I am having 12 year old sony Hi-Fi V-60. It's speakers are damaged also the CDs are not playing now. But is amplifier section is good. I am thinking of buying a pair of bookshelfs for music. What is the expert advice on this. The old system is arted 2500 W PMPO. May be like 80 W in rms. Impedance is written as 6 ohms.

Wharfedale are 6 ohms & will match with old sony system by impedance. But you need to carry the amp & demo to check the sound quality.

Unfortunately I can not carry the hi fi for demo as I live in a remote place. Anybody has any experience of building such a system? Good new speaker with old stereo amp?

Speaker matching is very important as you can miss what you used to listen.Try if any FM has similar speakers.

I have tried it before, with different speakers.. But, this is still a compromise. Most of Sony old hifi's comes with STK IC's which basically has good sonic midranges, but still there THD's are way too high compared to a dedicated Stereo amp. Your start and stop effect of a sound wont be quite not upto the mark, here. Buy a Norge amp, or something similar if you are buying the wharfedales..

And adding an external DAC, to your source, ASUS O play will improve the sound far, better..

Unfortunately, there are no Cheaper DAC's to my knowledge.. :( But, I had a chance to listen to Asus O play mini, and I felt the sound bit muddy.. U can always look for a used Stereo Reciever.. I feel thats the cheapest solution.Or a AVR,but Stereo Recver will be definitely will be better than AVR..

Krish,

I would suggest you to purchase some pre-owned Sony hi-fi speakers,as mostly amps get out of working and Speakers live like gem for long.It would cost very less around (3-4) and save money.
Spending 10-13 K should be worth and am not sure Son Amp can feed Wharaf's to satisfy our expected quality of music.

If you have an idea to upgrade the Sony system with an dedicated Stereo amp in next two years, then go a ahead in purchase Wharaf's.

Else, Stick with Sony system+ sony hi-fi speakers, keep eye on Olx,quickR or so.

The Wharfedale 10.1s are very good speakers, but you won't be doing justice to it by hooking it up with the Sony. You really need to upgrade your amp before anything else. DACs, in my opinion, can wait for the moment. If you still want to buy the Wharfs, consider the 9.1s also, they are cheaper and don't sound much different. Also consider Polk Audio Tsi 100, not very hi end, but would be more than enough for the Sony...

the wharfedales needs a good amp to sing, the sony may not do justice to them
