My trusted yamaha is giving up on me and am now back in d mkt for a new a/v receiver after a good 5 odd yrs.
I need the receiver to connect to my Onkyo HT 230 speakers. They deliver 100w rms per channel with a 150 rms sub woofer.

My usage is 90% movies - 10% music.

The avr's in my mind were the Yamaha 471, denon 1612 and pioneer 821.

Some dealers r saying yamaha newer models have serious ic issues hence avoid.
Pioneer seems popular among-st dealers but they have hardly any reviews or mention here nor on any other Indian forum.
1612 is popular but is it really that good???

I did audition em but each amp was connected to different set of speakers which made it difficult to get an accurate comparison.

NEW problem -
1612 is discontinued, 1713 is here, pioneer 821 is gone and 822 is here. Both models with air play, no performance upgrade and around 7k more expensive. Damn... i don't need airplay either....

Need help here....

Of the 3 which is a better option?
I prefer a more forward but non fatigue sound.. Aka, a Denon 2000 headphone over a AKG-701.
Why no mention of pioneer anywhere??????

Thinking of keeping budget to 30K

Pls help

P.s : Will upgrade to bookshelves in a yrs time(100 rms), my amp will remain the same for the bookshelves too

Nah, never quiet enjoyed onkyo's SS, besides i like sea facing and onkyo seem to have a serious corrosion problem (as told to me by almost every dealer)

I am using a Pioneer since the last 2 years .... a basic version .... 519. Pretty good performance ... does all the necessary without breaking a sweat. Use Wharf Moviestar 70+ speaker package with it. Excellent for both, movies and music.

thanks avi for ur reply, my query.. I chose the ht-230 over the moviestar 70+ cause the ht-230 is a lot more fwd sounding package with good bass impact. To my ear the 70+ is a bit neutral and laid back. Now every review is claiming that pioneers are very harsh, i.e more emphasis towards treble, is that the case? Asking cause my speakers too have a tilt towards treble.. Dont want harshness in the SS

Not that I felt ...... you also have a big band inbuilt in the AVR to adjust bass and treble. Both can be played around with ....

Moviestars are bright sounding too. The reason I chose them over the rest satellites was because they were equally proficient with movies as well as music. In fact, it is doing the music duty nowadays ... close to 90%. I hardly watch any movies.

yup they r gr8 sounding too...

But my question still remains pending, pioneer 821/822 vs Denon 1612/1713 vs yamaha 471/571.

Prices i have got..
pioneer 821 - 23k
pioneer 822 - 26.5k
denon 1612 - 25k
denon 1713 - 29 odd
Yamaha 471 - 31k -------- y so expensive???
yamaha 571 - 35k

Another Pioneer user here. VSX-919AH-K (2010 model if I remember correctly). Using it with KEF's speaker package (5.1 satellites with KUBE subwoofer)

Sounds excellent for movies as well as music.

Look for the one with the minimum bells and whistles, since none end up getting seriously used.

If possible, select a model with 'zone 2' unamplified audio capability. This feature would allow you to connect a mid/high-end stereo amp at the zone 2 outlet to feed music (of your source-choice) to yet another location. Huge flexibility and convenience! My Norge 1000 does this duty at zone 2.

Ok after a few auditions today...
yamaha 473 seems like every dealers fav but to me at 35-37k its way too over priced.

Denon 1912 for 35k.. good deal?

I really didnt like the denon 1612 at all.. Seriously don't know what d fuss was all about.. Its good but imho completely over-hyped.

Pioneers were good too. aka 822 and 922 but every dealer mentioned that if it gets spoilt, its a nightmare to get it repaired again.

I really liked the 473 yamaha but its way way too over priced..

Damn im stuck

My situation is cause all the older models r discontinued and newer ones r overpriced.

If 473 is pricey, why not stick to 471. Its a fantastic AVR for its price. The quality of its DAC is well acknowledged. Should be available for less than 24K.

The best quote I received for the 471 is 31k
473 best quote 35.5

473 is available at sound out Mumbai

821 for 23k with Bill and warranty

I have Denon 1912, good AVR for budget AV setup. Pair with good speakers and subwoofer sure you will like it. it serve good for music and movies.

35k is good price if you get with B&W.

I heard them with Focal audio speakers. Didnt note the model no but they r bookshelf sized 5.1 package. Also the same was connected with definitive 800. Now that was a WOW setup.Sounded better than any mirage or kef under 1 lac systems that i have heard.
Focals were for around 60k and 80k.
