I had purchased a WD media player last year
Western Digital TV Live HD Media Player WDBAAN0000NBK | eBay

I was using it with 1 TB hard drive and was working fine for small movies 2 - 3 GB.
Now i purchased a LG LV 42 5500 TV. I am trying to use the media player with the TV. The player initally played small mkv and ts clips. When i tried to play huge files like 10GB files, the player kind of hangs. (like it is reading the USB and not completing it). if i press home button immediately the home screen is shown.

I dont know if it is the file size or the audio format in the file ( DTS ) or what.

Should i go for a better player like xtreamer prodigy ?

I am not a expert buts its always good to update the firmare and try to reset the player to factory defaults.

i have a WD medial player 2nd Gen it has played files upto 12GB without any problem.

If the firmware update doesn't fix the issue, Yogesh is probably right about the header... some of the newer mkvs have this problem...

Luckily it's easy to fix... Google for the issue and download the appropriate version of mkvmerge and you can fix the issue in a minutes by remuxing the file again...

Wonder if the latest versions of the WD TV fixes the issue...

Yes, header removal compression issue is fixed in WD TV Live in the latest versions ... I am using 1.05.xx I don't see any issue like this ..

I did not update the firmware as my player already had the latest firmware.
So the challenge for me is to find the root cause of the bug.

THe WD media player has a feature ( enabled by default) where the player first scans all the files in the storage device we connect and stores the metadata of it. It used this metadata information to quickly locate the file or may be to display it when we regularly browse.

My 1TB usb hard disk has 1000's of files. So when i connect this harddrive the scanning goes on and on and on. When this scanning is going on if u try to play any video file, the player either reboots or kind of hangs.

So what i will try is
1. I will get my friends harddrive 500GB which has about 100 movies.
2. I will try to play using this hard drive. If it plays we know that too many files in a harddrive is causing the issue. If here also i see the same issue, then GOD SAVE me. I will switch to some new player :)

If the problem is with scanning, then allow it to complete. Also check whether your HDD has any bad sectors. How many partitions the hdd has?

Bull eye, caught the issue.

My 1 TB was full ( no space left ). The WD media player requires 4GB of space for making the metadata of my hard drive. The media player shows that.
ONce i got my space free, i am able to play movies.
But i should say my wd mini media player is a bad player. It hangs so many times on some videos. Waiting for Xtreamer prodigy to arrive. It is a grab for me.
