Tips on starting commercial movie theater.

Hello all,

i was trying to get some information on starting a movie theater in India ,its not multiplex just normal theater for small city .its one of the my future business plan am trying to gather all information prior to decide any business investment.


i greatly appreciate any inputs from senior members and anyone who came across same kind of projects or information.

I would like to know total equipment cost ,equipments required ,business plan ,things to survey once the location is selected.and theater construction,sound system.

if you have any information available online please share the links.
i tried to Google it,i couldn't get much information.

Its little early to decide first i would like get costing then will be able to decide.this will be worth investing or not.

deciding the components to be used completely depends on the budget..

from the budget... things needs to be decided... are..

space

interiors

seating

audio and video equipments..

emergency procedures..

disaster management...

so if you have a costing and upper limit for the future plan..

then the allocation of the audio and video components can decide what kind of equipments you can go for.. also a commercial dealer can help with the models and make as the amps and speakers used are all together diffrent...

Is a theatre viable today with streaming / cable / home theatre options available and plus the investment will be in crores. Isnt it better to look in these avenues ?

my budget is small like max 50 laks for all the components except land and civil construction as its for small city even mini theater will be enough may be 200 to 250 seat capacity.

Sunil,

Already screens are not able to sustain, they take some franchisee to renovate or rebuild, and also selling it to big multiplex operators.

Today, a day after movie release we get the pirated copies and moreover in small towns people are not bothered about quality so there is more piracy .
in small towns.

Apart from the land cost, the construction and equipment cost will be same in big or small town. But the returns are very small.

I'm just curious... Someone told me that the DLP projector at Urvashi in B'lore is about 6 lakhs. That qualty of that projector is AMAZING!

Can they really be that cheap?

6 lakhs????????:lol:

It is a 4K digital projector, which is more than a crore.
DLP is a technology from Texas Instruments, actual projector could be Christie or Barco make.

A dts sound system costs around 15 lakhs. You can go for something like Qube for lesser price. Even the construction cost is quite high. You also require a large amount of land around the theatre for safety reasons.

DTS is a sound processer and Qube is a server to broadcast.
Insted of DTS you can go for Dolby. Most of the owners goes for both.

Spot on! The bulb alone will cost more than 3L.

The general consensus is that single-screen theaters are on their way out but Urvashi is still the best 3D experience in Bangalore.

FYI Urvashi is using 2 projectors for the 3D along with xpand technology glasses. Thats why it looks so damn good in 3D.

secondly, the data is wrong that single halls are not doing well. if we go by latest bollywood data then, single theaters are giving in more then 40% revenue. these are for movies like: Don2, Ready, Bodyguard, etc.

there has not been a major downfall in single theaters.

As per your requirement 4 screens multiplex with the capacity of around 600 seats would cost you nearly 3 to 3.5 Cr including construction but price always vary as per the quality work, it may go down to 2.5 also depending upon your choice and budget. We need to do complete analysis of your area then only able to comment on occupancy but in general it moves around 20% on month basis. You will have to get permission for construction on that particular land then get your architectural concept approved by DC. After approval deposit compounding fees and start your construction and the lisioning process will follow you till the opening of cinema. Many departments are involved to set up a multiplex, only expert will guide you in the process.
