Few major reasons for loosing popularity US 3d Viewership.

3-D viewership - less than a hundredth of audience
Only 2 per cent of TVs in the US are able to show 3-D programming
Expensive to produce - many wonder whether it's worth the extra cost.
Still expensive 3d blu ray player and disks
Expensive cable's bundled packages
Non consistent 3d effects
3d tv and glasses costs more. 3d tv buyers treat 3d as an added features by not buying costly glasses
Consumers associate value with screen size and very few other features.
Few people get nausea when 3d watching
Larger people just don't like 3-D than those who like it

The 3D TV will continue to be a niche market, unless a method to enjoy it in life like size and without strain is invented. Presently, although the effect of 3D is good, the size of the TV imposes limitations. Not every body can afford a 3D projector now.

Along with the lack of 3D content, the very high cost of the BR disk also a dampner.
