Hi All,

Recently bought Yamaha RXV-473 and connected the speakers of my old HTIB (Sony GNZ9D) to it except sub as it's passive one.

I want to convert the same subwoofer of my pld HTIB to Powered one. Please help me how can i do that?

From where to purchase the sub woofer amplifier kit and how to make connections etc.

Please suggest me.

I would suggest you not to touch the sub cabinet and rather buy a mono amp and power the sub. Better borrow an amp from friend and connect it -
AVR sub out --> Amp Aux in --> Amp speaker --> subwoofer
See if you like the effect, then go for a mono amp with similar connection.

You can use a plate amp(link below) but without properly checking the subwoofer's cabinet it is not advisable to add it in the subwoofer's cabinet. Rather make a cabinet for the amp and connect it externally. Also, it better you use a plate amp as you will get controls related to Subwoofer like crossover frequency, phase etc.

Even I was also thinking the same that I should not be touching the cabinet, instead I get a plate to mount the amp and then attach it to the sub.

Now one more problem. I have a sub which has two connections.

Firstly it is to get LFE frequencies like red and black, perhaps to connect the speakers of the woofer.

Second connection also goes into my Sony GNZ9D, perhaps to power the LED present in sub and it's on off switch button.

So I think I just need to connect the speaker cable into the amp and don't need to connect the LED cable. Or do you think I should put the front and back pics of my sub here for better understanding?

Yes, please do that. Put some pics here if you are not sure how to connect it. Also try to connect it to any speaker out of the AVR to see if it is working without the 2nd chord and the off/on switch.

I connected the sub to Front R and sub started working so quite evident that another cable is meant for powering LED and on/off switch.

Now please guide me which mono amp can I go for?what price?

The amp kit mentioned by you is costing around 8K, I think putting another 3-4K you get a new powered sub. I roamed in the electrical market here in chandigarh but none knows how to power it using mono amp. Neither they are aware about amp kit.

any other cheaper kit?

Me too looking for cheaper kit as 8k seems to be too much. As I mentioned that in around 12-13K you get new powered subs of Polk Audio, Sonodyne, Astonia etc.

Use this kit, there is provision to make it work in bridged mode. Just add transformer of 220VA (~1500/-Rs) you are done. Also you can add this inside the cabinet as this wont eat much space and not getting heated with small strip of metal as heatsink.

Or put all this into small metal cab and make piggyback on backside of Subwoofer box without disturbing it.

Awaiting something better...shall post it with reviews when it's ready to roll.:)

Finally...after much hush hush I managed to attach sub woofer amp kit to my passive sub woofer...got the DAC sub woofer cable...hooked it and there it is, woofer started shaking my room...while watching movies I thought that I am in PVR.

Somebody truly said that sub is the heart of movie and hence is inseparable part of the 5.1 experience.

Thanks to one of the FM Masterjedi from whom I purchased the kit. I had teething troubles initially as the sub wasn't working with the amp kit, it was due to minor connector glitch.

So those who have got passive sub and wants to upgrade it to powered ones. Please don't loose your heart...no need to spend 15-20k on new sub.Get an amp kit worth Rs.3K..hook it to your passive sub and you are ready to go.

Please be sure to use good quality RCA cable.

So now my complete 5.1 setup is ready.
