4 CDP's

Hi Ajay

Check the link below for a used Accuphase CDP...thought it might interest you...

FS : ACCUPHASE DP-500 CDP.

Thanks for the link!Looks almost new and at a decent price,which is outside my budget at the moment.I had asked my cousin in uk to hunt around and he came up with a demo unit of Esoteric SA 10 priced at 1300 .I am exploring options for buying and transporting it to India.Have you got your speakers from UK?Perhaps you can guide me on the packing,shipping,custom's.Will look forward to your post or pm.

Hi Ajay

I have not bought the speakers yet but plan to before January end. I have asked my brother in law to get them for me. Hopefully the dealer will pack them in the original boxes and it should come safely. Since my brother in law is a UK citizen, it should hopefully not attract duties.....Keeping my fingers crosssed.....

A CD Player should be relatively easy to bring to India. If you have someone coming over from the Uk, you could request them to bring one for you...

@panditji
Hope you get your Harbeth's soon.

More on the Esoteric SA10
Excerpt from this link:RECENT AUDIO NOTES
"After evaluating and living with many of the Esoteric models (X03SE, P05/D05, P03/D03), it seemed time to review the entry level player to determine just how it stacks up against its more costly siblings. While Esoteric offers superb performance and build quality at all price points, there is a definite sonic benefit by going to the more expensive models. The SA-10 retails for $3,500, which is significantly less than half of the X03SE (now $9,500).
The SA-10 is beautifully built, no surprises here as this is the Esoteric hallmark. It also performs at a very high level given its cost, but it is distinctly inferior to the X03 SE, and not comparable to the Esoteric separates. Now for the details...
The SA-10 retains the basic sound of the X03 SE. It is very immediate, detailed and transparent. No rolled off highs or smoothing over of details (characteristic of other units such as the Marantz Sa 7 and 11). Most of the information on the source material is reproduced cleanly and accurately. Without access to the X03 SE or the Esoteric separates, the SA-10 would satisfy most listeners and all listeners who have not heard the state of the art players. Its errors are those of omission. Consequently, it is not apparent what is missing until it is heard.
By moving up to the X03SE, the improvements revolve around weight and body. The 03 sounds ballsier, gutsier with more flesh on the bones. Midbass has more substance and the harmonics of all instruments and voices are more complete. The SA-10 is slightly threadbare by comparison. The other sonic area of difference lies in the soundstage. While the SA-10 throws an open window on the sound, the X03 SE expands upon that window and virtually eliminates it. Images are larger and the wall boundaries of the listening room expand.
At its price point, the SA-10 stands out. It is constructed to a very high standard and is overall sonically superior to its competition. While it cannot compete with the far more expensive players in the Esoteric line, it is highly recommended* if $3,500 is the limit to one's budget."

Singapore Sling:
Ayre CX 7e/4600 SGD/Norman Audio
Esoteric SA50/6500 SGD/Absolute Sound.
The SA 10 seems to be history.
Is no longer 'being carried ' by the dealer.
Well good for me.As the tide moves away from stripped down
cdp's to feature rich cdp's,my dream of possesing an Esoteric SA10/
Ayre CX 7e/Accuphase DP 400 will become more affordable.Since
I discovered that Meridian GO6.2 has a switch mode power supply,
it is no longer on my wishlist.

Ajay

Why don't you search the used forums for the CDPs you are looking at. Try searching the forums below depending on whether you have relatives/friends in those countries who would be willing to carry the CDP for you:

the Echo Loft - Hifi . Audio . Music . Forums . Classifieds . Singapore - singapore
review33.com - Hongkong
hifi4sale.com - Malaysia
HiFiForSale.Com - accessories, audiophile, free advertising - UK

I am sure you will find a number of high end CDPs at very good prices. You can also take a trip to any of the east asian countries especially Singapore and Hongkong as they have all the high end equipment available there mostly around a block/building. Hongkong hifi is crazy and I am sure you will find used esoteric and accuphase there as they both are Japanese whose products have a good reputation in Hongkong...

A quick aside from the main focus of this thread.Need some instant advise and I did not feel it was neccessary to start a few thread.
I have been exploring options for providing safe,uniform power and protection to my cdp/pre/power amp.
Need something which can handle a 1.5 kva peak power consumption,provide voltage between 230-240 volts consistently
with 1 % variation,spike protection,RFI/EMI filters and Isolation.

