I am quite new to this forum though I am an audiophile.

It is quite sad that just like any other electronics goods India has very few manufacturers. I know there are companies like Sonodyne, Audire etc. But I feel even these are not top notch as they seldom feature in the buyers guide of magazines like AV Max, WHF etc.

What do you guys think? Or am I an ignoramus who doesnt know the companies next door?

On what basis do you fell so? Lack of advertising glamour? Have you heard any Audire speakers? which ones? Why dont you listen to Audire speakers then decide?

What are you after in regards to cables or equipment and what have you auditioned so far? if its just a generalisation of the state of Indian manufacturers then you are quite wrong. Making it to AV Max or Sound and Vision is no sign of how well a company produces products - its how much money they can throw at marketing and advertising.

You may want to search on the forum if you have specific needs.

Hey Chillout dude :) Dint mean to offend anyone.
I am not saying the products of these companies are not good.
But where do they stand when compared to other international brands? And it is not all advertising glamour my friend. One look at the threads in this forum and anyone would agree.

Feel free to correct me.:D

Chillumdude, Indian products are good although they lack in fit and finish they get the job done at a low price (like a typical indian )
I believe if indian companies increase their marketing budget and use better cabinets for their products thereby increasing the cost by 100% you will change your opinion.

But dont you think fit and finish also matter a lot?
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought the materials used, their finish, how they are joined, each one of these affect the final sound that we hear.

And that too when we have design schools of international fame out here. Dont schools like NID have designers who can come up with better designs for these companies?

There are many more & I list it AFAIK. Starting from north:

Lyrita Audio - Delhi (Speakers & Amps)
Cadence - Pune (Speakers & Amps)
Accoustic Potrait - Bangalore (Speakers & Amps)
Rethm - Cochin (Speakers & Amps)
Also, there is Mr. Mickey Registrar in Pune who makes fabulous speakers.

There may be many more.

Regarding they being not reviewed in mags, well, I've read reviews of Audere, Lyrita & Mickey's equipment.

AFAIK, these guys only review those equipment who give them ad revenue. More the revenue, more reviews.

By fit and finish i mean cosmetic and visual appeal. Better visuals increase cost. Some companies like cadence take care of everything but look at the cost of their speakers, some try to increase sales volume by keeping costs low like Norge.

Audire features very regularly in the buyer's guide of AVMAX. Please look carefully.:)

AV MAX carries out reviews of Indian products, am not sure about What Hi-Fi. Norge TWR 125 MkIII were reviewed last month by AV MAX.

i'd say if anything doesn't feature in av max it's got a greater chance of being better ;) :D at most that rag is a good tool to know what's out there and get a general idea. IMHO YKK CBI CIA KGB etc etc

We are missing Lithos acoustics..Great indian speakers having their own technology..their Kontra line are premium set of speakers..

and dont forget Sonodyne..they are also in the league of other indian speaker manufacturers..

i am not sure if we can compare speakers..all depends on our ears..vast area for reasearch for sure..lot depends on the components used and every international manufacturers have their own technology for making their speaker sound good..

cheers>>

@Stevieboy

Why do you say that about AV Max? I am a regular reader and except for some of their reviews differing from the reality I always found it to be a good read.
You are right it does give a good general idea of the HI FI world. But isn't that the whole point?

@Others
Indian products do feature in AV Max. But sometimes the sheer number of international brands and their new product launches tends to overwhelm you. I guess Indian companies cant afford to launch new products every now and then.

Now my question is..Is it just enough to have a good product? Doesnt it also need to be marketed well? And that too through magazines like AV and WHF? We cant expect all Indian HT consumers to be knowledgeable like some of you guys here or internet savvy. So I guess one does need to advertise?
:lol:Phew!! I guess that was the MBA in me talking :D

Again no offences meant..

hi captrajesh -

YOU FORGOT ME - and thought of some mickey mouse in pune!!!

and just when (if i solve the problem of sibilance) i am on the verge of .............................. the best two-way in this world???

suyicide is the only option left for me - friend!

regds

we will meet on the heavenly shore!

Hi Chillumdude

The Rethms manufactured in Cochin have been reviewed by Stereophile, 6 moons, Dagogo, Tone Audio and a few more international magazines. Cadence too has been reviewed by a few international magazines

I have stopped buying AV Max since ages. I always thought it was owned by Onkyo :).
What Hi Fi is a copy and paste of it's UK circulation. Most of the reviews they carry doesn't have any presence in indian market and their ratings just amuses me.

I don't feel offended at all. Also, I have been pretty cool considering my tone of the post.

Can you be more specific with what you are alluding to?

ChillumDude-(like your handle by the way-though it must be at least 4 decades since I smoked that kind of peace pipe:licklips:)

As previous posters mentioned there are some Indian based mfrs whose products sell in international markets-like Cadence and Rethm, and their products, by all accounts, are pretty good. Lyrita also makes very good gear, so you may w3ant to benchmark what they make and then draw your conclusions.
