16:9 option in airtel dth not working

hi i was going through the airtel stb settings today..and the ratio was set to
4:3 i changed it to 16:9 but i am still not getting 16:9 on my lcd still have to use 16:9 aspect on my lcd to fill the screen if i select original it goes back to 4:3 even when the stb is on 16:9.....

I also have the same option in DishTV STB. My relatives have TataSky and the option exists on TS STB also. The option does not work. None of the DTH STB's support 16:9 even if the option exists in the STB menu.

The STB is usually manufactured by an OEM that caters to the worldwide market. That is why the option exists - and also for future compatibility.

Considering, that all channels in India are broadcast in 4:3 aspect ratio, the '16:9 / 4:3 aspect ratio' setting, in Indian DTH boxes, is totally irrelevant. This 'feature' has no effect on the picture showing on your television, irrespective of whether your television is 4:3 or 16:9. Actually, SD (standard definition) channels are broadcast in 16:9 ratio only in Europe and even there not not all channels are in 16:9. Thus, this feature in 'standard definition' set-top boxes is only relevant to Europe. By the way, the channel has a trigger signal, that informs the set-top box, that it is being broadcast in 16:9.
With HD, the story is different and such a setting has a definite funtion. Therefore this feature does serve a purpose in HD set-top boxes, but only for those channels that are being broadcast in HD. Bottom line, stop worrying about this feature and spend your time complaining about the horrible picture quality of Airtel or for that matter, all DTH service providers.

PS: This 'feature' works, just as it should, on the 'Sun Direct HD' set-top box.

You mean, improve the picture quality? Nope. Remember the old adage "gargbage in, garbage out"? Well, that still applies. Because the original picture quality is horribly pixelated and has tons of compression artifacts, no scaler can make it better. In fact, all upscalers will only make it worse by highlighting the weaknesses of the picture even more.

I think that in a span of 2-3 months all the major players will be moving towards HD as the Commonwealth Games are to be broadcast on HD. Then we will see the prices tumbling.

You can imagine the sun HD Box was sold at 9999/- without any subscription and nowadays its only 7500/- including 1 year subscription. (well for exchange of any DTH)

DTH will add more to the picture quality and I think we will do away with upscalers then.

the black top and down strip is comming on crt tv with aspect ratio setting of 4:3 and also 16:9 while viewing some program and then changes to full screen for some ads and even some ads do have the black strips on top and down in an Airtel reception. if i zoom the tv screen then some program gets cut from top and down.
Do this black strip will go off in an 26" LED LCD without effecting the P.

tats very normal.. and the black strip wont go off.. as the settings wont change even if you change settings from 16:9 or 4:3

however once to shift to lcd/plasma.. u can use 16:9 options is tv itself and it will adjust.but the black bars will stay.. u wont find black bars in discovery .. however V,MTV they are there.. .. thats how the transmission is.
