisfied with price/performance for music. :)

JL is in a league of its own, if you can afford it go for it, REL has a nice repo too but on the expensive side again.

What are the best sq sealed subs from internet direct companies ?

I know BK subwoofers have a good repo for musicality also, google for it there is some info on uk/european forums.

I've not heard an HSU but it does have a good reputation for musicality. Still building a sealed sub with eminence drivers is better financially and probably acoustically too if you can manage to get the design and amplification right.

Sigh! All these JL and REL are costly!! The SVS prices are also like almost double the International prices.

I think I should build a trial subwoofer with a local driver then look at spending $$$ the diy import route. This will have to wait until august end after my power amp project is finished.

Thanks guys for the quick response.

Meanwhile exploring the leads on this page: http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?cspkr&1100487565 :)

RELs are actually very well priced in India. They are almost at price parity with US prices.

Who is the distie in India? My speakers cost 31k. So I dont ideally want to spend +25K on a sub just for bottom 40hz frequencies below 80hz.

bot REL T3 and SVS model I quoted are about 36000/-. So REL is more musical than SVS? Everyone seems to prefer SVS for its price to performance in audio applications.

I can stretch the budget a bit provided it integrates well with the FRs.

This thread says Absolute Phase is the dealer. http://www.hifivision.com/speakers/10125-rel-acoustics-now-india.html

Let me check ... then again the cheapest T3 model needs to be available.

Thanks

Hi all, If you are looking for an expensive musical sub, then I suggest look no further than the Seatons SubMersive. It will cost you less than velodyne DD 15+ or DD 18+ and Jl f113 subs to import from US and will cost you similar to svs pb13ultra, but will sound a lot tighter and musical than all these subs. Mark seaton, who is the owner of this sub company is a very friendly guy to deal with. This sub is also very powerful and very good for movies, though it may lack a bit behind svs pb13 ultra around 20hz, which is the port tuning frequency of the svs pb13 ultra sub, but above and below that frequency, the submersive will produce more sound pressure. This sub has dual 15" driver. The drivers are placed on the opposite sides so as to cancel the vibrations, so this sub will not jump around one bit.

Kinda outside my budget but thanks for the FYI. Somebody already got that I think http://www.hifivision.com/speakers/5352-seaton-submersive-anyone.html

I am looking for an invisible sub that makes it feel like the added low frequencies are coming from the main 2.0 speakers. Not looking for earth shattering volume and SPL at low frequencies either, just want to feel the mere presence of lower harmonics which are outside the capabilities of my fullrange speakers.

I have a question about these subs that use speaker level inputs into the sub amp in order to blend more effectively with the main speakers - will drawing the sub cables from main stereo amp speaker terminals to the sub and to the speakers (via regular speaker cables) in parallel place an extra load on the amp?

I will be using a flea powered tube amp very soon hence am worried it will load the amp more than in the normal case.

Thanks

Hi Gobble,

The RELs have very high input impedance of the order of 100K for the speaker level inputs. So the current drawn will be very low.
