I have WD My book essential 1TB, which was bought in Dubai last nov. I used this for playing movie with Xreamer. I didnt had any problem with that till last sunday.

I was watching "the sting" and took a short break, at this time my 2yr old niece took the xtreamer remote and pressed all the buttons randomly for few mins. I stopped her and I tried to play the movie again, but it didnt play. I was able to play other movies though. I connected the HDD to my laptop and accessed the movie file, It throwed an error message saying some cyclic redundancy check and I have to format the drive. But, I was able to browse other folders. I dont want to format my drive since I had around 400Gb's of data. So, I decided to ran a hard disk check. It took 4+ hours to complete, but the check didnt give any message. I reboot the system and connected the HDD again, but to my surprise, the system didnt read that drive. ( I had two drives one is I: 30+GB and other is J: around 950GB+) But it read the I: . I opened the disk management and it showed that J: is now RAW format. I really gone mad seeing that. Whenever I try to open the drive it asked me to format the drive. So much of data in it. I googled for solution, and the only solution I can find is take data recovery and format the drive. No other way to go, I finally installed data recovery software and I was able to retrive all the files successfully, but my laptop is 150GB only and I can free only 50GB, So i had to sacrifice most of my movies and took only important files for 50GB.

After data recovery, I restarted the system, again to my surprise my I: drive began to show same error. I formatted my I:drive first but the format was unsuccessful, everytime it said windows cannot complete the format, after few tries, I restarted the system, this time both the drives disappeared from "My computer", even it didnt show in disk management. It seems everytime I find a way to rectify my problem, It went worser than before. In disk management It shows the hard disk as "unallocated" with around 930GB of space in the disk management. I really dont understand why 1TB of hard disk shows only 930GB now. Again I look for solution in internet, and I come up with a diagnostic tool from WD website, I ran the tool but within an hour it stopped saying "Too many bad sectors found" and this time I decided to do "write zeros" and start the partitions from fresh. "write zeros' was successfull till 50% but after it always shows error and cannot write zeros on that particular sector.

I lost my HDD now. It is totally dead, Everytime i try to format from disk management it always says I/O error formatting cannot be done like that. I really gone mad. I lost most of my data's, Many movies, I had many secretmyth HDrip collections...everything gone...

Has anybody came across this kind of situation? any advice or suggestions? is there anyway to get my HDD work or buying a new HDD is the only solution now???

Hi...
Have you contacted WD? Through a friend's experience I have heard that their service is very good. He accidentally dropped his hard-drive and it didn't work - they still replaced it with a brand new one !
I am not sure whether they can retrieve your data for you but at least you will get a replacement.

I contacted them yesterday by email asking how to rectify "too many bad sectors" problem. Still awaiting for their reply.

But, I tried to write zeros and formatting today only so, I am yet to put this in note to them. Also, I purchased the hard disk in Dubai and now it shows "out of region" under warranty for my product, So I am not sure whether they would replace out of region product. Anyway, I am just waiting for their reply and then I will ask them about possibilities of replacement.

i think there is a very important message here,

and that is, that everyone should save "CRITICAL DATA" on a remote (paid) server.

personal data has immeasurable value, and if that can be saved and preserved on a remote location,

crisis and death can be avoided!:)

hold on buddy dont worry.. first things bad sectors are more prone to external HDD's

second that mistakenly few buttons have been pressed..

now do not format the drive..

and its showing unallocated as its just like a new HDD and it showing 930gb is absolutely fine.. as if you start calculating from bit and bytes and with algorithm of 1024 u will get the same figure.. 500 gb will show 460gb and 320 will show 293 and so on.

so first thing go to disk management and create a new partition ( one new partition).

if u have xp..in format style select NTFS and quick format.

if win 7 just create a partition and leave it and reboot and then try formatting..

then try fixing errors mycomputer >rhighlight drive > right click > properties > tools> error checking> check 1st box> start..

see if that helps and you are unable to fix it.. we will debug it.....

if that does not work.. we can get the platters demagnetised...

dont worry....

u shud have posted before formatting.. we might have saved your data..

u shud get a replacement ..

also its a portable or external powered.??

I have 4 external Hard Drive (1TB (2) / 500GB /160GB)and my main fear is loosing data due to its malfunction. It will be a doomsday for me if it ever happens.I pray to God when ever I handle them.

for critical data, it is best to backup in a different hard disk. This hard disk should be disconnected after taking backups and then should be stored in a safe place.
Using cloud to backup data also is an excellent solution as suggested by Shershah.

Ironhorse,

I already did that before posting here, Whenever I try to do format, It shows I/O error cannot be formatted. Even, I tried using EASEUS partition manager but no use, it throwed error and said cannot be formatted.

no probs.. try to debug it..

help me with exact model number and lemme check if i can get a debug utility for the same.. if no go we will do it manually from command prompt..

Its been a week since I raised my query to WD, but no reply so far...Even My laptop is full and out of space..so i decided to buy a new one...Which one will be a good option...Right now my mind says not to go for WD...will Seagate be good option? pls suggest

Well...

Yours is not a single issue. Lots are in the same boat. I had 2 or 3 failures already. All are 1 TB Discs. Different ones. All data gone. had to collect them all back after going through lot of trouble.

So your disc is gone. Recovering data is not so easy. by the "google" techniques. You may need to go to some experts but the price is just too much. So just forget if its movies+music..or anything off the net.

WD service sucks. If anyone says anything else, they dont know shit. True story. One of my HDD was bought from a local dealer. that was replaced in 8 or so working days. Rest of them after over 2 months. yea 2 months.

Their email CC is worthless. mail replied by Out of india folks who replies like a drone. Register a RMA in their site. Pack accordingly with the RMA sticker and all. They will pick up for free. But my advise spend that 200 bucks and send it. I got a call from some courier guys abt 3 weeks AFTER i send it personally.

And yea their telephone CC folks are hard to get by. I called God knows hw many times.

And yea if still not believing just google for WD RMA issues. :)

Next time pick a seagate. Just go to ur local ACCEL Frontline and drop the HDD. in a week u get ur replacement.

Jeri,

I had a look on their website regarding RMA, but i think we should send the HDD with their packing and accessories..and God only knows where my packing and accessories are....

Even, I am thinking to get seagate....which one would be a better choice, freeagent or goflex...whats ur opinion? got any idea??

never in my life i bought a WD.. m a seagate fan.. and seagate is quite responsive when comes to service and replacement..

however i do not disregard WD both are equally good.. however lil more no of failures have been nticed with WD recently..

what kind of drive you want to buy.. 2.5 portable or 3.5 external powered ???

and what size .. 1tb -2tb - 3tb ????

here are the prices updated today... grab what u like..

nethin will do... depends on what type you want.. also budget.. but i would suggest to go for the cheapest available in the lot as another 15 days you will see the expensive one coming down drastically.. and this happens every fortnight.

Ironhorse, thanks for the list, but the size of the image has been reduced so couldnt read the writings in it. even i saved it, but still the same is small. Please repost it with a proper size.

I need 1TB or 1.5Tb if the price diff is not big. Also, i will be using it for xtreamer so I need external powered HDD.
