Hi group.
I have been following the discussions in this section of the forum for the past few days.

I want to buy the Tecsun PL-660 receiver for my personal use. I have been looking around in South Mumbai.

The shopkeepers are very ignorant and its difficult to explain to them what I am wanting. I guess there must be some niche sellers who would know about radios and models like this. Normal audio sellers don't know and don't want to know about SW receivers.

I have seen the internet prices. The standard price is around 120 USD plus 35 USD of postage. But the Indian Ebay lists it at 13500.

If anyone knows where these receivers are available in Mumbai then please do let me know. Otherwise if you can point me to a few places where I can enquire, it would help me to search.

best wishes,
Jawed Ahmed

Yes, Javed its very difficult to find this kind of Short Wave Radio in India. You can do one thing- just spend some time on ebay US Web site . You will find a lot of stuff like this available. But I have never purchased any item from ebay US. So I can not assure you, but I have seen many people who have bought some very good items from Ebay. And you will need a Pay Pal account for this.
I wish you may find your dream radio soon.

Best Bet would be to get it from someone who is traveling back from US or ask someone to ship it to you from there. You wont get cheaper here if you are looking for particular model only.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I am continuing my search in Mumbai.

I am also asking my friends if someone can carry it back from US.

I looked at the HK Ebay site. The price no doubt is competitive. Only concern is the customs at Indian end. Don't know much about it. Will keep it as the last resort.

I have also seen the links to the other posts given by Forum Members, but frankly 18k is a bit out of my budget.

regards and best wishes,

You can not officially import radio devices from abroad into India without a telecom or wireless license. I had the same problem when I wanted to import the specialist radio. The vendor said it is not possible to send to India. So, better check up with customs before really ordering from abroad

@hifijay: thanks for sharing this info.

The problem with Customs(at least here in Mumbai) is that they are not very consistent. And a lot of things depend on their(person on duty at that time) interpretation of how they will apply the duties. They take particular delight in assessing such "enthusiast/individually imported" items. And heaven forbid if they classify it as a Wireless/Radio device rather than a Simple Radio Receiver. Then it will go into the loop of additional documents/approvals. Simply not worth saving 30-40 USD.

Plus, its difficult to go by past instances too. For the same item, you can get by twice without paying anything and next time be charged 15%. or 25%.

I have (somehow) succeeded in cajoling an acquaintance to bring back the radio for me from US. Hopefully I will get it soon.

good day to all.

Re: want to buy radio in Mumbai: Got it !

Dear Friends,
I finally got the Tecsun PL-660 radio.

I purchased it from the link shared by Reubensm...Thans Reubensm !

It came to 114 USD with Shipping. I had to pay another 1k for Customs in Mumbai.
Sharing a few pics. The device, no doubt is excellent. The build quality is good, its strong and heavy. The sound quality from the in built speaker is not so good. But that was not expected in the first place from such a small enclosure. On headphones is great ! It latches on even to weak signals and noise is within control. Short wave works well only with the external aerial.

But I have to switch off the CFLs, Tube-lights and phone chargers when using this radio...otherwise there is a irritating noise.

sharing a few pics.

Congrats on the buy. Its feels great and nostalgic to note your interest in radio listening. Yes, the airwaves these days, are clogged with interference.

Bumping this thread as I could not locate a similar one re. my request for advice, which is as follows :

I wish to purchase a simple to operate radio receiver - with FM, MW and if possible SW reception too. This has to be a. light & portable, b. easy to operate (for a senior citizen) & not least c. with very good reception (noise cancelling ability).

Can anyone guide me as to where I can buy? I am in Bombay.

Lamington Road? I was thinking about buying a new one, from the usual suspects - Sony et. al. I know that Philips has stopped its audio business but what about Sony, National/Panasonic/Technics and so on.
Any other brands?

@ issigonis

Buy online as I did not find this sony in many Sony stores - least I checked 4 stores

selection of radios on flipkart

http://www.flipkart.com/computers/a...fm-radio/pr?sid=6bo,ord,rlj,idz#jumpTo=385|20

also philips still make radios -earlier a philips fanboy of late I had very bad expereince with that brand so I avoided philips
BTW there is a shop in opera house - where repairman Pandurang sits - sell philips radios - Pandurang even repairs radios. If reqd I will give you his cell no

I understand you often visit international locations - if you want to spend substancial amount you might get a stereo FM - am radio , maybe wi-fi radio thrown in - however SW may be a NO option

This sony is STERO , Manual tuning , small and has audio INPUT so that you can use with cellphones etc
