Hi All,

I have been researching the HTiBs available in the market for the past few days and there has been a plethora of information on the forum as well as generous advice from the members. Thank you all for that!

I was trying to gather information on the availability of Yamaha HTiBs in Chennai and an evauation of their performance vis-a-vis the comparable Onkyo, Sony and Philips models.

There is relevant information available on some nooks in the forum but I fear it might be a little dated.

I look forward to hearing the precious views of you all on this.

Regards

Hi,

As per Yamaha website the only HtiB available here is YHT-195. The powered subwoofer has 50w RMS. My friend uses this and he is satisfied with the performance.

The other popular HtiB in the forum is Onkyo 5105 and 5100.

Also Philips 4750 is getting good reviews. I auditioned once and it wad great in that price range. madbullram can give you more info on this model.

Even 5105 was good but it is costlier than Philips 4750.

Forget Sony Htib's.

Also let us know your budget as you find HtiB's in all the price range.

Thanks,
Prakash.

Thanks a lot Prakash!

Philips 4750 is more or less phased out of the market and is not available anywhere in Chennai. Even in Bangalore, one store has a demo piece that one doesn't feel encouraged to buy.

I have auditioned the Onkyo 5100,5105 and 3100 models, but the listening conditions were far from ideal ( I am sure you have seen eZone stores).

My budget is around 25-30K

Regards

In your budget Onkyo 5105 is good and can be had for 30K.

Yamaha YHT is good but its subwoofer is only 50w RMS whereas
5105 has 90w rms. I saw Yamaha YHT for 22k in Reliance digital.

Any reason you need to go for HtiB only?

If not you can go for this combination. It Sounds really good. yamaha 463+ Yamah NS 8390 + Yamah NSP 60. I recently purchased this combination for less than 35K.

Thanks,
Prakash,

Thanks a lot, again!

Is there a way to audition the equipment you have mentioned in Chennai?

The main reason of choosing HTiB systems is lack of knowledge about the nuances of sight and sound and also the ocean of equipment out there. So HTiBs are perhaps the least risk option to venture into this world. As I condition myself more towards the increased sophistication in sound, as well as learn more about the disparate equipment, I can move towards setting a high end system which gives me the best value for my blood, sweat and tears :). I would learn to appeciate its performance as wel. The HTiB can be retired to a bedroom then :).

Also, my primary usage for the system would be for movies. From what I hear on this forum, the HTiBs (at least the recommended ones) pass muster for that purpose.

Would have loved to buy the 4750 after madbullram was generous enough to let me audition it, but it just isn't available anymore.

Regards

I am sure there would a be a replacement model available from Philips? Why don't you visit the Philips showroom in Mount Road, and take a look as to what is available?

Before Moser pounces on me, I am not advising against the Onkyo's :). Since you seem to like the Philips, I am suggesting to look if they have a replacement model.

Cheers

I did test the Philips 3569, which is touted as the replacement model for the 4750.

By common consent here, it isn't that good.

I have indicated my own lack of knowledge to know the difference. That, coupled with the far-from-ideal auditioning conditions and the absolutely horrendous shopping experience at eZone, Croma etc., makes me want to bow to the superior competence of the members here and give the 3569 a miss.

That leaves the choice pretty much down to Onkyo, with the 5105 having an edge due to a powered sub. But before I go for it, I thought I'd tap all the wisdom here and ensure I am making the right decision.

I would ideally like to make my decision by selection and not by elimination, hence getting Yamaha into the picture. Prakash brings in another option in terms of gathering a good set of entry-level specialised equipment. But budget is a constarint, since I don't want to spend on a high-end system before I fully understand the goings-on in the equipment Learning all that would take time.

Also, there is significant difference in the prices and availability of the HTiB systems discussed on the forum, in Bangalore and Chennai ( Bangalore being way superior) I wanted to bring those factors into play as well. Since, most of the HTiB systems are similar to each other in terms of performance, the price and availability become important factors too in judgement.

Apologies for rambling on. Appreciate everyone's interest in my little problem.

Thanks

Hi,

You are in Chennai? Did you plan to visit blore in immediate future?

Since you are to use this as an entry into hi-fi, then you can settle with YHT-195, the primary reason being cost, performance is also good. Subwoofer is active with 50w rms. You can also learn things with it. As i mentioned it is available for 21.5K.

For Onkyo 5105 you need to spend close to 30k.

Thanks,
Prakash.

HTiBs are decent for your applications. However if you want to keep something for the longer term with flexibility to enhance down the road then a HTiB with a dedicated receiver or a full fledged AVR is the way to go.

Even though you have fallen for the setup at MBR's house, I would still suggest to audition the Onkyo and Yamaha because your house, music choices, and ears are different than his.

How I wish there was a set up for every set of ears-choices-and-homes! But there isn't, unfortunately.

Any leads on where I can demo the Yamaha system in Chennai?

Thanks All

It will be available with Tata Croma. I recently accompanied a friend on an audition of the Yamaha 463, Yamaha NS 8390 and Yamaha NSP 60 combo suggested by Prakash and its good. Not very musical but quite good for movies. The advantage is you'll get FS and not satellites like with other HTIBs. FS available with Onkyo HTIBs cost way more. If you can up your budget go with this Yamaha combo or else go with the Onkyo 5105.

Go for bandridge HDMI cable its around 1.2K and VFM.

If you want better one gor for DAC or Profigold(2.2K).

Thanks,
Prakash

Thanks Prakash!

What cables should be used for the speaker connections? I have heard not-so-good stories of the cables that usually come with the system.

Any idea on their availability in Chennai?

Regards

DAC is quiet popular in this forum. I think it is available for 45rs per meter though i am not sure.

If you go to any multibrand outlet, you can try bandridge. You will get 20 metres and 10 metres coil. cost would be between 1k to 1.5k.

MX cables are also good.

You can also try blue jeans cable.
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/international.htm

You have to order it online.

You can Try in Ritchie street and with some dealers there. You can use 16 or 14AWG speaker cable for yout HT.

Thanks,
Prakash.
