I pretty much agree with the Captain in what has been penned above.
What I'd like to add is as under:-
* There is no such thing as a 'reference system'. That, IMHO, in itself is a very vaguely subjective or subjectively vague term (as the csae may be). the only true reference system is OEM, ie the pair of ears that we came with and how it connects to our heart and head.
* Next, I'd like to share with you what I would've gone in for, had I been in your place.
- A custom made amplifier or a pre-owned one, preferably with a separate preamp (as source selector and/or volume + tone control only), two 'dual monoblock' power amps capable of bi-amping and (maybe) a valve-based preamp at a later stage.
- A line-array of mid-woofers+tweeters OR of full range single-drivers comprising of at least 15 pairs of each from floor to ceiling.
- An active crossover unit to be connected between the source and the power amps (in case of a single source and no preamp in the chain) OR between the preamp and the dual monos if one uses multiple sources.
- An 18" (or more) custom-made sealed subwoofer and two rear surround speakers at a later stage, for HT use, only if need be.
I shall be undertaking such a project shortly. you can PM me if you choose to know more and/or hop aboard this wagon. I have finalised the amplification part of it already by taking the pre-owned route (for now) which I shall substitute for custom-made in due course should the need arise/be felt.
I do hope this helps.
