Airtel DTH - Helpless!

Hi Venky
I am receiving HD channels after sat migration
I am on ses now after 21 days of hot pursuit with airtel guys
I hav added MOviesnowHD Dischd
Maybe u wait till sat migration and u'll get DD5.1 only thru Coax/Optical (check STB)
No HDMI audio in DD5.1
My Onkyo HTS 3300 connected as follows
Airtel stb --HDMI --SonyLCD for video -- TV audio disabled
AirtelSTB --Coax--OnkyoHTS3300

Ok so 5.1 audio after dish realignment huh? That sounds alright but can this really make a difference in the sound format? Wow. If it does, then it's great. Are you getting 5.1 audio in all your HD channels?

I'd like to know how it is for ESPN HD / Star Cricket HD too, which they are offering now (as of last night) at Rs. 50 + tax.

I GUESS THE ISSUES WITH AIRTEL WILL NEVER DIE DOWN.

have been using airtel for almost 3 years now but the service has never been good. till date cant even find a good replacement to them (as all views are subjective, i feel)

i had request for the sat change some 20 days back and now i am even least bothered if they give me a service or not. just feel that i am living is the days of DD again, which means that i dont have any choice. no ones better then the other.

god save us from these guys... i think the cable guys were still better in terms of services atleast.

hi guys. i have bought airtel dth hd recently... unfortunately there is no 5.1 sound through hdmi to my onkyo avr. gives just stereo.. i read some posts here advising to connect through optical or coaxial.. pls tell me which one is better... my doubt is as there is already stereo sound passing through hdmi, will there be any weird(echoing) sound produced due to 2 sources(hdmi and optical)... i'm not a techie in all these stuffs:D so pls clarify...
also my airtel hd gives pathetic signal quality - just around 40 to 50%.strength is fine though. is anyone else facing this?

STB - Digital coaxial cable - Onkyo AVR
STB - HDMI cable - TV (mute the tv volume)

Try this method and let us know the results.

It looks like that both Airtel & TS are using incorrect and misleading claims to promote their HD services. When Airtel launched its HD services, they proclaimed 7.1 Dolby Digital+ support on all their ads. TS also did the same with their TataSky+ HD DVR.

Now a 7.1 audio feed can only be provided using HDMI, while both these companies seem to only output stereo LPCM using HDMI and to get regular dolby digital, one needs to use a coax/optical cable. With TS the situation is more interesting, the regular HD box supports DD over HDMI and they make no 7.1 audio claims for that box.

I think we should form a group and contact advertisement standards council about the problems with the various HD services. Dish TV announces 30 HD channels, where most are upscaled HD channels. Airtel advertises 7.1 surround sound and people face problems even configuring 5.1 surround sound on their setups. Same is the situation with TataSky+ HD Box. In addition, most DTH providers claim DVD quality video and CD quality sound, while the PQ on SD channels is closer to of a VCD than from DVDs on many DTH services.

I'm with you 100% man. Agree fully to whatever you have said. Something definitely needs to be done about this.

There is a programme on Bloomberg UTV, conducted by Vivek Law which takes up consumer grievances. The programme name is Fight for your Rights or something like that. Should we try something on these lines? The tag line for this programme is "Are you suffering as a consumer? Fight for your rights".

7.1 sound is a hoax. Hardly anyone is getting even 5.1 sound on Airtel HD. Except for 1 person who posted positively about this on this thread or another one. NGC HD on Airtel HD DOES NOT give me 5.1 sound. Tested it multiple times with my coaxial out from the STB to my Yam 459 AVR.

Added to all this is the satellite migration and the introduction of new HD channels. I am sure these new channels also will not provide 5.1 sound.

The technician visited my place and re-aligned the antenna to new satellite. When I asked him about 5.1 audio and new channels list , he said he had no clue and asked me to speak with customer service again. .

Later I called up the customer service and explained the problem , ironically the service desk guy had no clue. He said another technician will come to look for the problem and repair the box.

