A Hotter Future Is Certain, but How Hot Is Up to Us.

40% of people willfully choose to be ignorant.

We all have a place in our lives where we look the other way and pretend everything is fine. It's a built-in excuse to act selfishly.

Al Gore once said we need to bring down coal burning to generate electricity by 60% by 2025. It seems it has gone up by 30% instead.

That’s a sad indicator of the state of affairs.
Trump openly promised to revive coal mining in the US in his election campaign.
in Indiya auctions for new coal mines are continuing unabated as a significant source of our electricity is from thermal generation plants.
We continue to be dependent on huge coal imports from Australia and elsewhere.
Forest areas are being denotified (no more protection) for mining activities.
We consumers are unlikely to tolerate even a day without power
Environment, climate, pollution are not even discussed by our politicians (no commitments) in election rhetoric and speeches. Even as Dilli and other cities are choking under a thick and dangerous smog.
We don’t, (or have no way) of demanding that this is discussed by candidates and parties and in parliament. Or set targets, alternative energy source investments in the longer term for phased changeover.
But the good news is children and young people are much more aware than older generations. The number of older adults bursting crackers during Diwali is much higher than children and young people from what I observed last year.….
Older adults (us) have the money, power and responsibility to decide and act now, not children and young people.

several decades ago we had a green revolution (led by Norman Borlaug and MS. Swaminathan and co) . It’s time for a Energy revolution?

Actually some of the government policies are one aspect which need introspection. As individuals we too are guilty of contributing to the pollution.
Conveniences such as online ordering which is a regular activity have increased the usage of plastics enormously be it food, clothing etc.

Dear all,
Can you please post your electrical energy consumption units?
Mine is 100-125 units for 8m and peaks above 160 units during summers when using 3 star rated AC.
Other appliances - LG WM BLDC Motor 5 star
Fridge 4 star
Fans BLDC
4' LED batten 36W
Light use Class AB amp for critical listening( 30W-100W depending upon volume level) and class D (<8W) for streaming and YouTube
Location Mumbai suburbs 2BHK, MSEB

Thank you for flagging this aspect (one among many) that can be addressed through individual lifestyle choices we make.
Just to keep in mind it’s not a matter of comparing energy use across households. Cooler places like Bangalore will see less use of ACs than hotter places. Colder places will have more energy spent on heating. But I get your point. It is a fact that the energy use per person is rising in the world, as is the power use per person. This increase is not uniform worldwide, rather energy use per person is rising more rapidly in some countries than in others.

There are some online resources for those who want to do an audit of personal energy consumption and carbon footprint measure. This has more indicators like commutes, travel incl air travel etc.
Here is an extensive data sheet: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/per-capita-energy-use

I have tried my best for max energy conservation , meanwhile ensuring minimal impact on day to day modern city life , 100 unit is the lowest one can go for an average nuclear family.
Electric geyser is the worst offender
At least we all should try to turn main switch OFF/ unplug and avoid keeping devices on standby 24X7
eg Mobile charger 0.33W - when not charging or a Laptop adaptor under 2W
Fun fact- More than a decade ago Sheila Dixit, when she was Delhi CM had advised citizens to use less electricity , while she herself was having 32 ACs in her sarkari bunglow, in short don't expect from politicians or babus
BTW A pet cat living in Australia has a 4X carbon footprint than an average lower income Indian

The theee R’s is a good general guiding principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to live by. But the consumer lifestyle promoted by our current global economic systems is tough to fight on a scale that makes a difference quickly. So many countries are dependent on production, FDI, exports, tourism, and of course in country sales to keep their supply chains and commerce running. All of this have huge implications on energy consumption, and consequently on the climate. Individual action needs to be adopted at a scale that’s large enough to make an impact and needs to go viral for mass adoption.

On a side note i cant think of how to even change the way things are going on. EV lithium ion batteries are the products of enslaved child labour in Congo, working in mines with no protection protocols in place with extremely hot conditions with no oxygen supply. Cobalt. EVs also are blood stained in nature. Nothing comes in easy with such population explosion. One man's profit is another's loss or even tragedy. And people are even worried about diminishing women fertility ratio. Catch 22 really. Internal combustion engines, thermal power generation, huge chemical industries, deforrestation, cultivable land gone for sand quarries or brick production and excessive hunting and fishing. We are mere pawns in the game played by the power and might of human capitalistic eco system. We pay for water already(RO). Our future generations will pay for oxygen. And the one after that will be sailing like Kevin Costner in search of land in Water world.

Open Planet recently released its first collection focused on India

“Climate science has a communication problem. Abstract data, figures, and projections into the distant future can be tough to comprehend. Without effective storytelling tools to convey the severity of the crisis and what’s at stake if we don’t act, it can be difficult to motivate the broader public to advocate for change.

To bridge that gap the new digital library contains a growing collection of climate and nature footage available for free use. Open Planet currently has some 4,500 clips that travel around the globe, from Bird Island off the Georgian coast to Brazil’s Jamari River to Pangti Village in western India. Documenting animals, plants, landscapes, and more, the footage is diverse in subject matter and captures visual evidence of some of the most pressing issues facing the world today“

Yawn....

And that’s the biggest problem 🙂
Not at all. This climate thing is over hyped. It's a biggest revenue churner for the corrupt. Ganga river cleaning is a classic example. Another example is Mithi river cleaning in Mumbai. Its all a very well orchasted plan. There will be couple of news items every where about climate disaster and the following week they will allocate millions of dollars for resolution so that public don't shout. Even after spending tons of money the status of the rivers are the same. Who are the climate advocates fooling?

Now as I am writing there is a unseasonal heavy rainfall happening right now at Thane :)-
