Actually i have got only a pair of Wharf 9.2 BS (used in a stereo setup) and it was confirmed that it's not good idea to use the speakers from my Sony HTIB with Yamaha due to impedance mismatch.

I'm yet to buy additional speakers for Center, Surround and an active Sub.
Until then still i would like to use the AVR with two channels.
I think i should choose, Stereo mode in AVR when i play movie or i should choose 2 channel audio from DVD.

What is the best way to make use of AVR and Speakers in 2 channel mode?

Let the AVR select the mode as it has better preamp than DVDp.
Get Wharf centre early as if 9series is discontinued ,it may not be available.

I prefer 2 ch stereo in my Yamaha (Rxv459), but try different modes and see what works best for you. Also, if your DVD has optical or digitial coax use that instead of analog out and check for the difference in sound quality, I saw a significant improvement.
