hi friends,

one of my friend is coming from UK this monthend and i want to buy a good audio system for myself...my budget is around 25000rs..so wht all things should i buy frm there or is it cheap here ??

as my room is small so i dnt wanna buy floor standing speakers ..other than that again i want to avoid 5.1 setup..so kindly suggest a 2.1 setup.....if you come across a good 5.1 then i can consider that also.....

waiting for reply :licklips:

@ that budget imo go for a good pair of bookshelves and a stereo amp. the wharedale diamonds is one to consider. bose 301 is also good. amps you can look at are yamaha, denon etc. where you get it from is up to you. but i believe these mentioned products are similarly priced here and in the uk

Yes UK is not really a very cheap destination for HiFi products. Singapore / Malaysia / Thailand yes .
However you should look at some of the British brands.
Freeze on a product and see what the price difference from India to UK works up to. If it is more than 25% it makes sense.
Anything under 25. then it makes sense to pick it up from India

Usually what I have noticed is that you will see a major difference in Indian and British prices with higher end equipment.
With lower end equipment saving 2-3k does not really make sense.
Because it makes sense to pay the difference here and get a warranty on the product

the Yamaha AS500 stereo amp is a good option for hifi from UK. see this:

Yamaha AS500 Black | Stereo Amplifier | Richer Sounds

also the panasonic bet 210 blurry player (with DVD multi region) is going for cheap. most blu-rays in india are region free and importing BR movies from amazon uk is also quite cheap. check this out:

Panasonic DMPBDT210 MR Black | 3D Blu-ray Player with DVD Multi-Region | Richer Sounds

After converting it to INR it works out to 19200 exchange rate 80.
the Yamaha AS500 costs around 22k-23k in India.
Does it make sense to get something from UK for a 3k-4k difference with zero warranty.
Plus the uncertainty of haggling with customs at the Indian Airport

^^ not sure about Yam's price in India. plus GBP is now 77 :ohyeah: anyway, what you say does make sense.

there are many more options on richersounds at a bargain. one can compare and buy. i found the pana 210 deal damn good. cos i checked for the same here in a panasonic brand store and the guy quoted INR 17800 for BDT-110...!!

so bdt-210 @ GBP160 (approx INR 12500) seems like a good deal and m going for it.!

That's a sweet deal. Makes sense :clapping:

VAT is very high in UK. Isn't it something ridiculous like 20% now? EDIT: Corrected rate.

Bad news if you live there, but the good news is you will be able to get some rebate when you export your purchase, so the final price will be less than the Richer Sounds advertised price.

You obviously have to buy from a store that takes part in the refund scheme. Yes, Richer Sounds does :).

Make sure you get the form from them, that you have all your paperwork correct, and that you make the claim at the VAT desk before checking in for your flight home.

You do not get all the tax back, but you do get enough to make it worthwhile.

If you are doing family shopping, remember that this applies to all sorts of stuff. Check with the stores, when you buy. You may need to have your passport with you at some places; others are happy to let you fill in your own paperwork.

25% I had no idea it was that freakin high.

Singapore and Thailand have it at 7% and again the same procedure as you mentioned above to claim the rebate from the airport.

Sorry, it's 20% ... but that's still pretty bad. It easily makes the difference between affordable and not.

British law decrees that, in consumer (rather than business to business) situations, prices are shown inclusive of VAT, so it least it doesn't come as nasty shock at the last minute.
