Why are the screenshots horizontally squished? Although, the picture being horizontally squished instead of being vertically squished as they are with upscaled SD (FAKE HD) channels, is a sign that these might actually be REAL HD channels.

Yes their logo also says so and seems they are in 16:9. Star Plus HD should get broadcasted by TS HD soon and if they find space to squeeze more channels, they may bring more probably after the World Cup.

I would love to see Star World HD and Star Movies HD soon.

They better have a inhouse facility where they convert SD to HD or else it will be just like the normal upscaled ones. BTW can anybody comment on channels available in HD on Videocon's DTH? They have Travel XP, HD d2h movie, HD d2h movie, Times now, discovery and NG. Is the quality same as other DTH?

Cheers

Just curious, do you work in DTH industry ? I see you writing only about DTH boxes and offers not AV stuff...

This looks stretched. Is it upscaled?

It's an anamorphic picture. i.e 16:9 Aspect ratio sent on an PAL Signal. you need to anamorphically resize (widescreen) and it'll look fine. you'll notice the capture size are the exact PAL resolution (720x576). just needs to be resized to 854 x 576 cheers.

I think, it needs to be resized to 1024 x 576 cheers for 16:9. :)

Nope.. there are other considerations. you'll need to take into account PAR and DAR (look it up :-) )

HDTV signals have square pixels as do VGA et al. NTSC and PAL pixels are not square.

this is a bit off topic, so pm me if you need any more clarity on this.

In other words Non-HD 16:9 - basically what we get on Anamorphic DVD, right?

absolutely.. as far as this screen grab goes.

it's a bit complicated to get an HD screen grab, so this guy may have grabbed the SD out (composite / component) of an HD stb. on the basis of the screenies, there's no reason to question the OP.

of course a simpler, less elegant solution is to use a digicam to capture the output on an HDTV. :-)

Star plus HD which is an upscaled channel has been broadcast from some time, is this different. Since the serials going to be shot in HD going forward I suppose only then will they be in True HD.

there was news article about it somewhere, where the head of programming of some channel was talking about the move to HD. it's a bit complicated, as most things need to be upgraded changed. so they are doing this in a calibrated fashin

to begin with you need HD cameras, unless you shoot on film, in which case your telecine stuff needs to be HD.

then the entire non linear editing suite needs to be HD capable (more RAM, more more CPU horsepower and more Hard disk space, plus the need HD tape decks. x multiples for each serial. when you add that all up, it's pretty prohibitive to switch to HD. and that's only on the video front. more complication if add in multichannel audio

especially so, when the content is dubious. (please excuse this sentence if it hurts anyone.. but if we watch saas-bahu crap in SD, should we spend more to watch the same crap in HD?)

it;s much simpler to switch our movie channels to HD. the other HD content I look forward to is the news channels & specialised content - Discovery turbo; the history channel, Travel living.
