4 reference hifi systems [spkrs+amps] to audition

I think its a matter of preference. There are people who only listen to headphones. Sound experience is very different.

Hi anm,

Welcome to my house in Bangalore for an audition of Acoustic Portrait system

Regards,
Venu

About the best all-in-one (I mean ... speakers, pre and power amp from one source ie. Acoustic Portrait) that I have heard. Venu had a Pioneer DVDp whose digi-out had been fed to a DIY DAC. The entire thing ... just within your budget too.

I do like the audiophile meets where 20-30 ppl come together, however I would like to keep "these" sessions limited to max 2-3 ppl. It becomes difficult for the host. And too many combinations mean nothing in focus.

Also - let us assume budget is bigger, I would just get a little slow on buying. Also, even if I am tied to a budget, I would like to listen to systems that cost more, so that I know what I am loosing out when I make a purchase.

While your budget is entirely your business, I think you should still mention your absolute ceiling so that the recommendations remain manageable. Also, having a floating budget can be dangerous thing. Ask me :)

I started my quest for an audio system with a total budget of 50K and was speeding towards a KEF300/RTi A1 paired with a Denon/Marantz when I made the "mistake" of visiting ARN with RoC. Pretty soon, my budget started creeping up and now I have stuff costing MUCH more than 50K. It's all little bits and pieces that get you.

"Oh, the upgraded amp is only 15K more. If you're spending 75K, might as well spend 1L and get the upgrade"

"Since you are looking at so-and-so product, why don't you also try so-and-so. It's within your budget." This generally means it's out of your budget :)

So, just for sanity's sake, please mention a ceiling budget else this thread will go astray IMO.

I would say let me hear some good systems and then make up my mind. I may end up with even lower budget stuff that pleases my ears. But as I am taking an approach of building it slowly, like Asit and Ajay124 here, I think I should be able to make it to a much bigger budget over a year or two.
First step of course would be to get the speakers, then amp/ source. But before going for speakers I would like to see how to best pair it with an amp, and then set my eyes on the amp.

You are right- if you are not in hurry , go slow in building the system. will save money . And try to accomodate things in first shot even if you have to stretch your budget a bit that will also prevent waste of money in quick upgrade. Keep a good budget for well recorded music collection - that will make a big difference and would be a heavy investment.

Cheers
Pratim

By the way anm you can have a audition of amitnoida's system. He has usher speakers , leben amp and ayon cd player. Heard good things regarding the cdp. I have heard his amp and speaker combination.

Welcome anytime, just call and confirm. Weekdays after 6.30 - 7pm. Weekends, need approval from hi command ;). Btw, if I remember your music listening preference from your last visit, it is a lot of hindi film music, esp. old. A very revealing system MAY leave you disheartened, unless you have a lot of vinyl, tho' I have some mannada recordings that are to die for.

Another input (I do not know how many will agree); the monsoons MAY not be the best time to audition. With the hi humidity levels, the air would be 'heavier' leading to presentation differences, unless it is a desiccated room. Of course, when you eventually own the system, they will need to perform all the twelve months.

Btw, there is a new option emerging, in a pro-audio direction. You MAY want to consider this too. Some of us are. Reasonable, and hi quality. This is for the amps and speakers. You would still need to work on the source.

I pretty much agree with the Captain in what has been penned above.
What I'd like to add is as under:-

* There is no such thing as a 'reference system'. That, IMHO, in itself is a very vaguely subjective or subjectively vague term (as the csae may be). the only true reference system is OEM, ie the pair of ears that we came with and how it connects to our heart and head.

* Next, I'd like to share with you what I would've gone in for, had I been in your place.

- A custom made amplifier or a pre-owned one, preferably with a separate preamp (as source selector and/or volume + tone control only), two 'dual monoblock' power amps capable of bi-amping and (maybe) a valve-based preamp at a later stage.

- A line-array of mid-woofers+tweeters OR of full range single-drivers comprising of at least 15 pairs of each from floor to ceiling.

- An active crossover unit to be connected between the source and the power amps (in case of a single source and no preamp in the chain) OR between the preamp and the dual monos if one uses multiple sources.

- An 18" (or more) custom-made sealed subwoofer and two rear surround speakers at a later stage, for HT use, only if need be.

I shall be undertaking such a project shortly. you can PM me if you choose to know more and/or hop aboard this wagon. I have finalised the amplification part of it already by taking the pre-owned route (for now) which I shall substitute for custom-made in due course should the need arise/be felt.

I do hope this helps.

Regards

thanks Ashok, you are absolutely right. Thanks to monsoon, my travel time has increased from 45min in the morning to 1.5 hours. Traffic has suddenly gone worse for no big reason. I will probably schedule it in Aug or later.

Dilli - I want to audition AMITNOIDA's system but for that he has to let me in :)
