Dear Members,

The above topic which deserves most attention, is ignored by members more often than not.

Though based on simple principles in Physics, it appears to be a complex subject akin to rocket science, especially to the new members. Having said that, even though one has basic ideas on the underlying principles, it takes a thorough understanding of the subject and years of hands on experience to perfect the techniques involved in mastering the subject. Getting the required information from the web and the forum in bits and pieces is doing more harm than good simply because of the amount of misinformation that is floating around on the information super highway. Moreover lack of credibility of the information thoroughly confuses those who seek knowledge.

It is felt that conducting a webinar to interested members in a structured manner would be a great way to impart knowledge to members seeking it. We have some gurus on the subject like Mazher B Jaffer, Khushrau Jilla, Sanjay Durani, Manoj P amongst others who are thorough on the subject and some of them have been guiding members seeking help on the subject.

Soliciting members to register their interest on this thread so that this idea can be taken forward.

Great idea!!
I think we can all be educated to varying extant by folks who have hands-on and field experience.
Cheers,
Raghu

Hello Capt.
The idea sounds interesting and the exercise may turn out to be useful. I am a little dated however and don't quite get how a webinar will function. Will it mean logging in at a given time or something; would it require skype (I don't intend to have skype). It is not clear how it would operate. A seminar would of course be better but it would limit us to members in the big cities. Bangalore, Bombay and Delhi. How would a member in a smaller town be able to participate,

Thanks for the initiative, but do elaborate.
Regards

A webinar as the name suggests, is a web based seminar. You would need a computer and broadband connection to participate. Check the following links where it is explained better:

Capt.

A webinar/seminar kinda implies real time participation. With a diverse group, like the one on HFV, it may become ineffective transfer of knowledge.
Just like tackling sound in a room, some of the info will get absorbed, some of it will diffuse, some of it will disperse and some of it will confuse.
Also many FMs may find it difficult to grasp the science and apply it to their listening space or dedicated HT.

Here is what I propose:
You have put up 4 names; may be a few more will want to chip in.
Divide up the problem into 4 or 5 typical scenarios, say
  • Small/large living room shared space - cuboid
  • Small/large living room shared space - L shaped or some other odd shape
  • Small dedicated HT - cuboid
  • Medium dedicated HT - cuboid
  • Large dedicated HT - cuboid
Each one of our experts can host one scenario in detail with collective inputs from other experts. It need not be a live talk, even a recorded video or simple slideshow will do.
This allows for the presenter to prepare the presentation for a targeted scenario. I have seen some of the illustrations provided by Sanjay that are so lucid, that one can easily relate to it immediately.
Each scenario can delve upon topics such as:
  • Speaker/amp combinations (SPL/watts etc)
  • Size and placement options (FS/BS/Sats/VoG)
  • Subs (1 or multiple)
  • Ideal viewing/listening positions
  • Do's and don'ts of acoustics treatment (when possible)
  • Common mistakes and simple post implementation tweaks
The video/slide-deck can be hosted on HFV and made available only to members. Future questions can be posted on each thread for clarification, if presenter willing they will be answered in an appropriate manner.

I have not made any assumptions to the room dimensions and length of presentable material. It is the realm of the experts.
All of this assumes the gurus are comfortable in educating noobs like me :)
Suggestions/criticisms to this format?

Cheers,
Raghu

@Raghuppb, since I don't consider myself an expert, I didn't make an attempt to structure the event and wanted to leave it to the experts to do it as they consider fit. Nevertheless, I appreciate that you've made an earnest effort to give it a direction.

I'm glad at the response of members here. Hope more members join and hope the experts would take it forward from here.

I am totally in. I think it is a brilliant initiative.

How do we register for the event? Tentative dates?

I feel a Live session on YouTube could prove useful. All one needs is an internet connection and no other software on a computer or smart device. Those who miss it due to various reasons, can view the YouTube video at their convenience. I have seen Web Ex links becoming inaccessible after awhile.

nitty gritty ban be worked out if we get sufficient participation. As of now, we are a dozen guys.

While I agree with you, Youtube means the event has to be held at a specific location and a video recording of it has to be made and uploaded. I don't think that's feasible because of different geographical locations of participants and the experts. Don't you think so?
