For rips, HDCP not required. it's already pirated.;)

Ok.. Then that solves the issue for the OP.. He was more concerned abt not able to view 4K video if the AVR isn't HDCP 2.2..

Rips yes 4k will play without any issues, but HDR will not play as the avr does not pass through HDR.

Am not aware of 4K and its features.... But, does every 4K movie in BR Rip / Disc, has HDR?..

No not all the movies are in HDR, some of them are available like Martian, Dunkirk, Bosch (tv show) and many others. Now when playing a HDR signal to the avr, it will not output the video as the avr does not support hdr passtrough.

Thanks for that piece of info.. So any 4K video that doesn't have HDR, whether old (or) new AVR should be able to pass through..

If the 4K video has HDR, then the old AVR will not pass it, but the new AVR would pass through it..

Yes any 4k video which is free of any digital rights protection will play via old avr but again will be limited to the avr's functionalities which are based on the HDMI specifications i.e, HDMI 2.0. As HDMI 2.0 supports only up to 8 bit colour, HDR videos will not be able to play as they are 10 or 12 bit colour.

These are the two places it will lack. Protected videos & HDR. There may be more developments as per the specification of HDMI 2.1, which may be available in the newer avr's or upcoming ones which includes even 8k pass through.

Now there are devices available which can be put in between the video player device (Ex. Blu ray player hdcp 2.2) and the avr (old), which eliminates the digital rights protection and plays original 4k blu ray content. This is one method to overcome one part. For HDR there is no other solution, other than to upgrade.
