Any feedback on how good is impact 10 for music? and for movies? What Hi fi reviews suggest they lose control at high intensity scenes? is this true?

Also is Impact 12 much better than 10 interms of agility and performance?

Impact 10 can move enough air to slam you back on your seat during movies.
Its quite fast and tight. No distortion even at high volumes. For music, you need to do a good frequency matching with your main speakers for a good blend.

For its price, I do not have any complaints (though I have not heard it during "fearsome" scenes ).

And yes, 12" is better than 10" for the impact. Its simple physics actually.
But wait, 10 may be faster than 12, given its compact size?
I don't know for sure. I haven't compared them.

Go for any of the two, based on your budget and real estate.

Thanks Santy. How do you match frequency of subwoofers. Also did you find impact boomy?

It depends on the speakers you have for the fronts and its frequency repsonse. If they are floorstanders, they could handle low frequencies quite well.
There should not be a huge overlap in the frequency curve of the sub and the FS. A 10% is ideal, according to me though I am not an expert in this.

After extensive listening, we can understand which frequencies (for eg. 80 to 110 hz) are over-pronounced because of both speakers.
Accordingly the crossover settings on the sub/ avr can be tuned to our liking. And yes auto calibration on AVR helps to a good extent but I believe our ears are the best sensors.

I do not believe that Velo impact is boomy- its quite tight. It also depends on the IC used. Should be of decent quality. And ofcourse the placement within the room also matters.

What should be the normal crossover frequency for sub if using floor standers?

There are 2 suggestions, try both the settings and decide based on your taste.

1. Audyssey recommend to set it at 80Hz even if your floor stander can go down upto 30Hz. Same time you need to set up speaker as "small".

OR

2. A clean 10 db above your floor standers lower frequency .
ie, If your FS have lower freq 40 Hz then set crossover frequency to 50 Hz

Have MA Rx6 Floor standers which have decent low end. In that case do we need to still set it at 80Hz

How do the Impact 12 and CHt-8Q compare in terms of the shuddering bass department.. Considering for a 200sq feet area... which one should be opted with Floorstanders

Yes, You must set the speaker to "small" and cross over to 80Hz. Detailed information on this topic is available in this blog by Audysssey

"Here is a better rule: All speakers are Small. In todays complicated AVR lingo that just means: If you have a subwoofer you should always turn bass management on. Always. Even if your receiver clings to the past and automatically sets your speakers to Large."

It depends. For music, you may wish to use the sub only for those frequencies which the FS is weak in, if at all you like sub for music. This gives a good blend. I keep it at 50 hz if I listen to music on AVR. If you do not like sub for music, then its well and good. The FS should take care of your music requirement.

For movies, it is better to keep close to 80 hz. In movies with discrete 5.1 / 7.1 surround, the mixing is not simply done by taking out the low frequencies out of all channels and shoving them into the LFE channel like many people believe. The sound engineers add certain bass effects exclusively for sub which they may not add in fronts. Such effects may be even 120 hz.

So ideally, you need to keep at 80hz even if your FS can handle those frequencies. As other members said, to avoid FS taking low frequencies leading to over pronounced bass, you can set speakers to small on AVR. It may appear to be an insult to the floorstanders but the overall blend will be good and low-mids will be smooth and distortion free since the load on front speakers is less.

My Polk DSW 660 is very good for Music but so so for movies. It can produce beats in very quick succession without any boomy effect in music.

See my speaker specification and suggest the crossover frequency
(As per your suggestion it should be 60....still...)

velodyne CHT8Q vs Impact 10 - Which is better? Also Impact 10 does not have a separate switch off on switch. Does it matter?
