i have a norge 2060, wharf d 10.1 and a pioneer dv120 in a 120 sq ft room. Listen to metal and are 90% mp3s downloaded from limewire cause the cds are hard to find...
will be having about 15k to spare by the end of this month and so was wondering which would be the best investment.
was thinking about the 120gb ipod as i have close to 70gb of music now.
will an ipod sound better than the usb port of a good cdp
or will adding a sub sound better with my current setup?

your ipod should sound about as good or bad as your pioneer DVD player so no sound quality improvements to be expected from getting an ipod. Any sub for 15k will also be a heavily compromised solution.

Therefore why don't you consider getting a good source. You could get a budget CDP such as the Marantz 5003, or even a used CDP for the money. Or of course you get an outboard DAC like the Musiland Monitor 02 US. It'll cost you about 6k all told and should give you a much superior source sound both from your DVD player and also any computer you may choose to connect to it via USB (Musiland is reputed, in addition to having good DAC chips and good architecture, a superb asynchronous driver for windows that makes its performance on USB something of a standout).

The remaining 9k you can put into a piggy bank to save up for your next audio purchase.

Hi Riju

For mp3s dont bother to spend 15k on a CDP, but remember that tomorrow you may buy some CDs and you will not have a decent CDP to play it on. Better to get a FLAC player like Sansa Fuse. its battery will typically die out after two or three years I heard, but you should be able to open it and replace.

We will TRY TO believe that statement. Atleast you are honest to state your sources :)

If you search around on the forum you will see that your system is as good as the worst component/source.

I would suggest in investing in a CDP for about 10K (consider used as well) and remaining 5K on good quality music CDs or downloads from hi-res sites (paid of course). It will be a better bang for the buck and you will notice an improvement in sound quality.

the musiland thing and the flac player sounds interesting... but wonder if they're available in gangtok or even in calcutta... the high res paid sites doesnt sound convincing though...

right if you already have a DVDP then dont bother spending 15K on a portable player. I missed out on your existing setup.

Thanks Psycho.

the musiland can be reliably bought from ebay. the seller i linked to is a top-rated seller also, so you shouldn't have any trouble buying from him. The good thing with an outboard DAC like the musiland is that it will improve the sound of your MP3s, and when you get CDs and pop them into your pioneer DVDP, it will make them sound good as well.
