Videocon D2H HD No 5.1 Sound

I have Videocon D2h normal HD box(model 2222). I am now planning to purchase the 5.1 speakers to get the 5.1 Dolby Digital HD surround sound.

Please advise which speaker model I can purchase for this purpose. My budget is around 6k.

Do you already have an AVR / HTiB? If you don't and want 5.1 audio you will have to get one since DD 5.1 output from the 2222 STB is either via Coaxial Digital out and/or HDMI. In either of these cases you will need an AVR/HTiB which usually will already have 5.1 speakers connected.

To drive speakers directly from the 2222 STB, you will have to rely on the Analog out from the STB to L/R speakers (this will probably be very low volume if it at all succeeds and will definitely not give you DD 5.1).

With a 6K budget you can consider a 2.1 speaker setup (L+R speakers and a powered subwoofer) or a soundbar instead of 5.1. Altec Lansing, Creative, Edifier, JBL(soundbar) are the usual suspects.

6K !! Really!! Unfortunately not enough. U definitely have to increase your budget.

In order of preference of highest to lowest quality, below are the cheapest possible ways to get 5.1 out of any HD STB :-

1) AVR + 5.1 speakers. Onkyo/Denon/Pioneer/Yamaha HTIB packages start from ~INR21K-30K
2) Logitech Model Z906 5.1 speakers which has got Digital Optical and Coaxial inputs to connect from digital output of STB. ~INR20K
3) Philips/LG/Samsung DVD/BD HTIB package (which includes inbuilt DVD/BD player) with digital optical/coaxial input at back. ~INR12K-30K
4) Any local/china brand 5.1 speakers (~INR3K-7K) + Local/china Digital optical/coaxial to 5.1 analog decoder/converter (~INR5K-6K). Total ~INR8K-13K
5) (Absolutely not recommended unless on a really really tight budget) - Any 5.1 speakers with the option of pro logic /pro logic II. This will take analog L R input from STB and convert by its own algorithm to fake 5.1 channels.

The decoder/converter mentioned in 4th option above is with me and i intend to sell mine for ~INR 3K. I have never used it. Just in case anyone's interested.

I have the old STB , the black one . Recently got myself a yamaha yht196 for the bedroom setup .I think there is no 5.1 support on it via HDMI . What should i do to get the new white STB , how much do they charge ?

Thanks htfan17 for listing the alternatives. It will be helpfull. Will the Logitech speakers give the true 5.1 digital surround sound? I want to explore more on option 2 & 3. Option 1 seems to be bit expensive. :(

Thanks jsmithe, maybe in the interim, I have to go in for 2.1 speakers.

But what I am not getting is then why are there 5.1 speakers which does not give the kind of surround sound effect for which people the buy them? Are they worthless?

^^. The low cost 5.1 speaker systems are useful only if the player has 5.1 analog output. There is no analog 5.1 channel outputs in STB, instead 5.1 sound is provided through optical/coaxial or hdmi out. So you need a speaker system with optical/coaxial or hdmi inputs which are obviously expensive.

ok thanks for clearing the doubt. Can someone please suggest the good by reasonable priced HTIB model number which has speakers that can give 5.1 dobby hd surround sound and as the connectivity option as required for the TV and settop box ( as per the point 3 of htfan17)

for just tv use just get any local amp..and local BS pair..
or 6k astonia amp and branded 10k/12k bs pair
will be satisfactory even for large rooms and high sold vol

however for a mixed use yama 196 is better choice..(NOT for large room)

You are Welcome moday. Btw, clicking on thank button is sufficient . No need to mention it.

To answer your first question, yes Logitech's one and only model Z906 has a coaxial as well as optical input which will connect to your STB and give you true 5.1 surround output.

To answer your second question, the cheaper and local 5.1 speakers in the market are all capable of providing true 5.1 But they are not made for cable box/ STB usage. Their primary usage is limited to PC /Laptop 5.1 sound card and / or the 5.1 analog plugs found at the back of every standalone dvd player today. When connected to either of these, any 5.1 speaker no matter how cheap will give u the true surround sound. The only thing that will differ is the quality of sound itself because of the speaker brand/ build quality.

The Logitech Z906 and Yamaha HT system are on borderline pricing between 19-21K. So u may choose either one as per your need. I wud say go for Yamaha as its more flexible and also has HDMI inputs to take from STB. IN logitech, u will be limited to use the provided speakers and the cable lengths are limited. But in systems like Yamaha/Onkyo/Denon/Pioneer, in future, u can buy and use high end speakers of different brands and use as long independent cable as u want. Though logitech is the most powerful and recomended 5.1 speaker set of its category (compared against iball, Intex, F&D, moserbaer, Creative etc), all that flexibility of Yamaha isn't possible with it.

To answer your further question, I searched a bit on official websites for latest models and here is list of DVD/BD HTIBs having Optical Inputs at the back. Sorry I cudnt go through alll. The website prices are all MRPs so most probably they are all cheaper in showrooms. So please call the showrooms and check for latest prices. The only feature u r looking for is whether it has got Optical input.

a few models on quick search:
Sony DAV-DZ350
Sony BDV-E3100
Philips HTD3510G/94

Disagree with your first part. amp + BS will obviously NOT serve his objective. Moday is looking for true 5.1 surround from HD STB channels.

After having long follow-up with videocon team, finally they have replaced my old HD settop box with the new black one ( download id:36). So, I'm getting that recording options(not tried yet) and DD thru HDMI as well. Hence, disconnected the digital co-ax and started getting both AV from HDMI only. Seems few options are different as Home Cinema changed as Surround and AUTO option is also there ( I think it will get switched to respective format by itself). But I really feels that surround effect is not as good as the old settop box connected by co-axial. Any suggestions?

Hi Guys,

I bought d2h platinum HD package on august.
After so many review & discussion for 5.1 Dolby digital output from my HD2222 box I called customer care they replied 5.1 available only through spdif. s i bought coaxial to optical for my samsung ht having optical in but still unable to get 5.1.
After many call logs techinical head of our area visited he uograded the box to latest firmware.
What surprise is i am getting 5.1 (for available dolby chanels like star plus & few) output on HDMI & stereo for others.
I can conclude that customer care people dont know the field picture but the fact is that I am able to receive 5.1 Dolby digital (Auto mode in box) Throught HDMI only.

My connection are as per below

STB---HDMI---> HDMI in of my samsung blu ray player & HDMI OUT-----HDMI----->to TV HDMI IN

STB config. AUto (whenever dd is there it will catch it otherwise stereo)
DD is superb just like blu ray disc is playing for channels like English movie Star movies HD, Zee Studio HD, Movies Now HD, Mtunes HD.

Thanks all for your posts & knowledge sharing.

This is my 1st post here and i m quite a novice into AV set up.
I have STB2222. Can some one put a pic of spdif cable that we need to connect d2h box to home theater?

Thanks in advance!

Just got the Videocon DTH installed and i have got a back STB HD box, the installation guy said the white box is not coming and currently this is the new one which is coming.

The no on the box reads STB NO: SDHD-555 . Is anyone else using the same, is it a good box. I googled it up but unable to find any info on the same. Compared to my TS HD box this one is very small in size.
