That can be true only for Upscaled movies. Otherwise, I can't understand how someone can make such comment between an upscaled and REAL HD channel with 5.1 surround! Lets not speculate to this extent so quickly.
I agree that some movies on Star Gold, Star Plus and Star Movies are not in Real HD or for that matter real 5.1. They are not even converting 4:3 aspect ratio of the widescreen letter boxed movies before upscaling which is really stupid.
Also, some movies have fake 5.1 just like Discovery HD World and Max HD and I doubt its another example of TS doing their engineering on 2.0 content which might have been received from Star Networks.

I've also been speculating on moving from TS+ to TS HD+. I can't comment on the picture quality but I find just the PVR part worth it.
Have been using Tatasky+ for ~1.5 years. I think i took the plunge when espn/star went off hathway in the middle of the premier league season...
Been really happy with the PVR function of the box... I mainly use it to record the UEFA matches (airing at 12:15/01:15am) and watch them the next day. Also to record some of my fav shows (eg: man vs food
) in series link and catch up on the weekend. Well over time i've almost filled up the 160gb harddrive.
The TS HD+ i understand is 500gb.. so more to be recorded. Then there is HD for key sporting events... & I don't need to change the wiring from TS+... Win-Win all around
I do hope the response on the channel change is better thou.

There is one important point I would like to share between Movies Now and Star Movies HD. There are several SD movies shown in Star Movies when Movies Now is pure HD and have never seen any SD like movie with 4:3 aspect ratio stretched to 16:9 which is very common in Star Movies HD. All movies I have seen in Movies Now are in 16:9 aspect ratio though most are cropped from original 2.35:1. This is rather silly and bad of Star Networks who are much bigger than Times Group and are boosting of their ASLI HD tag!
As per my understanding most of the current movies are shown in 2.35:1 (21:9) aspect ratio in theaters. Since HD standard is 1.85:1 (16:9) most of the movie DVDs used to come in 16:9 by removing some portion in left and right. Even though the picture is full screen we are actually losing a portion of the original movie.
Now-a-days DVDs and BDs are coming in the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (21:9), when we play in a 16:9 TV, there will be black bars on top and bottom.
I have seen this in some movies shown in Star Movies HD channel, I actually like to view in this way than a cropped full screen movie.
For e.g in the Spiderman Triology BD series I have, Spiderman 1 is in 16:9 and Spiderman 2 and 3 are in 21:9, and black bars (top and bottom) are visible for Spiderman 2 & 3. When I upgrade my LCD, I would like to upgrade to a 21:9 LCD TV (like Philips Cinema 21:9 LCD) to view this kind of (21:9) movies in full screen.
I don't know whether the black bars on top and bottom is taken as 4:3 stretched to 16:9.

Its NOT FELT, they are 4:3. One example is "Sixth Sense". There is one 4:3 ratio SD movie properly presented with black bars on the side "Uncertainty". Black bars within the image has nothing to do with the container aspect ratio as per current TV standards which can only be 16:9 or 4:3 with or without vertical or horizontal black bars.
Cropped or uncropped, all the HD channels should always maintain 16:9 aspect ratio with exception of REAL 4:3 content (like those of very old movies) which CAN be presented without any vertical bars on the side (to utilize all available horizontal pixels or vertical rows) as most of the current HDTVs (except for some LGs and Phillips) can change the picture aspect ratio correctly to 4:3 for HD content as well.
If you might have observed, Movies Now has not shown any SD and/or 4:3 aspect ratio content when its quite frequent for Star Movies HD to show 4:3 SD content which is not acceptable especially if it contain wider material (16:9 or 21:9). Atleast for these SD content, should crop from top and bottom to convert to 16:9 before upscaling. Best is NOT to show any SD content at all and such issues wont appear.
When talking of 4:3 or 16:9, I am ONLY talking of PICTURE ASPECT RATIO which has NOTHING to do with what is within the Image (bars or not).
Hope this clarifies this further.
When we see a 21:9 movie in a 16:9 TV there will be black bars on top and bottom, which is not within the image, it is added by the player/TV to display the complete content on the TV without cropping content. Current TVs can be 4:3 or 16:9 or 21:9

I agree with you, that Star TV ought to be embarassed that Movies Now can show all HD movies while they have to resort to a mix of HD and upscaled SD. But the positive with Sat Movies HD is that atleast some of the 2.35:1 movies are shown in their original aspect ratio, whereas with Movies Now, all 2.35:1 movies are cropped (butchered) to fill the 16:9 aspect ratio.

