What panels do Philips LCD/LED have?

^Nope. Philips walked away from the LG.Philips consortium that made IPS panels.

Now their TVs have either CMO/AUO S-MVA or A-MVA or Sharp UV2A panels.

Why did they dump IPS panels...are they crappy...then why people want to buy LG tv only cause "they can play mkv"....inspite of which panel they are using.

My guess is though IPS produces a better color/contrast/depth/viewing angle IPS as a technology itself cannot allow the high refresh rates all other manufacturer's promote themselves by. It most likely cannot be pushed much further of 75hz. And as we know, a tv is for images in motion, the human eye has been scientifically observed to track upto 250 frames per second.

So even though IPS has the potential to produce better viewing angles color contrast and depth, it has a limited speed and has a tendency to borderline on a "yellow" picture tone. And the market today is driven by speed just as contrast rates were bloated in the past when manufactures started writing dynamic contrast rates instead of static.

So unless a manufacturer promotes themselves with 150hz 170hz 200hz 250 hz / motionflow / smoothflow and what not propaganda, they will not survive. I imagine thats why IPS was dumped for VA panels.

VA panels have very deep blacks which give a pseudo impression of great contrast while colors on IPS panels on the other hand have deeper colour contrast.

VA panels are also much faster and in general is a more balanced type of panel in itself.

IPS is better for professional work as a point of reference
VA suits mass market better.

Philips is now a chinese company , and if yoiu ead enough -members ( incl me) had pathetic service expereince..so stay away....

The main advantage the IPS have is the viewing angle i.e they have lower color shift at off axis, but still have the contrast shift.

IPS panels have poor contrast compared to VA based panels which include SMVA,AMVA,SPVA,UV2A.
In tv grade IPS panels the color accuracy cannot be compared to the same level as professional IPS monitors.

The best performaing lcd tvs for the most part have come from VA stable.
The Sony HX925 has a panel which has lower color shift and contrast shift at off axis compared to other VA and IPS based tvs.Its unclear what tech it uses but its definitely of SPVA origin but with some proprietary tech from Sony possibly the hybrid FPA .

LG ips panels are also cheaper for companies to buy then say a samsung SPVA or a AUO AMVA panel.

As far as what panels philips uses ifs a 42" or 47" tv its mostly a LG IPS panel,if its a 40" or a 46" its Uv2A or AMVA or SMVA.

Great info folks! @corElements..I had a doubt.. you told IPS panels can be scaled up to 75Hz, but LG has tv's that claim as 200hz, 400hz.. and LG would be using IPS, so how is that possible?

I'm not sure but i can speculate software interpolation or they've done something to push those speeds at the cost of picture quality IPS is known for on professional displays.

Stay away from Philips , their production facility in China and after sales service is awful.......the only good product they still make are the Shavers that are Made in Holland.......... rest are a waste of money......

I feel Philips still makes very good products despite outsourcing its entire AV business to Funai. Philips headphones and DVD & BD-Disc Players are a good testimony to this. Philips 21:9 format Ambilight TVs are 'Made in Europe'. My Philips DVD player underwent a problem and was rectified by the Videocon service center. The service guy himself told me that only Philips TVs are made in India by Videocon and that the parts for the other products like DVD Players are procured directly from Philips.

Philips is not a Chinese company !

Philips is worse than a chinese company, they provided pathetic service when my brothers crt conqued off.also a 3in one required lens change just after year, when it was hardly used.they even tried to cheat a forum member by giving him lower model no replacement.videocon is probably best thing happened to philips

The last product I purchased from Philips was their 29" CRT HDTV in 2006 and is still working fine without any issues and is razor sharp and can put even the most modern LED TVs to shame. Another product purchased from Philips in the year 2009 was the Philips Water Filter which too is a great product. No problems with either of the 2 products which are over 7 years old now which is a good VFM.
The water filter installation guy had told me when he installed my filter that these are the last series of machines actually made by Philips and now onward do not buy Philips as all their products will be made by Videocon. Videocon is well know for their cheap quality and use and throw products. Philips products (European) are known for use and retain for long duration probably across generations. Given the current trend in Asian markets these products will not succeed as technology changes fast now than it used to a decade ago negating the need for long lasting products.
Unless you own a high-end tube / Class A / Speakers there is always an urge to upgrade to the next level due to technology changes where the / Japanese/Chinese / Korean products have an edge over the European products due to their flexibility in allowing to use and throw when its obsolete. Taking my case, I am so hooked and amazed by my Philips CRT HDTV that i do not find any other product to be superior to this in terms of PQ / Contrast resolution and image depth that i am not getting the urge to upgrade unless their is a far superior product in the market at reasonable price point.

Having read many '-'ve comments such as these about Philips I too was extremely sceptical about handing over my Philips product to the authorised Videocon Service Center. Having done that what I got in return was 'much better than expected' service. This has not just surprised me but also changed my perception about 2nd tier brands like Philips, Videocon and the like.

I'm not insisting that all products made by Philips are damn good. Every brand has a certain area in which it outshines the others. In Philips' case it's DVD Players, Headphones, 2.1 speaker systems etc. My DVD Player's lens lasted for 2 years without a single problem - I played MP3 and DVD discs on it every single day.

If what you have is a Philips CRT TV with proprietary Pixel Plus technology I've heard that it is one of the best TVs ever made. I've also heard that it is one of the only few CRT-TVs launched in India with high end features like Progressive Scan and 100Hz scan.

Most of the Asian brands like Samsung, SONY and others only make products commercially based on technology invented by the Europeans.

As far as the European and American markets are concerned, the only parameter considered by the customers is quality. There have been CRT TVs in the US with HDMI inputs. Whereas in India we didn't even have CRT TVs with progressive scan technology to enjoy 480p content played from any DVD Player in that format ! Ever since the dawn of Doordarshan, our eyes have been used only to viewing the 'interlaced scan' format.

Even today certain European brands cater their customers with their 'Made in Europe' products. One fine example is the Philips Ambilight series of TVs. It is 'Made in Europe'. It's sad that such products exited/never came to India as ours is a market where well advertised inexpensive brands like LG, Samsung and Toshiba have lion's share. This is because people hardly think far about the longevity of these products.

I have philips 32 inch 6357 led tv.I tried searching to know the type of panel used but couldn't get much info about that. But the pic quality is very good both in sd and Hd content.

I think one need not lose his piece of mind whether the panel is from lg or sharp, or it is made in china.
If sd and hd is good on the phillips set, one has to just sit back and relax and enjoy.:)

Yes 'VA' panels have good blacks and colors but not so good viewing angles whereas the 'IPS' panels have wider viewing angles with less contrast. There are also other panels like TN & U2VA.
The LCD-panel game today is so different unlike during the CRT era when the Trinitron picture tube was (theoretically) superior to its shadow mask counterpart!
