Hi All,

My Velodyne VX 10 was rattling for sometime, when i checked it today, i noticed that the VX 10 Cone is damaged somehow. It is actually torn.

I am looking for either replacing the cone or going infor a new sub.

Do you guys have any suggestion for 10" Sub Woofer Component ? OR any recommendations to go along with Monitor Audio RX2 + RX Centers driven by Onky0 RC 270.

Thanks
Prasanna KV

Find someone dealing in professional audio (DJ Equipment) in your area.

Cone replacement shall cost around Rs. 300

A new 10" driver shall be around Rs. 1000 max but do compare the weight and size of the magnet with your present driver.

Hi Ketan,

Thanks for response. Can just the cone be placed ? !! I am surprised. I thouhgt if the cone is damaged the entire Driver needs to be replaced.

Would it sound good after the cone is replaced ?

cheers

That's scary. On a side topic, how old is the sub? I'm looking at Velodyne models myself, and if there are quality issues, I'd certainly like to know. Do let us know the cost of the repairs also.
Thanks!

It is almost 5 yearsold. I bought it in 2008 Jan. I dont think u shd be concerned abt quality it was too good until it got damaged.

I checked with Velodyne support. They said they can send the replacement driver for $60 + shipping. I am checking with them if they would be able to ship it to india directly or to some address in US and have my friends pick them and bring it back here.

I have also mailed to Sunny, Delhi based velodyne distributor. Hpoing to hear from him as well..

Other option i have zeroed in P-Audio 10" 10-300MB Driver. Based on what i read it seems to be good. OFcourse i dont know if it matches the VX 10 AMP / Box ..

any suggestions or idea on how this can be cheked would be helpful.

Yes,cone can be replaced. But may not perform similarly.TS parameters of new con/driver may vary.So the Bass quality. Also voice coil specifications may change. So ask for technical details of new cone & coil.

Well if cone only has been damaged and voice coil is in-tact, you can go to any professional re-coners and get it re-coned within 200-300Rs. After which you can validate the SQ. Based on the cone material there might be change in SQ. So ask them to use the same cone material as the original one.

cheers,
Vince.

Unless highly skilled, the re-coning is done with new voice coil & not old one.

The cone can be changed without changing the voice coil n call. Have got it done 2 times myself.

You will be able to find the same cone I guess as the cones are imported. Wont make much of a difference, I think it will be wise to get it re coned first and check rather than getting the new driver straight away.

You can also go for locally made drivers the same dj store might be able to provide you the driver. It may even sound better.

Spiro, that's the reason I told that this has to be done by a professional. Also going for a new coil will surely change the electrical and sonic characteristics of the sub.

Thanks a lot for response. Things got little hectic at work. Checked with Acoustic Arts in Delhi for replacement driver, VX-10 is discontinued so they don't have any driver.

Checked with Velodyne support. The Driver is $60. Shipping to India is $80 :) . Shipping to US is $20.

Net Net,
Driver + Shipping To India shall $140 and
Driver + Shipping to Us shall be $80.

As of now considering three options in the same order
1. Try reconing shops ...I spoke with Mr Muthu from Power Electronic Industries. He said it may take 1500+ for reconing ..He has asked me to bring the entire sub for checking after reconing. These guys were recommended by one another member in the forum. (Some Ali in Ritchie Street as referred by Rajagopal fromthe forum) ( Any other recommended guys) Not Sure if you Chennai guys have heard of lalwani enterprises ..or other reconing guys ?
2. Try P Audio Driver SN10-300MB
3. Sell off the VX 10 (if i can find a buyer for subwoofer with the damaged cone) and buy another sub like Astonia

As of now i am not sure how reliable/ safe would the driver be in package when shipped to India and have a risk of fitting it without damaging the cone again !!

Btw how long would it take to re Cone and any recommended shops that you have experience working with ?

Its not clear whether you are getting the cone shipped or the driver shipped?

1st try the reconing shops I think they will have a suitable cone for you. Spending Rs. 300 wont harm. If that doesnt work (which I am sure will work) get the driver imported and you may be able to change it yourself.

How much will you send the old sub for? in case you decide to sell it

If all the three option i stated are not working out, then I am planning to get the entire Vx10 Driver from Velodyne for $140.

Yeah i am going to try the reconing guys, but guy i spoke seem to charge 1200 or 1500 :( Few of the forum members have recommended him in a different thread.

I am not sure of the right price for sub with damaged cone ..may be 10-12 K..

Take out the driver send it to delhi Ill get it reconed and send it back to you, you pay for the shiping. If possible post the pics of the cone here.

Thanks a lot Ketan for the generous offer:)

I would try visiting the shops tomorrow if not on saturday and It is not working out, I shall send the driver to Delhi.

I am curious on the reason to send it to Delhi, Is it because Delhi has good reconing guys or just to save some money..

I have uploaded the picture as well.

There are number of good reconing guys here I have got some woofers reconed myself plus the money charged is also less I dont know why you are being asked for Rs. 1200.

There are a lot of manufacturers here as well. They manufacture professional speakers but the technology is same in all speakers.

Here is a link to one very near to my house www.aplusaudios.com

Based on Rajagopal and Rajiv suggestion, I have given the VX 10 Subwoofer itself to Mr Sayeed with Philips Arena for checking what can be done. He said he shall let me know in couple of days time.

Mr. Sayeed is the forum member too and he has been to HFV meets in Chennai. I guess I need to make sure I will be part of HFV meet next time. I guess i was missing all the fun.

Do anyone know when the next Chennai meet is going to be ?

Ketan,
Thanks for all your help. I shall keep you posted. In case if it is not working, i shall let you.

[FIXED] Velodyne VX 10 Cone Damaged

Hi All,

Mr Sayeed has fixed the damage to the cone. It is sounding very good now. I didn't hear any difference while watching movies. Saw three movies back to back (with lot of action in it and low bass), Sub did not hear a rattle. :yahoo: I just played it at 25% of sub volume. Btw it just costed Rs 900 for the fix.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I dont have to give away the box after all :)

Special Thanks to Rajiv and Rajagopal for suggesting Mr Sayeed.

Cheers
