Hi,

I have the following setup:
Yamaha v463 av receiver
Pioneer DVD player
Wharfedale diamond 10.1, 10cc, 10dfs, sw150

I have connected the analog out of my DVD player to the cd input of my avr for music listening and I am reasonably satisfied with the sound quality as far as country music, rock music etc. i play the music in 2 ch stereo mode.

however when I play a U2 cd specifically the sound output sucks, bass is all over the place. I am not able to figure out the issue. As other CDs sound just fine. Songs like with or without you sound really crappy!

My 10k Philips system in my bedroom plays the U2 cd much better. Even my car stereo - pioneer plays it better.

Can someone pls help. Do you think I need to buy a cd player to improve the sound quality. However I am still confused as my 10k Philips system sounds better when I play U2

Why are you using analog out of DVD? Try the optical or coaxial out. Also check whether your AVR is using any DSP like Dolby Prologic. Try stereo.

U2 songs are generally all over the place, don't worry. The reason why low end systems play them better is because their bass producing ability is limited and midrange/voices come out more starkly.

If there is an equalizer try and tweak it accordingly.

I would tend to think that's the problem.

Not sure what to make of this unless the U2 CD is badly mixed but then again it sounds good to on a Philips.

Guess I'll go with Cor here.

Thanks for the input guys. I use the left, right -audio out of the DVD for only music listening and have connected to the cd input of my av receiver. I have not tried optical out as yet. However I use hdmi out when I play DVDs and have connected the same to my hdmi DVD input of the avr. CDs on the hdmi does not sound good and hence I assumed optical out will Sound the same as essentially for both we are using the dac of the avr. Hope my assumption is correct

Or I should try the optical out for the cd?

That's right.

Try to borrow a DAC and see if it improves the SQ. Or else borrow a CDP and see how much the SQ improves.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
