The Asawari Mark II

Hi all,

I had designed and built a pair of speakers six or seven years ago. It was called the Asawari. I recently finished a version 2.0 of the design. I call it (what else?) the Asawari Mark II.

I am sad that no one can make the Mark II now -- the drivers are no longer available. I hope to build, someday soon, a pair of speakers whose drivers will continue to be available even a year after I finish building.

Are there any pics for us to drool?

Why not use mainstream drivers from Peerless so that they remain available for a long time prolonging design obsolescence?

Why not use mainstream drivers from Peerless so that they remain available for a long time prolonging design obsolescence?

I thought I'll use drivers available locally, and save myself the importing hassle. Then I discovered that if I take five years to finish a pair of speakers, their drivers go out of supply.

Yesterday, I carried them in the rear seat of my car to my friend in Pune who wanted them. They are singing there. :-D This morning, I called him and he admitted he was up till 2AM this morning listening to music.

Am working on another tragic design, the Mark III. Same tweeters as the Mark II, same enclosure in every respect, but Vifa PL18 midbass drivers. Another design which no one can replicate -- even the Vifa drivers are no longer available. Hope to finish the Mark III in a couple of months.

Guys, I need your help and guidance here. I am finding it very hard to use this forum for posting replies.

  I believe replies are moderated, therefore they do not appear online immediately. But I have faced the following problems:
• I write three replies, only two show up even after 24+ hours
• certain threads tell me I can post replies, other threads tell me I can't -- in the same login session, at the same time
• when I am prevented from posting a reply, I am not told why I am blocked

For example, I had replied to hemawaghe's post and two other posts two days ago, but it did not show up. The two other replies showed up in 24 hours.

I tried reading FAQ and forum rules to see if I could get clear guidelines about what is permitted and what is blocked, but could not find any which gave me answers.

Need help here. It's difficult to communicate under these circumstances. Am not complaining about the way this forum is run (it's run very well, IMHO), but am confused about what I should or should not do.

It is so nice to finally hear from you on this forum. I must have read your build article on asawari about a dozen times. Very well written by a true DIYer.

All the very best on your latest project as well. Please also be more active on this forum!

Moderators can comment better but IIRC, you need to make a minimum number of posts before they will get posted automatically without mod approval. Perhaps the mods missed one of your replies?? Personally, I have never faced an issue of posts dissapearing.

One last thing - you chose such a nice name for your speakers! I was half expecting you to choose other raaga names for your subsequent models.

Have heard about Asawari from FMs and various forums. Nice to read what goes on behind speaker building. Very nice build tcpip. An audiophile hobbyist in truest sense.

Off topic : Yes in the past my three posts also did not come up or probably were deleted. One was comedy movies post. The thread itself has vanished. Other was a post in cable thread. And third one was capacitor sale thread. (Which I reposted) I am perfectly OK with that, but a single line of what mistake the member is doing will help immensely.

I have chosen only raaga names for my speakers. I started with Asawari, then did something called Bhoopali (3-way sat-sub, under construction) and then the Darbari (I missed the letter C in between, will come back and fill the gap someday).

I chose to use Mark II and Mark III to indicate to readers that I don't claim they are new designs -- they are close cousins.

How much did the asawari I(and II) cost you ? I see figures of 70k from the discussion forum . Is this the final price ?

The Mark I was done in 2005-2006, and cost me about Rs.42K, IIRC. The Mark II enclosure was done in 2008, crossover was made in 2013. If I re-make the Mark II today, the price will probably be Rs.65,000 or so, very roughly. (Am not very clear about mapping the quantities of MDF/ply for this enclosure with the prices of today.)

Part of the price increase from Mark I to Mark II was because I shifted from 20mm marine ply to 25mm MDF and from melamine polish to PU. And the price increase from Mark II of 2008 to today will be due to inflation at all levels: labour costs, cost of ply and MDF, increase in prices of coils (copper)...

These are indicative prices. If you build the Asawari Mark II and replace my veneer + PU polish with laminate sheets, you will get identical sound at a lower price.

Could you please help in clarfiying my doubts... i am looking for a speaker system for my TV (movies) and listening songs from mobile with them.
Looking at the fourms, thinking of high efficiency fullrange speakers in stereo. Some say that their bass will be less but in recomended back loaded horn enclosers will enhance bass response. As it will be simpler and no corssover involved. Seen fostex drivers getting good feedback and also they provide encloser designes so thinking of them to get imported or get if any friend is coming from us. And then build the enclosers here.

I went through some articles in your site, how was your experience with your first full range speakers from jordan? Is it ok to go for high efficiency (around 92db) full range speakers or do i need to think of 2way or 3way system?
If 2way or 3way, will it be better to use locally available drivers in india as getting more number of drivers from outside would be more costly?
