Here is a product im sure most of you vinyl heads know about
wondering if you guys hav used something like this

The Universal RSR: Lp Stabilizer Disc Ring Outer Record Periphery Clamp, Warped Records, Damping, Resonance, Realistic Sound Reproduction.

I found it interesting- so with the encouragement and support of a fellow member here(mahiruha - credit to him for all the links in this post too) i have taken up this project

currently i will be replicating the ring
Not just using the same alloy but also the same manufacturing process
(Grinding to maintain flatness and tolerance 0.05mm , Plasma Jet Cutting , CNC counterbore Mill)

be aware that the weight and tolerances play a good role

The ring is almost ready
Will tackle the centering disc now ( which is not important , just makes things simpler for the lazies )

what is the difference between one made by magma and asked by sachu?
Edit: ok one is a ring on periphery, another is clamp in the center. Magma, what about making both as a combo? I will buy one for sure. But, will my TT be able to take that much extra load?

Interested in the stab. ring, a sneak preview with a listening impressions from Mumbai members will be welcome.

BTW what will be the cost?, a minimum order qty may also be thought of if that helps you to commercialise the same.

Just my thoughts, since a lot of people are getting Vinylized of late.

actaully/ideally both components are to be used in conjunction

thanks for your effort to make this record stabilizing ring a reality in India. Good job and I just can't wait to hear it. I hope it will take my vinyl experience to a new level.

@Others: The reason I wanted to have this record stabilizing ring is in most of the cases be it new or old the records are warped unless they are 200 Gms. In these cases record surface doesn't sit properly on the platter so when we play those records the contribution the platter can make in the sound is minimized to a great extent. To overcome this issue I wanted to have this ring and it is also reported that it even makes good deal of difference to playback of records which are not warped which I guess is due to the improved coupling.
 
@magma: I will take both - ring and clamp. Much, much needed stuff!

Outer ring + clamp can be a very good and is a must product as mentioned for warped records and damping resonance. I have crudely experimented with it. SQ difference is very much noticeable in even low end Turntables. Will need good TT (good Torque and pitch control) and record's center hole should be precise*. Would be good if made compatible with most of the TT platters.

* nakamichi Turntable had a system of selfcentering the off center records. Nakamichi TX-1000 on thevintageknob.org :licklips:

Seeing Magmas Speaker stands one can be sure of quality and finishing of his work. :)

But there are two kinds of so called clamps ( i know of with my very limited knowledge)
(Vinyl heads please elaborate if this is correct)

One is basicaly just a counter weight that locates onto the spindle and couples the record , damping it and counterbalancing the ring.This is the kind of weight shown in the You tube video in the very first post

the other kind is an actual clamp that has been posted in the second post by a fellow member
This has a spring steel collet that clamps onto the spindle i assume
the outer body is delrin.there are some adjustments i cant understand yet though

the first kind of clamp can be made at reasonable costs and that would be my next project if someone shows serious intrest like mahi

the secong kind of clamp requires differnt manufacturing process and is not viable for me to make
You will probably be paying the same to me as you would if you import a ready made one

Anyway i need some vinyly heads to share more gyan about this central clamp
If someone already has one and is willing to lend it to me- things become Super SIMPLE for me

I'd prefer this sort of design, one that does not lock on to the central spindle. For one thing, you don't have to stop/start the motor for every change of LP. With belt drive TTs, it is advisable to stop the motor each time around, to avoid belt slippage and possible impact on the suspension, but with idler wheel and direct drive you can keep the motor spinning for the duration of the session, and lift off the LP (and, before that, the clamp) with a sure hand.

Certain belt drives that have a light suspension (like the Linn LP12) cannot take a reasonably heavy clamp, as the suspension setting would get disturbed. And a clamp has to be reasonably heavy to make an impact.

Clamps have two functions: one, to reduce slippage of the LP relative to the platter mat, caused by stylus friction with the groove, and two, to absorb/dissipate vibrations from the motor. A more solid presentation, firmer bass response is the result, but only if the match of clamp to platter mass and platter mat (rubber/cork/felt) results in the right form of synergy. It's a trial and error sort of thing.

That said, Magma, I'd still be interested in a clamp if you could fabricate one on the lines of the design above, or something similar.

i too agree with you about the prference for this form of clamp over the colle based design

however thanks to the links you and sachu 88 ent me , i got in contact with a member from another forum
He is quite helpful and i got his schematics of the collet design

maybe ill try that design too when i have some free time

This one looks really, really simple. magma should be able to fabricate it in his sleep:lol:
Of course I just realised that it may not work at all on my suspended Thorens TD 160.

No lathe job will make this ring correctly
remember the ring is only 3mm thick with a counterbore of only 0.3mm
Lathes will warp this - there is no way flatness will be maintained which would be crucial in this case
The original manufactures too use no lathes and use only plasma jet cutting coupled with CNC vertical Mill (as i have done)
