Wtb emt938

Can the members please guide me price and availability of EMT938?

It will all depend on the condition of the TT, arm cartridge and whether the in built phono pre amplifier is working etc. Since EMTs are not easy to get, you can get some idea from sales made on ebay, audiogon etc

Getting a EMT in India is next to impossible unless you get seriously lucky. There are so many interested buyers waiting patiently.

If you are serious about procuring a EMT, there are ex-EMT employees based out of Germany who refurbish used EMTs and sell them. Typical prices for EMT 938 without cartridge is 3000-4000 euro.

You need to import it into the country at your own risk.

Regards

AFAIK, EMT doesn't make TTs anymore. What you can get from anywhere are used pieces, in varying states of decay. EMT does still make cartridges.

I have seen some 938s while abroad. It is difficult to find one with everything in spot on condition. Some good examples come up once in a while on ebay.de but suggest you don't ship these as shipping and customs will cost a bomb. Better to carry as check-in luggage or in dismantled form. If you have contacts in All India Radio (especially in big city stations), you can probably enquire about auction of decommissioned equipment. Nevertheless, the Indian government has 100s of rules and regulations binding AIR and Doordarshan and their bureaucratic approach means that they let things lie and rust and then sell as scrap.

I am overwhelmed with the response..there is one emt938 on eBay (with 929 tonearm and headshell without cart.)at not too exorbitant price.the price but I am hesitant due to feedback of the supplier..however shall try if can get something from India /gulf.which I may be able to test.thanks..

As many knowledgeable folks have posted, an EMT is an old but very sturdy system. but due to its age its condition can vary from one end of the spectrum to the other.
The only way of guarantee is to buy from one of the renowned refurbishes who were both incidentally EMT engineers. from anyone else its a Hit or a Miss

try writing to Dusch or JP van Vliet below and plan your budget

I purchased a EMT 938 in India and had some issues due to improper packing. I was fortunate to get it to work perfectly well. It's one of the best turntables ever made. Yes, there are specialists who can refurbish it to near original condition but it will cost a fortune.

Would by any luck Herr Semler have the head shell for EMT 929 arm?

Aks07,

There are two type of cartridge mounts for EMT 929 tonearm. One is the EMT diamond mount and the other is regular SME mount. Many of AIR turntables came with SME mount and there will no issue in getting a SME type headshell. If you have a EMT type mount, then you will need to buy a EMT cartridge like TSD15 or buy a EMT mount headshell from Germany and mount your own cartridge. There are very few cartridges that can fit into a EMT type cartridge headshell. One of them is a Denon DL103.

PM me please, if you have more questions.

Cheers

Kuruvila Jacob sold me one from his recently acquired emt938 treasure.
the unit was cosmetically 6/10 but fully functionalotherwise unit was in working condition without any issue which is surprising for such a used machine.

I sent the tone arm to mr. Hans of fabtech who restored it to as New though it costed me about half of New Tonearm price..

got a refurbished tsd-15 from him and also a mc. Card.

Commissioned on Friday with help of local turntable champ mr. Manu Nayar who plays his lps on a transrotor fat bob .

The sound is very good played via Yamaha b-2 amp and onkyo scepter 2000 speakers.

The Pakiza LP which always left me wanting more sounded right..

Thanks to mr. Kuruvila Jacob for his find of Emt lot. Also to everyone who responded to my query.