If you have the multi-room connection, you have the option to replace the existing SD box with your spared PVR box without expending a single penny extra. After all the PVR box besides having recording facility is a superior player in terms of connectivity, of video and sound enabling you to get better PQ and SQ.1st post here... I am aware of those Phillips TVs, however when I talked of 16:9 and 4:3, I was ONLY talking of SD and HD broadcasting standard formats, 21:9 aspect ratio is currently available ONLY in BR format or custom resolution (cropped) non standard rips.
I am amazed that you are talking of difference in aspect ratio and still want me to educate how to differentiate INCORRECT aspect ratio. If the image is horizontally or vertically stretched, its incorrect aspect ratio. If it is cropped, its a "converted" aspect ratio. 21:9 content can be presented in BOTH 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio uncropped. Some movies on Star HD channels contain 21:9 uncropped movies in 4:3 aspect ratio which is UNFORGIVABLE as they should crop these sources from top and bottom to reduce the black bars and properly convert to 16:9 before upscaling.
I have already talked on this - CROPPING is DIFFERENT than INCORRECT ASPECT RATIO. A classic example of INCORRECT ASPECT RATIO is Koffee with Karan. Its 16:9 content presented in 4:3 in an HD channel with top and bottom bars! This is MOST UNFORGIVABLE as those bars can easily be cropped to get the original 16:9 (or 21:9) content before upscaling (if they can not find the original source). They are just BLINDLY upscaling every 4:3 source they have even when they have those black bars which SHOULD BE REMOVED to get the original content presented in 16:9. Hope this makes it more clear to you.
Another way of explaining aspect ratio is a 4:3 image can have 4:3 or higher aspect ratio content with black bars on top and bottom (like 16:9, 21:9). A 16:9 image can contain 4:3 with black bars on the sides and 16:9 full screen and 21:9 with top and bottom black bars.
Star Movies, Star Plus, Star Gold are still showing several 4:3 SD content without any conversion even when the content within those 4:3 SD image is 16:9 or higher..
I will try to post some screenshots if my explanation do not help.
Yep, I haven't seen any 21:9 content in Movies Now, however they do not boost of such ASLI HD thing and still show true 16:9 HD movies.
You can not. Its 150GB lost to TVOD which we do not have any control till date. We effectively get only 350GB for PVR features.
Its a great list, however you missed the programming of 16:9 or higher aspect ratio STILL presented (practically without cropping) in 4:3. They should crop the top and bottom black bars before upscaling to atleast present properly in 16:9. There are several such movies in 2.35:1 presented in 4:3 (typically in Star Gold HD) which is utter silliness.

Actually, 'Koffee with Karan' is origianlly shot in 16:9 HD and therefore all Star World needs to do is show the original HD source and thus there would be no black bars to begin with, let alone the need for any cropping of the bars. 'Koffee with Karan' is the biggest example of how technically challenged, the majority of the people in this industry are. It also shows how incompetent people continue to run these companies with no repucerssions whatsoever.
I am not quite sure what it is that you are trying to state. As for my list, I have not missed any category. I have yet to come across a single movie that is presented in the originally correct aspect ratio but in a 4:3 frame. Basically every single movie shown in upscaled SD has been cropped to a narrower aspect ratio. In other words, 2.35:1 movies have been cropped to either 16:9 (1.78:1) or even worse 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio and 1.87:1 movies have been all cropped to 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio. Thus, even if they were to have cropped the black bars before upscaling, the e movies would still not be in the original aspect ratio. Althouhg, it would still be better than the current method of simply horizontally stretching the 4:3 frame to fill the 16:9 frame. But quite honestly, the task of taking the SD masters and then cropping the black bars to get a 16:9 frame before upsclaing is a task that is almost as big as simply creating HD masters from the original film source. It actually would be less work and probably less expensive for Star Movies to source HD masters instead of spending time , effort and money on creating new SD masters that would still end up having an incorrect aspect ratio and would also still only be upscaled SD.