Options:
1 APC SURT 2000UXI.2 KVA Online UPS.30K.Provides all the above and also a 15 minute back up.Since current is converted from a/c to d/c and back into a/c,
no chance of a spike or surge passing through to the equipment.
No transformer,therefore no noise.Local dealer and service.Negatives-has two cooling fans-which I will be auditioning tomorrow for their 'nuisance' factor.
http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SURT2000UXI

2 Vertex 2KVA Servo Stabilizer +Isolation Transformer.App 20K+.Positives-No fan noise.Negatives-No power back up.
Slower correction time with basic spike protection,which may allow a surge in power beyond 240 to be passed on to the equipment.
Transformer noise would require an Isolation transformer.Dealer/service from Chennai.

3 Krykard Same as Vertex .Price cheaper by 4-5K.Service from Delhi.

4 Local Servo Stabilizer+Isolation Transformer built in Chandigarh.12K.Local service.Negatives-Quality?

5 CVT? Negatives -Noisy.

Ajay, somehow I feel you should start another thread. Your threads always bloom into a treasure chest of info on the particular topic and I am sure the members here would love one on this as well.
I have heard that the online UPS would be the best bet for this purpose.

@iaudio
I'm taking your advise and reposting it on a new thread in Audio Video Accessories :)
So please all fresh responses on the new thread!

@Panditji
The Ayre is almost the same price as the Esoteric in UK.I am going a little slow on the cdp,because I've blown that cash on the amp upgrade.Also looking at a bit of power protection.
But please keep posting any links you come across for lightly used Accuphase,Esoteric and Ayre cdp's.:)

Consequences of upgrading to the 4B SST!
I am progressively moving the speakers more and more away from the backwall...and the Living Room furniture is gradually being pushed forward too!::)
Less than 3 feet away from the back,the speakers seem to be suffocating.Currently 5 feet from the backwall,12 feet between them,half inch toe in,16 feet from my listening position,playing REM's Loosing My Religion at 1 o clock volumes,they sound sensational.Deep,Wide and High soundstage.Next best thing to a Live concert! I wish I coulld move them another 2 feet feet forward!

This is even better (allegedly), expensive (definitely) and futuristic (probably) and based on the VRDS

Since
I discovered that Meridian GO6.2 has a switch mode power supply,
it is no longer on my wishlist.

All Meridians have a SMPS - they always have.
My 808i.2 too runs of a 'switch mode power supply' !
Even Chord runs all its gear off a smps.

My opinion [humble] is that what you use is not important.
Rather how it is used & what result can be extracted from it;;
That is all that matters.
RESULT.

Yes;

Esoteric Transport.

We have a player in North India - it replaced my old Cary CD/SACD 306 Pro...
It is a good machine. Superb VFM as of now - as good as it gets @ a super competitive price. Cheaper than EMM / dCS / Esoteric [serious ones - i.e.] !
:ohyeah:

Since my next CDP upgrade should in all probability be the last one,I want to get it right in terms of performance,reliability and sturdiness.
For a moment if we focus on the moving part - the transport-then Esoteric and Accuphase are clearly better as they design and build their own transport.
Ayre and Meridian use cd/dvd-rom drives,probably sourced from Teac.
Is a cd/dvd-rom drive a good idea?
Which other CDP's have a good transport,front loading,top loading,slot loading?
In a long haul situation,is it better to go for an aluminium rather than a plastic tray?
What are the attributes of a good CD transport.Less jitter?More isolation?
Should the CDP casing be an all metal,no plastic affair?
What are the attributes of a good laser lens?
Should cd's be cleaned before playback to prevent dust from collecting on the laser pick up?
Which is a better option a one box or a two box cd player?What are the benefits of having a separate transport and processor?
Smps or Toroidal Transformer?Does a switch mode power supply lack the slam and punch of it's big brother?

Smps or Toroidal Transformer?Does a switch mode power supply lack the slam and punch of it's big brother?

Why is a Toroidal a 'bigger' brother ?

Slam / Punch are they dependent on the power supply ???

Why has the 808i.2 been awarded the best 1 box CD Player by TAS & Stereophile in 2009 / 2010 ? It has a SMPS Power Supply.

The punch line sir, I seriously request you, do not go by 'tech specs'
[I did that for a long long time] - we all need to move op & up. Go by your ear - listen & decide. Whatever 'sounds' good is what is needed. Forget the Make / Brand etc. Just buy a player that makes you enjoy your music.....

p.s. Have you ever seen the inside of a Mertonome CD Player / Transport ? It looks so well built, you would buy it just for that [I did] a good product, but soon it was replaced....[that was a 3 chassis cd playback] :D
