What is zone 1 and 2?

Hi All,

can any one explain what is zone 1 and 2 in AVR?Yamaha 671 has zone1 and 2.what is the use of it?.

My confusion is,let say we will take 5.1 system.here what is zone 1 and zone 2?
I am new to HT systems,thats why I am asking,dont mind if it is repeated thread .

An AVR with multiple zones lets you simplify your life without having multiple amps all over your house.

Scenario 1: You want to set up a dedicated theater in a room, but want to do more common listening in your living room.

Scenario 2: Your watch movies on your 5.1 system in your living room, but want to setup a two channel system in bedroom for late night listening.

Scenario 3: You want to set up a good two channel system with higher quality full range speakers alongside your multichannel setup. or want to dedicated higher quality speakers for two channel listening.

A good AVR can be used in all the above scenarios to setup a good system without stacking components over components all over the house. You can designate your living room as Zone 1, your bedroom as Zone 2 and so on. Possibilities are endless, depending on the way it is implemented in your AVR.

AFAIK the Zones are not for the regular single location setup ... the zones are given with two different outputs.. If you have a Zone 2/3 along with a 5.1 channel output then at the rear of your receiver you would be able to see another set of speaker outputs tagged Zone 2/3

These outputs are not a part of your main 5.1 atleast.. sometimes there are zone 3/4 even. in the pic observe that there is a facility to setup a 7.1 with an added Zone 2 & 3

If you are not sure, don't bother about it. It's a serious advice.

Just hook all your speakers to the indicated connectors on the AVR and you will be good to go. Most AVRs come preconfigured to use Zone 1 by default. And in simple setup, just hooking your speakers to the correct terminals is more than enough.
