Hi friends,
I recently got a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 122 for my Yamaha A-S500 from HiFimart. Since audition for me was not possible, I made a decision on the basis of FMs experience with Wharfedale+Yamaha combo. Discussion with Anil from HiFiMart, who calmly addressed my queries , further helped me finalize the speakers. Ali from Sound Foundations was very kind to design a customized version of the excellent-looking Nexus stands for me. Will receive the stands in a few days. Thanks to all of them.
Although it is too early to give an opinion about the speakers, the first impression has been very good. Following a listening session with the Wharfedales, its a kind of culture shock for me, as I have been used to the big n bad' sound, and the Yamaha reinforced that bad habit by effortlessly driving my old floorstanders. I summarize my initial experience with the new speakers as follows (pardon me for my non-technical terminology):
Currently the speakers are mounted on the old towers until I receive the stands. The speakers are very sweet sounding. There is no harshness. Initially I mistook it for lack of highs, but the treble is sufficiently there. Just that it now doesnt hurt the ears anymore. For the first time, I have enjoyed listening to the old Bollywood classics, especially Lata jis songs.
The bass is very good for the speaker size. I can hear it, but I cannot feel it so much as I do with the towers. I guess the difference in the woofer surface area accounts for this. Initially the lows appeared to be muddled, but after a couple of hours, it began to improve. I hope the burn-in will improve it further.
One thing that I like about my old beasts is that they go very loud than the Wharfedales at the same volume levels on the amp---around 50% louder---and the sound is very lively, albeit with a hint of ouch the details :). Does this mean that my floorstanders are more sensitive than the bookshelves, or is there some other reason? Will the Diamonds stress the amp more? FMs could enlighten me on this.
Having said this, I would say that the overall musical experience is highly satisfying with the Diamonds.
Thanks.
Here are a few images. Sorry for the poor-quality photos.

Don't worry about the Wharfedales stressing your amplifier, the amp is rated at 85W@8 ohms and is more than capable of driving the speakers to deafening volume.
Wharfedale sound is on the warmer side, they are laid back and Yamaha being more on the brighter side they pair well. I personally like my music a little lively, with more energy. AS-500 has plenty of power in the reserve to provide that energy the Wharfedales need, good choice and you will enjoy the combination.

I am looking to pick up the AS-500 myself in a couple of months time, enjoy!

I got the stands yesterday. Earlier I referred to a different model. They are actually the customized version of Aura. Thanks to Ali for sending the stands carefully packed. It was a pleasant surprise to see included even the L-key required to attach the top plate. I appreciate the way Ali cares for even for the minute things. Now the speakers sound better and look even better.

Hi mpw, here are a few photos:

Currently the layout and placement are suboptimal (and so is the camera :) ). Still I enjoy better quality sound compared with my previous experience. Althought I miss the floor-shaking days of my old towers, the music is more enjoyable now. I will plan better
placement for the music rig in future and am currently saving for it and educating myself. :)

arvind,

thanks for the pics.

try to move the speakers forward as much as you can ( as is possible in the room conditions )

keep about 6 ft between them and toe them in to your listening position

you may think of a low level rack to accomodate your PC and amplifier.

the speakers are looking good on the stands.

someday you may want to fill stand inside the stands ( if you wish to tighten up the bass a touch ) ( and if this facility is available. but take your time about this )

regards
mpw

Thanks, mpw. Will implement your suggestions. Currently the speakers are 1.5 feet from the back walls. The side-wall distance is uneven, the left speaker being 3 feet away and the right one being 2.5 feet away. The speakers are about 4.5 feet from each other. The listening position is about 7 feet from the speakers.
You are right about the computer table. I suspect its height may hamper imaging in some way. I will plan something about it.

For the stands, does the plain dry river sand (sieved) work well? The Ganges flows nearby.

Magma is the best guy to answer that but I think the sand of the holy Ganges will do very well as well..

Firstly try without sand for a couple of weeks and do the
Sand filling later. Get yourself some blutack to seal the top plate hole where the sand is to be poured from. PM me if you have trouble getting it.

Good luck !

I should be in rishikesh end November for a 2 days of solitude which I plan to take this year.