STB - Digital coaxial cable - Onkyo AVR
STB - HDMI cable - TV (mute the tv volume)

Try this method and let us know the results.

My TV is already in mute volume.
Let me tell you my setup.
STB hdmi output is connected to onkyo avr since there is an up-conversion feature(hd ready to full hd) in it. simultaneously avr hdmi output to the TV(up converted signal and amplified sound).. i have 7.1 channel speakers already with the avr anyway.. so i keep my tv volume mute since i feel 7 channel speakers produce good enough sound compared to the tv speakers.. so no direct connection between tv and stb. main reason for stb hdmi to avr is that i don't want to miss the up-conversion feature... it's really good actually..
so u recommend co axial ahead of optical right? since i have to procure either optical or coaxial...

I think airtel box comes only with digital coaxial option. There is no optical/toslink cable port, atleast in my box.:)

Hi guys

Venkat here from Chennai. Just got the dish realignment done, and I am now getting NGC HD in superb 5.1. My AVR now shows the signal as Dolby Digital in its display! What an experience. 5.1 sound seems to be there throughout the channel ... even the ads in between the programs are all in 5.1. Superb. Now it's more like HD. :-)

I am thinking of adding Movies NOW HD, Discovery HD World etc using that package for 40 bucks a month plus tax. Will post back once I have checked out those new HD channels.

I can't believe the dish realignment has made a difference between stereo and DD 5.1 sound. Super. I hope we get 5.1 sound in all the existing and new HD channels that they add.

Is your avr changing by default to 5.1 when you change the channel to ngc hd ? or you have to use avr remote ?

Hi guys

One more update:

I have added the HD Chota Pack which includes NGC HD, Discovery HD and Movies Now HD. All these channels are with 5.1 sound! Fantastic to say the least. Picture quality is also quite nice on the Disc HD and Movies Now HD channels.

Kittu: Yes, my Yam 459 AVR shows DOLBY DIGITAL on the display when I change to any of the above mentioned HD channels. With the STB off, it defaults to PRO LOGIC on the display. Same when I play DVDs with DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1. When I pause the DVD player, it defaults to PRO LOGIC on the amp display. When I play the DVD, depending on the soundtrack, it shows either DTS or DOLBY DIGITAL on the amp display.

What a difference this dish realignment has made. I am quite happy now. All the HD channels with 5.1 sound. Just watched a program called Blowdown on NGC HD with 5.1 sound. Was amazing to say the least - both the program and the sound.

The technician who came to do the dish realignment was shocked with my HT setup and was blown away by the 5.1 sound on NGC HD. When I showed him a demo of a 1080p blu ray rip of Avatar in DTS through my WDTV HD Media Player, he was speechless. I just told him that overseas, in many countries, HD channels are of this quality of picture and sound. He himself agreed that the HD channel quality in India is nothing compared to the blu ray rip I showed him.

Anyway he also said SET MAX HD would be launched shortly for the IPL cricket series coming up, and asked me to add that. He said the "surround effect would be good" on that channel. I am assuming even that channel would be with 5.1 sound then.

Another thing regarding the Airtel HD STB. There is a HDMI out and a coaxial digital out at the back. No optical out. This is for anyone who had a doubt regarding the jacks at the back of this HD STB.

Hi Kittu

This is how I have it connected now:

HDMI from HD STB --> LG Plasma
Coaxial Out from HD STB --> Yam 459 AVR

So now for SD channels, I won't turn on the amp, and will use the TV for the sound. Picture is anyway coming to the TV thru the HDMI. My PJ560 plasma has superb side mounted speakers. Has to be heard to be believed. Very good sound. Music channels sound pretty good, and even movies and documentaries - the voice has so much depth. Bass and treble are at the centre setting (zero) in the TV menu. The speakers sound even better when I increase the bass and treble.

Opted for this plasma model mainly for the sound. Picture wise, the PJ 350, 560 and 650 were exactly the same.
