Unconventional Audio Designs!

This is a fun thread! :)

Here’s the undisputed champion of unconventional audio design: the B&W Nautilus. Also takes top honours in the ‘Ugliest Speaker Ever’ Awards, winner of the ‘You Paid How Much For This Crap??’ Trophy and voted ‘Speaker Most Likely To Get You A Divorce’ since the day it was introduced.

Sharp - VZ-3500 - Stereo set, Both sides LP play

State-of-the-art microcomputers and infrared optoelectronic technology have made possible this advanced player which can continuously play both record sides, randomly play either side or repeatedly play one or both sides.

These features are realised by employing 2 separate linear tracking tonearms. The result is that the record itself need never be touched; the soft-touch buttons control all functions.

Thanks to the vertically designed player, the VZ-3000E is slim and elegant, perfectly suited for any room. In addition, floor vibration and acoustic feedback are reduced.

Just my opinion - exactly opposite view from me. I hate this speaker - after i listen to them for 20 minutes in what hifi show 5 years ago

Sony Linkbuds WF-L900 (2022)

The Linkbuds WF-L900 do not have built-in touch controls, either. Instead, the earbuds will respond to taps made on the front of your ear. Presumably, Sony has integrated motion sensors to detect these taps.

Bang & Olufsen - BEOLAB 90 ($146,300)

With no less than 8,200 watts per speaker, 18 premium drivers, 14 channels of ICEpower, 300 watts amplifiers and 4 channels of 1000 watts class D Heliox amplifiers.

The Beolab 90 is designed to take readings of a room using a special microphone — sort of similar to the way an A/V receiver’s auto-setup works — and employ what it knows about what happens to the sound in the room to make virtually anything you want to happen. Perhaps the most impressive part of the processing is its ability to deal with reflected sound (sounds that come at you after they bounce off the walls, a leading cause of degraded fidelity). Rather than try to squash some of those sounds using equalisation, Bang & Olufsen uses active noise cancellation to effectively eliminate the reflected sound where the listener sits. Think about that for a second. The speaker itself becomes an active noise-cancelling system so that the sound it does produce arrives at your ear in perfect purity. The system can also use its processing abilities to put the sweet spot anywhere within the room. Let’s say your favourite chair is well left of centre but you want to feel like the soundstage is right in front of you; the Beolab 90 system can achieve that for you.

Pre-war Philips portable record player

Sounded pretty nice actually with old radios especially, also had a unique way for starting up the platter :)

One more. Although it is not in the league of other jaw-dropping classics in this great thread, this product stands out as it was actually available in India; IIRC made by BPL-Sanyo. The Sanyo quad-speaker boombox, single cassette variant. Early 1980s.maxresdefault.jpg
