hi Audiophiles...
request for a little gyan. What does "HDMI Pass Thru" imply. For e.g. the Onkyo India Product page for TX SR 307 talks about this features...

How is it different from models like TXSR 577 where it mentions "HDMI Audio Video Processing"

Does this imply that in models with HDMI Pass Thru it will not process the audio (decode, D to A and route to various speakers) in HDMI input signals...

Am planning to invest in a mid range AV HT system and wanted to understand the limitations of a AVR which has HDMI Pass through rather than HDMI Audio Video processing.

Thanks a lot for the help.

You are more or less correct here, HDMI pass means that the video stream or audio stream is not processed by the receiver; this means your receiver will only "pass through" the audio and video to the TV/display without any sort of audio and/or video processing. HDMI pass through does not allow HD audio, as the receiver cannot process audio through HDMI. You have to stick with Optical which can only process DD and DTS (not DTS MA and DD True HD)
Its always advisable to have HD processing in the AVR. Best route is the source device set to Bitstream Audio and the receiver decoding the HD audio and sending it to the spks.......
In a jest avoid pass through receivers if HD Audio HT is your objective

Hope this helps...

OK that sounds ;-) like a good advice.
So could someone help give a few packages(model numbers) of AVR+SpkrSystem with HDMI Repeater capability..again entry level (30K Max). Not at the high end.

Or maybe just the AVR with HDMI capability but with 5.1/7.1 Analogue Output (that way I can reuse my current active speaker system which takes only RCA 5.1 input)

onkyo 3300 htib (speakers and avr) will suit your budget easily. it around 23-25 k based on people who have bought it recently. i dont know about the analouge output but it does HD audio processing over HDMI

Thanks Homiyar
I kinda am reaching that conclusion.. the only thing is I believe it's not readily available in Delhi/NCR region.. also I am tempted to buy it online in US and have it delivered.. I gather that there is no Customs for items < INR 25K...
anybody got experiece of using ebayUS or ebay global.
Only fear I have is of damaged Spkrs or cracked AVR casing ...

would the HDMI pass through work if the amp/receiver is switched off, or in standby mode ?

This depends on the AV receiver in use. The Denon 1910 I have supports this feature, but in that mode, the receiver is essentially in a semi-suspend state and it eats up around 30W of power. It does not work on my Denon w/o any power to the AV receiver.
