All,

I sent an email to Tata Sky's CEO Vikram Kaushik ([email protected]) regarding various issues that I was facing, and as a pleasant surprise, within a matter of few hours of sending the email I received a call from the CEO Office. Though the interaction didn't solve any of the problems, I felt it was a good gesture on their part to make a call and explain for about 30 minutes. The following were discussed:

1. No new Telugu channels are being added.

Answer: We are unable to add any more Telugu channels because of severe bandwidth issues. However, we take your inputs, we have our own surveys on the popularity of the channels...etc. So addition of new Telugu channels is purely subject to the bandwidth availability. (I wonder how they are adding other English new channels though. May be they will look into the popularity and their profit margins before deciding on adding any particular channel.

2. SVBC (Sri venkateswara Bhakti Channel) is being broadcast only in a small window and not in full scteen. Many people feel it stressful for eyeys, and are irritated.

Answer: This is also due to bandwidth issue. Lesser bandwidth is consumed if channels are broadcast in smaller window.

3. In TataSky+, if we recorded a program in a channel, and later change to a package that doesn't contain that channel, the recording will not be accessible to you. When you try to play the program later, it gives a message " You are not subscribed to this channel...".

Answer: This is purely a technical issue and the technical team is in the process of sorting it out. (However I clearly see this as a business tactic to make sure that the subscriber subscribes to the package for as long as possible)

4. Tata Sky website allows you to add packages, but if you want to "drop" a package, you have to call-up the Customer Service. Dropping a package is not possible through internet. This is clearly a tactic to create that "inconvenience" in the minds of the subscribers and discourage them to drop a package so easily.

Answer: No real satisfactory answer was given by the CEO Office for this question. However they said that we can drop a package just by sending a request to "[email protected]" from our "registered email address".

5. Tata Sky+ is theoritically capable of carrying HD, as it contains Component outputs, Digital Optical port for audio...etc. Then why Tata Sky is asking the subscribers to buy a new HD Box separately?

Answer: We need to see various things, however I am not aware of the technical details. We will get back to you on this.

Hope this helps to clarify some of the queries that you may be having in mind.

Note: A representative from CEO Office (Named Nityanand) called me, and not the CEO himself.

Did you discuss the horrible broadcast quality the SD channels have , the Video is full of Block Noise and suffers from MPEG compression artifacts ..........

No unfortunately, not. Because I got a feeling that he called me only as a gesture and he didn't have any solution for any of the problems. So I took it lightly.

The problems with TataSky have increased ever since they went the HD route... any coincidence here?

Guys are anyone facing Pixelation problem in TS, few channels like 9XM , Star News, AAj tak are among dese, the picture gets distorted for 1-2 secs.

yup but this problem was old and i think it has nothing to with the HD STB as i used to have this problem even with my SD STB

I too had written to them a few weeks back and had asked them similar Qs as naripeddi. I also asked or TataSky HD+, with recorder and there is good news on this front. They might be launching this within the next week/10 days. So everyone who stayed away from upgrading to HD just because it didnt have a recorder, start planning. No details of the cost though and I expect it to be in line with the competition!

I too, had a longish discussion with this gentleman from Tata Sky - while he was very courteous, unfortunately, he could not solve/ explain the the some of the points I had raised: including :
1. The so called " security" ID number - that is often displayed for over 60 seconds in the middle of the screen( my suggestion of usung a " watermark" display that was not oas obstrusive, was heard patiently - but to date nothing)
2. The various cross promotion ads, that cover 25% or more of the screen- often covering interesting aspects of the current programmes, was conveniently passed off to the various channels.

On the security ID number or finger printing as they call it, I was told it is to prevent piracy and that the TataSky logo is always in the same area and can be masked by people wanting to pirate but this number flash in different spot on the screen is difficult to do away with. Sounded fair and didnt push him further.
Also that this was done by the content provider (not the channels themselves or TataSky) and is a TRAI requirement.
I then asked him why do you do so much for a small population who might indulge in piracy rather than finding means to provide better service for majority of your subscribers to which he said he will take this request and discuss within.

Absolutely RUBBISH I must say their support is. I have been trying to reach their Nodal officers at Bangalore and no one is actually picking the phone in the last 3 days! I call atleast 10 times each day at different times and sometimes continuously, still no reply! They deactivated my TS+HD connection on 14th night and promised to FINALLY reactivate on 21st (they didn't have ANY reason for such deactivation other than telling that the HD Gold pack was charged Rs.100 for 2 months and hence the subscription was shortened by 9 days! Even HD Gold pack is deactivated and when I check my account only, no such update is there. So they are certainly BLUFFING about the entire episode!!).

They made me loose the recordings for all the matches in between and even now I could not watch the first quarter final as they did not act on their promise. And we ride them on top of our HEADS!!!

Wait till another Ratan Tata and Nira Radia tape comes out..........Tata Sky is disgusting !! These people will never learn.
