Any forum members using Onkyo 875?
Need your inputs.
I used to have a Onkyo 503 earlier which was later upgraded to the 875. Volume levels of 20-25 used to be sufficient on the 503 however on the 875 i have to crank it up to 45 or even higher for normal tv(Cable) viewing
I tried the Audessy set up. Did not work well. hence have resorted to manual set up.
What might be the issue here? Is there something amiss here

Also what volume do you generally use while watching 'movies'. Like let say 60% or 70%.

This depends upon a number of things:

1. The relative range that the AVR uses for measuring volume. They need not be the same for all AVRs.
2. Impedance and power capabilities of the speakers.
3. The gain that the AVR is getting from your source - in your case the set top box.
4. Your distance from the speakers.

Try the following:

1. Increase the 'volume' in your set top box to max.
2. Set your 875 to absolute volume codes. In that mode I usually use anywhere between 55-65 to get a SPL of about 65-70dB, some 10 feet away.

Remember even when you are using a DVD or Blu-Ray, the gain for each media could be different.

Cheers

Try bumping up the volume for each individual speaker via the AVR. I typically keep the centre speaker channel on maximum as I can hear the dialouges clearly as certain western actors tend to mumble a lot when a crucial dialouge is delivered.

I also keep the subtitles on as I can understand what they mumble :)
