Hi friends,
I recently got a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 122 for my Yamaha A-S500 from HiFimart. Since audition for me was not possible, I made a decision on the basis of FMs experience with Wharfedale+Yamaha combo. Discussion with Anil from HiFiMart, who calmly addressed my queries , further helped me finalize the speakers. Ali from Sound Foundations was very kind to design a customized version of the excellent-looking Nexus stands for me. Will receive the stands in a few days. Thanks to all of them.
Although it is too early to give an opinion about the speakers, the first impression has been very good. Following a listening session with the Wharfedales, its a kind of culture shock for me, as I have been used to the big n bad' sound, and the Yamaha reinforced that bad habit by effortlessly driving my old floorstanders. I summarize my initial experience with the new speakers as follows (pardon me for my non-technical terminology):
Currently the speakers are mounted on the old towers until I receive the stands. The speakers are very sweet sounding. There is no harshness. Initially I mistook it for lack of highs, but the treble is sufficiently there. Just that it now doesnt hurt the ears anymore. For the first time, I have enjoyed listening to the old Bollywood classics, especially Lata jis songs.
The bass is very good for the speaker size. I can hear it, but I cannot feel it so much as I do with the towers. I guess the difference in the woofer surface area accounts for this. Initially the lows appeared to be muddled, but after a couple of hours, it began to improve. I hope the burn-in will improve it further.
One thing that I like about my old beasts is that they go very loud than the Wharfedales at the same volume levels on the amp---around 50% louder---and the sound is very lively, albeit with a hint of ouch the details
. Does this mean that my floorstanders are more sensitive than the bookshelves, or is there some other reason? Will the Diamonds stress the amp more? FMs could enlighten me on this.
Having said this, I would say that the overall musical experience is highly satisfying with the Diamonds.
Thanks.
